So we had a calf this morning and it was “dummy calf” wouldn’t get up, was real dazed, no sucking reflex, etc. So we tried the Madigan Squeeze on her, wrapping a rope around her and applying pressure for 20 minutes which causes them to go back to sleep, after the 20 minutes we removed the rope and she woke up, reset from the squeeze, got up and drank a bottle and is doing good. If you’ve never tried it, go research it, it works!! Pulse PEMF

One of these isn’t like the rest…..👀

Our hen isn’t laying regular eggs, she’s laying dinosaur eggs!! They are so big we can’t even fit in cartons now!! 🤦🏼‍♀️😂

Let us know, if you’d like to purchase some eggs! We are now selling them at $3/dz. Pasture-raised, hand-fed, hand-gathered, and straight off the ranch. All proceeds go towards our rescues.

Just a little Timelapse of our training session today.

Today was the first time this little gal has ever been saddled and she handled it like a champ! Absolutely no buck and just easy as can be! Love, love, LOVE working with horses like this! Moments like these are my favorite. ❤️ 🥹

Not gonna lie…..this coming 2 y/o has grown on me ALOT! If I had the time I’d keep her but, we have a few OTTB’s coming in that will require LOTS of rehab and medical attention…so I need to find this girl a home!

If you are looking for a project horse, roping, or barrel prospect…this coming 2 year old mare would be a great place to start. She’s a fast learner, quick on her feet, very responsive to verbal cues and body language, agile, and athletic.

Halter broke and started in the round pen.

Update 10/10/23 - She has been started under saddle with no buck, hop, skip, etc. I have not sat on her back yet, but so far, she has been an incredible horse to train.

🐴 Meet Shirley: A Tale of Resilience 🌟

At Worthington Ranch & Rescue, Shirley, a Thoroughbred mare, found hope and healing.

🌱 Rescued & Reborn 🌿

Shirley was rescued from neglect and malnutrition in May 2023 at a local auction. It was there, we outbid the kill pen buyer at the last second. With love, care, and teamwork, she has made an incredible comeback.

📖 History📖

We discovered she has a remarkable history, and was a broodmare to some incredible foals….and has the pedigree to back it up!

With nothing but a coggins to go on, we miraculously tracked down a few of her former owners and learned her history. Much to their dismay, she should’ve never ended up at an auction nor in this condition. She was treated as royalty at all their barns.

🌅 Triumph of Spirit 🌄

Unfortunately, Shirley’s situation is the sad reality for many horses, and even the best can end up in terrible situations. It only takes one bad circumstance or negligent owner for a horse to end up like this…..And it takes another to recognize their true worth.

Through months of hard work and dedication, Shirley's strength and trust were restored. She is still undergoing PT and chiropractic but now races the other horses in the pasture. Her story reminds us to never give up.

🐴❤️ 10 Reasons to Buy a Rescue Horse🐴❤️

Just are a few reasons why you should get a rescue horse.…in case you didn’t have enough. 🙃

1. **Unconditional Love:** Horses are known for their loyalty and affection. But a rescue horse is built different. They make sure to humble you before loving you. And only then will they be your loving companion for the rest of their days.

2. **Second Chances:** By rescuing, you provide a horse with a second chance at a happy and healthy life….and everyone deserves that.

3. **Healing Power:** Spending time with horses has therapeutic benefits, reducing stress and promoting mental well-being. Horses are our mirrors and they reflect our energy. They teach us more about ourselves every day.

4. **Educational Value:** Rescuing a horse can be a valuable learning experience for you and your family. You'll learn about patience, responsibility, nutrition, psychology, biology and more. But most of all, you’ll learn the importance of body language and communication, which is a fading skill.

5. **Supporting a Cause:** Rescue horses often come from horrendous situations. Starved. Beaten. Abused. Etc. By adopting, you support the rescue organizations working tirelessly to save these animals….and you’ll discover why they do what they do.

6. **Companionship:** Horses are incredibly social creatures. Rescuing one means providing companionship not just for you, but for your family, your other horses, dogs, cats, chickens, etc. Their companionship will teach you the fundamentals of what it means to be a team in this “all about me” kind of world.

7. **Teaching Empathy:** Rescuing teaches empathy, showing that even the smallest actions can make a big difference….and without empathy, you have no connection to the world around you. These horses teach you the meaning of that word.

8. **Form a connection** The bond between horse and rider is sacred. It's a connection that words can't fully describe. It’s a gift to both horse and rider that is unique to each.

9. **Encourage Others:** Your act of kindness sets an example for others and each transformation gives hope to those who swore all was gone.

10. **Gratefulness:** The gratitude in a rescued horse's eyes is a priceless reward that lights a fire in the heart. And when you win THEIR heart, they’ll do just about anything for you. And you’ll learn, that you’ll do the same. 🥹

A little late night therapy on Shirley’s hoof…. been a tough area to treat (and keep clean) because this girl rips off a bandage faster than you can blink.

Good news is that she is FINALLY starting to fill out more on her topline. Can’t wait to see what this big thoroughbred has to offer!

She’s learning the ropes!

I was able to get a halter on Lil Bit yesterday. This yearling mare is coming along nicely. Very curious and now coming up to me for kisses, treats, and the occasional pat. 🥰

FYI - her stall does NOT normally look like this. I left the water on and and flooded her stall by accident 🙃Lucky for us it the 107 degree weather dried it back up rather quickly.

‼️STILL AVAILABLE‼️

⭐️Lil Bit ⭐️
1.5 years old, dun grade project mare. 12.3hh. Mostly unhandled but has been lightly handled this week. Clean bill of health. UTD on coggins, dewormer, etc. Would make someone a great project horse!

This little mare is small in stature but very quick and curious. She is unsure of herself and sensitive to changes in her surroundings, so she will need an experienced cowboy/cowgirl to teach her the ropes. Would be perfect for roping, goat tying, and/or ranch work. Will be a SMALL horse when fully grown.

When we rescued her it was as if she had never seen a human. She was skin and bones and wouldn’t stay in stall if a human was present…would literally try to jump out and run the opposite way of us in the pasture to the point that it was dangerous. Not wanting to push her, we decided to let her out on pasture for several months and allow her to come to us as she gained weight and confidence. Since then, she has improved and is starting training.

While she has a long way to go, she will now come up to the house and greet us. She likes to sniff people but is very weary of new hands. You can now be in her stall while she eats and clean her stall with her in it. We will likely have her halter broke very soon.

7️⃣🥕🥕 unhandled. Please be aware that this will increase as we invest more time and resources into training her.

Located: Caddo, Oklahoma. Also willing to meet in Celina, Texas.

“Horses will always find a way to hurt themselves”….

Shirley, our 17 hand thoroughbred mare, got a little too excited during supper time today. She somehow managed to step on herself while rushing to her feed bucket.…..God bless these horses. 🤦🏼‍♀️

I’m happy to report she is fine. She is all bandaged up and acted like nothing happened. 🐴😅

🚨 ATTENTION🚨We are at MAX capacity! We need to rehome some of our rescues ASAP!!

Unfortunately, 3 of our rescues needed some serious medical attention last week. In the span of 2 days, we had a possible fracture, colic, and tendon injury. All of which require daily care, in addition to the 2-3 rescue horses I “doctor” and/or rehabilitate daily. Although, I work fully remote, my husband travels for work…and 5 horses to “doctor” before my 7:00 AM meetings (+ 7 more to feed) is ALOT for one person!!

For us the animals come first… we don’t eat until our animals do. However, we are now short on stalls, resources, time, and have some vet bills to pay. With that said, we need to rehome the rescues that ARE ready for their NEW/PERMANENT home.

Available horses are sound, UTD on coggins, de-wormer, at healthy weighty, and their feet are all in good condition.

Available rescue horses are pinned to the top of our page.

Just call us the Pony Express -beep
🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴

One of our miniature rescues, Coco, got kicked by one of the big horses on Thursday and was struggling to walk. He needed x-rays but our vet on call didn’t have a portable x-ray machine, so we had to haul him.

The only problem? Coco is so small that he walks under the horse trailer’s stall dividers…meaning there was no way to stabilize him for the trip to the vet! (He’s about 32-33inches tall) Not wanting to risk it, I had to get creative….and creative it was….but he loved it!

I am also VERY happy to report that there were no fractures, but he does have some torn tendons and ligaments that I will be doctoring for the next several weeks.

Fun fact - Coco m really likes the truck now and made sure to let us know. He was VERY particular about what we listened to on the radio and was adamant that the AC blow directly on him.🐴🤣🤣

GREAT run!!!

07/20/2023

COOL SCIENCE (pun intended)!

An old myth wants us to believe that horses should be walked until they cool completely after exercise, even in the summer. However, a study from 2020 looked at five different ways to cool a horse after exercise: walking, walking with fans, walking with intermittent cold water application, walking with intermittent cold water application and scraping, and stationary with continuous tap water application. As it turns out, the method that resulted in the quickest return to normal body temperature was stationary with continuous tap water application (2 minutes), while walking alone took the longest time for recovery (25 minutes).

Bottom line: enjoy your rides in the sun this summer but remain vigilant for signs of heat stress in your horse. If they look tired, it’s time for a drink, a cool bath, and a break in the shade.
