Passive and Active Training
Incorporating both these training concepts in your dogs daily routine can be crucial when it comes to cultivating a well rounded pup 🐶
🐾 ACTIVE Training 🐾
Active training is usually easiest! There’s many ways you can incorporate this in your dogs training routine.. maybe it’s walking your dog is a heel (structured walk) or going to the field by your house and saying the word COME as many times as possible while you let your dog explore all the smells.
The idea is that you’re keeping your dog moving. There’s usually a lot of reps involved with this side of training!
⭐️ Some of the reasons we love this ⭐️
- Helps keep our dogs engaged with us
- Helps build our relationship with our dogs
- Helps strengthen dogs reliability with each command
- Can help tire out your pups brain
🐾 PASSIVE Training 🐾
Passive training is when your dog is practicing the art of doing.. well nothing 😌 Like active training, there are many ways you could implement this concept into your dogs life.
This could be by asking your dog to hold a 40 minute place command while you’re cooking dinner for the family or taking 5 minutes in the middle of your walk to ask your dog to DOWN and simply BE “be”..
⭐️ Some of the reasons we love this ⭐️
- Helps teach dogs how to slow down/relax
- Helps Build Confidence
- Help Build ~Neutrality ~
- Helps Build on Impulse Control
- Helps Ease/Work Through Anxiety
.
.
It can be easy to focus on one training mindset over the other. Especially when you’re just beginning!
It’s okay to start with one and build into the other if needed. It’s normal to find movement easier than stillness.
But try to remember that BOTH of these ideas are helpful when your on this training journey 🐾
Are you using both ideas within your dog’s training routines?
Send us a message or schedule an eval if you want to talk about how you can start incorporating these concepts
The Joys of Off-Leash Reliability 🐕
Having a dog that is off leash reliable is so much fun! But it’s important to know that this freedom is earned.
🐾 **Understanding Off-Leash Training:** 🐾
Having a dog trained off-leash means they have mastered obedience commands such as “come,” “stay,” and “heel” and can reliably respond to these commands even when distractions around and without the leash on. It’s about building a strong foundation of trust, communication, and mutual respect between you and your dog, allowing them the freedom to explore and thrive while staying safe and connected.
⭐️ Some of the reasons we love off-leash ⭐️
- Being able to let your dog explore while at the park/camping/walking/hiking
- Redirection of the dog (chasing an animal, getting too far ahead of you, getting into something they shouldn’t be!!)
- Dog has more freedom
- Encourages stronger bond between owner and dog
Send us a message or schedule an eval if you want to talk about how your dog can also become off-leash reliable!

Shaping the PLACE command with Chief 🐾
Since Cheif is a busy boy, PLACE is a perfect command to introduce in his life to help him and his owners succeed!
Here is a real world example of how I started shaping the place command in the beginning of his program!
Now he is relaxing and holding place with many distractions going on around him without struggling! But, it’s training session like these that got us here 🐾
Please note: this command was taught and formed in a low distraction environment before this video! Adding in more difficult distractions (example: another dog, longer duration expectations, distance) is something that should be built up to!
Using the OUTSIDE of a dog park for reactivity training
The OUTSIDE of a dog park is one of my favorite places to train. Especially for dogs who struggle with reactivity!
Here we are using Murphy and Ofi to show you how we work dogs in this kind of environment to help build their confidence around their triggers and teach them how to regulate their brains while their triggers are around
It’s important to note that all of these skills were taught and patterned in easier settings before we came here!
Ofi finished his 20 day program today and is back home with his mom! She of course she will have to continue/maintain all of the work we put in to keep him successful. But I’m so pleased with how far he came in his program!
Murphy also went home today for his weekend of practice before he comes back on Monday to finish out the rest of his 20 day program
We get a lot of reactive pups through our doors, it’s probably one of the most common behaviors I see!
If you have a dog like Murphy or Ofi that struggles with reactivity, we would love to help you!

Working through fear of the vaccum
Whose dog is afraid of the vacuum? 🙋🏼♀️
Many dogs aren’t a fan of the loud and “scary” machine that is necessary to have around a house.
Most dogs (like paco) run and hide when it comes out, some dogs bark at it and some dogs even try to bite it/attack it!
Teaching a solid duration command like place can be a great way to work out dogs through our fears! You could also use a down/stay as well :)
I use this same idea to work dogs through many different fears/struggles ! Giving our dogs a “job” to work on while scary things are happening around them is a great way to work them through it
Paco came in afraid of almost everything.. so giving him a job to listen to/focus on has been great for his confidence building. This is because he now knows how to successfully show up in each scenario 🐾🫶🏻

Driveway Drills with Logan
After a long weekend home with his family for practice, Logan is back in for the second half of his hybrid 20 day board and train!
Logan is 8 years old and originally came in struggling with some fear aggression, rescource guarding, reactivity and listening issues.
Last week Logan and I spent a lot of time inside learning/proofing all of these skills. He was a very nervous dude so taking things slow for him was important.
Now that he’s ready, I’m starting to take everything outside so we can start forming a relaxing walk and build up Logan’s confidence in more stimulating environments!
Before we even get to the walk, I’m taking time to go backwards a bit and find where he may be struggling
Changing scenery (even if it’s just moving to your driveway) is always challenging for dogs! That’s why it’s so important to practice your skills everywhere. That way you and your dog are set up for the most success.
Check out one of our sessions today and what we worked through ❤️

Great Areas to ask your dog to calm their brain that will build more respect in your relationship with your dogs!
Buck has been back with us for boarding and he’s still as cute as can be!
While his family is away, I’ve been spending a lot of time keeping up with all the skills and manners he learned while he was with us for a 10 day board and train last July ❤️
Here are some areas that I’ve been working with him on for his continued success!
(Don’t worry, there has been lots of cuddles included too 🥰)
What a real world training session could look like
I’ve decided to start a series where I show small snippets of training sessions that I do with my dogs coming in! I’m hoping the small tips on each video will help someone with their dog at home ❤️
.
.
.
To start the series off strong, we have a session from yesterday with Millie!
Millie is in with us for basic training foundations. One of her biggest struggles is controlling her mindset and knowing how to listen/stay calm when she gets excited/anxious in any way (sooo common!)
Here we have Millie in a new setting (my upstairs). You can see in the beginning of the video she wants to be crazy, and how I work her through it to get a calm mind at the end
If you have a dog that struggles with listening when they’re excited, this is exactly how I would starting working them through it. Build to the “harder” things once you and your dog are feeling more confident!
Tips
- all of these skills need to be taught and practiced in a low distraction environment before moving to a harder environment
- LEASH ON
- start with movement (engaging with you) and build into durations (stays)
- stay next to them
As we continue, she will need a lot less guidance from me and I’ll be able to do more things. Until then, I’ll be there every step of the way to guide her when she needs it
Real Life Training Session Example
Leo was back in for a couple days last week to continue to work through his confidence building, listening skills and slowing down his mindset!
While he was with me, it was important that I got creative with his training to really push him and see where he still needs work.
Since we had to finish cleaning up some leaves and yard work, I figured why not take out one of the dogs and use his skills to push him with his listening skills with all the distractions.
You never know what might test your dog, so it’s always worth it to throw them into your real life like this! Training doesn’t always need to be so planned and boring. The more you include it in your real life, the better off your dog and your relationship will be ❤️
Even our 1-year-old can’t get enough of the ‘out’ command! In our household, ‘out’ is a game-changer. It’s the secret to keeping peace amidst the sea of toys. Our dog knows that when we say ‘out,’ it’s time to let go and step away. Here’s why you need the ‘out’ command: ⭐️ ‘Out’ means our dog drops our son’s toys he’s not supposed to have. ⭐️ ‘Out’ tells our dog to back off and give our son some space. ⭐️ ‘Out’ lets our son and dog keep the fetch game going strong. Is the ‘out’ command a must in your home too?
Is your dog constantly busy? Can they not sit still especially when they have a leash on? Do they struggle with reactivity and demanding behaviors? Are they constantly looking for things to chew and get into? If so, this exercise could be great for you to start doing with your dog!
Tether decompression is a very helpful and simple exercise that you can start doing today.
What tethered decompression is..
It’s the idea of tethering your dog somewhere with a leash for periods of time to teach them how to relax.
In the beginning, this will absolutely cause some frustration, but there is meaning behind why to do it!
Why:
Most dogs have no idea how to self soothe and teach themselves coping mechanisms for working through frustration, busy mindsets and impulsive behaviors. When dogs struggle with knowing how to work through these things, you’ll get a whole list of behaviors which we DON’T want.
Through the process of this exercise, your dog will get better and better at learning how to relax and work through the feelings of frustration and teach themselves self soothing mechanisms that they will be able to use the rest of their lives when they feel similar feelings. Which at the end of the day, we all want! A dog that is able to regulate their emotions and work through them is definitely a plus.
Tips:
- Have a durable leash, if your dog is known for chewing
- Completely ignore them during this exercise no matter how hard it is. Do you want them to figure out on their own what the correct behavior
- The idea is to do this daily! 30 minutes minimum but the longer the better. If you can’t do it daily, at least do it every other day.
- feel free to start withholding the leash, but I find it best to tie the dog somewhere close to you. And then other sessions, try having the dog be father away from you.
(This is great to practice when you may be cleaning or getting ready for your day 🙂)
This exercise can be done with dogs of any age! Of course, the s
If you’re feeling stuck with your dog, just know that the relationship you dream of IS POSSIBLE.
It’s really easy to fall into the comparison game. You may see other dogs that don’t behave like yours out on walks and wonder why you can’t get there as well.
It’s extremely common to wonder if your dog is capable of being well mannered and behaving.
It’s really common to feel trapped with your dog’s behaviors.
No matter the size of your dog.. pushy behaviors like reactivity, leash pulling, jumping and overall not listening can feel extremely overwhelming
I get it. I used to be in the same boat with my dog before I found the correct training philosophy and help.
It’s okay to not know the next steps you need to getting the relationship you want with your dog. Just never give up!
because that relationship that you desire.. IS POSSIBLE. Sometimes all you need is a little help.
If you’re struggling with your dog and need help with some tips for next steps, comment or shoot us a message with the word POSSIBLE and we will reach out to help 🐾
