With all the excitement of the solar eclipse Monday, we thought it you'd like to know how, and if, the eclipse will effect your pets. We reached out to Dr Kelly Cairns, VP of Medical Excellence and Education for Thrive Pet Healthcare and Secretary of the CVMA Board of Directors for a short and informative Q&A.

Is it likely that pets will take notice of the eclipse at all?

Pets typically avoid looking directly at the sun on regular days, and they're not expected to do so during an eclipse either. Dogs and cats tend to avoid the bright light emitted by the sun. The discomfort caused by the brightness, leading them to squint, is usually enough to override any curiosity they may have to look directly into the sun.

How likely is it that pets will look up at the eclipse? Do they need eye protection if they do?

While humans are encouraged to wear special glasses to protect against the sun's harmful rays, pets can likely go about their day as usual without the need for any protective eyewear. This is because they typically don't spend extended periods looking up at the sun.

Will the eclipse impact pet behavior?

Pets are generally quite attuned to their surroundings. Pet owners may notice changes in their furry companions’ behavior due to various environmental factors such as rain, wind speed, sunlight, or the length of the day. For instance, some pets prone to anxiety before thunderstorms might mistake the diminished sunlight during an eclipse for the onset of a storm. In such cases, it's essential to stay calm and provide your pet with extra attention. Soothing music, the TV, or white noise can be helpful.

Should pets be kept indoors during the eclipse? Should they be brought along on outside excursions to view it?

It might be wise to keep your pets indoors during the peak times of the solar eclipse in your geographic area, much like you would during a weather-related event or fireworks. This precaution not only prevents the unlikely possibility of a pet staring directly into the sun but also helps weather-sensitive pets cope with any psychological effects from the solar eclipse that may induce stress or panic.

What if my pet has a pre-existing eye condition, should I be more concerned?

If your pet has pre-existing health conditions and you're concerned, please contact your veterinarian - they will be happy to help.
