I donโt have to put my dogs in their crates โฆ because they do it on their own! My older dogs now walk right into their crate by me saying โ Go to bedโ . Itโs amazing! The reason being is because I played these crate games on repeat daily , I even fed them in their crates.
You can use treats like cheerios or kibble, or even be creative and throw in a new toy inside the crate.
The more positive associations with the crate the better. The time inside with the crate door closed should increase a bit each time you practice, but do not open it if they are whining or pawing at the door, only open the crate id they are quiet, because if you let them out when they cry or barkโฆ. You just trained them to do it so they can be let out of the crate , itโs reinforcing bad behavior.
I do this for about 10 min a day. Their attention span is very short when they are young so short training sessions throughout the day is much better than a long one.
Have you done crate games yet?

๐ถSniffing is good and how they learn about the world , except if itโs poop ๐ฉ!
๐ถWalk in zig zags and change your route so itโs unpredictable when you go on walks and they have to be more focused.
๐ถBring treats and work on training during walk- โmagnet handโ and โsitโ โleave itโ โletโs goโ are the commands I use often
๐ถIf they pull on leash stop in your tracks and wait for them to come back to you or walk in the opposite direction.

Your time is precious and so is your dogsโ. Get a high velocity blow dryer to cut down on time but also to help see any mats or tangles they may have. The power of these gets blow drying done in no time!

Patience is key! Introducing a harness and leash too soon can overwhelm your puppy, leading to frustration. They are already out of sorts since they just left their mama and the litter, and itโs a brand new environment . You really donโt want to be doing things too soon. Gradual exposure helps them feel comfortable and builds positive associations.
I sometimes let the Leash drag around the house when Iโm training and working on leash work. Other than that, I use baby gates to block areas off of my house since no puppy should have free roam of the house. You can get a long line that is 15ft so at least they feel โfreeโ , but holding them constantly on a 4-6ft leash is not ideal and will lead to frustration and pent up energy and acting out behaviors.
The constant harness and leash being put on them when you first get them is going to be way too overwhelming and they will begin to associate it with a negative if not done carefully and methodically.
If you take them outside to potty, either lure them with a treat into an outside exercise pen or you can clip them on a 15 ft long line, or you can pick them up only after giving them the cue word โUp up upโ to prepare them to be picked up.
Bonding and positive associations are first and foremost!

And donโt forget the treat in your hand ready to go.
Try to lure them as much as you can with treats to where you need them to go instead of always picking them up to avoid them getting frustrated and reactivity when they get picked up.
If you have kids this is extremely important. Itโs very easy for puppies to feel violated and if they are constantly getting picked up it can turn into a negative with growling and nipping. So please tell guest and children to pet them on the floor to keep all interaction positive ๐๐ถ

Remember, puppy training is a journey, not a race! Overdoing it can lead to stress for both you and your pup, turning joy into frustration. Embrace the moments of bonding and play, training will follow naturally when you enjoy the process together! If you put too much focus on something, it will drive you crazy and you will feel like you failed the puppy when in reality you are an amazing puppy parent for trying so hard but thatโs just itโฆ. Donโt try so hard and you and your puppy will be so much happier.
Enjoy just being present and donโt get caught up in doing everything right. Each puppy is different and unique and at the end of the day , what matters most to them is just being with you in your company.๐พ๐

๐พโจ Attention, Puppy Parents!โจ๐พ
When you welcome your adorable 8-10 week old puppy into your home, remember they are ๐๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ญ๐ฒ ๐๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ญ๐ฒ! They are fragile and can easily break bones and strain their growth plates! ๐ถโค๏ธ Their little bones are still developing, and their joints are made up of soft muscle, tendons, and ligaments, not yet fully formed!
As they waddle around with those big floppy paws, itโs essential to restrict their exercise. While itโs tempting to let them bounce around, excessive running or jumping can lead to long-term joint damage.

Keep playtime safe and controlled! The rule of thumb is 5 min of active play for each month they are old. For example a 2 month pup should get 2 active play sessions that last about 5 min. The rest of the time you can work on bonding, training, petting, brushing, they do not need to be exercised and actively played with. Mental activity is just as important and gets them just as tired.
Dog kibble can go rancid ๐ฆ due to exposure to air, moisture, and heat. When the fats in the kibble are oxidized typically from being stored in a non-airtight container or in a warm environmentthey can develop a stale or off smell and taste, and make the kibble grow bacteria that is harmful and cancer causing to your pup. In addition , bugs and rodents are more likely to get inside. Keeping the kibble in its original, sealed bag helps protect it from these elements, maintaining its quality and safety for your dog. Even though the bins are cuteโฆ. Make sure to put the original bag inside it vs dumping it into the bin.

Hand feeding your puppy is beneficial for several reasons:
1. Builds Trust- helps establish a bond between you and your puppy, creating a sense of security and trust.
2. Encourages Calmness- Hand feeding can promote a calm demeanor during mealtime, reducing anxiety and excitement.
3. Teaches Gentle Behavior- It reinforces the importance of gentle interactions, helping your puppy learn to take food softly from your hand ( especially if you have a ๐ฆ shark puppy that loves to nip)
4. Enhances Training - This practice can be integrated into training sessions, making it easier to reward and reinforce good behavior.
5. Promotes Socialization- Hand feeding can help your puppy become more comfortable with human interaction, which improves overall socialization.
6. Encourages Positive Associations- It creates positive associations with your presence, making your puppy more receptive to your guidance and commands.
Overall, hand feeding is a simple yet effective way to nurture a loving and trusting relationship with your pup. So next time itโs time for a feeding session, swap out the bowls for your hand ๐ค and watch your bond grow.
