𝐒H𝐄'𝐒 𝐈N G𝐎O𝐃 𝐂O𝐍D𝐈T𝐈O𝐍......

Feeding the broodmare should not be difficult. In fact, basic and straightforward is usually the best way to feed every horse, including gestating mares. One of the easiest strategies is to aim to feed in a way that maintains a healthy body condition and make adjustments as needed to keep her in good weight.

Body condition scoring (BCS) is widely accepted as an important health monitoring system for any horse and is a useful tool to help gauge weight and condition of breeding horses — before, during and after breeding season. For the broodmare, it can make it easier to assess and keep track of body condition changes throughout the breeding season and help determine when feeding adjustments are necessary.

The commonly used Henneke BCS system is based on a 1 to 9 scale, with 1 being emaciated and 9 being obese. Most experts recommend maintaining broodmares in a body condition between 5 and 6 (moderate to fleshy), staying toward the higher end when entering breeding season and — more importantly — into late gestation. This ensures mares have body stores available to support rapid fetal development, foaling and lactation.

Body condition can affect reproductive efficiency. A body condition score of 5 or above is recommended for optimal reproductive efficiency — mare's may cycle earlier, take fewer breeding's to conceive and have a higher conception rate than lower body condition mares. Malnourished or very thin mares can be more likely to abort an early embryo. Nutritionally deprived broodmares can be susceptible to having pregnancy challenges.

Conversely, obesity can also negatively influence fetal development by impacting placental function and affecting nutrient transfer to the foal in utero. Compared to thin mares or mares kept at an ideal body condition. Obese broodmares can be predisposed to health issues just as much as a mare that is too thin.

Keeping the broodmare in good weight before, during and after gestation is ideal and will make sure mare and foal are set up for continued health.

Did you know your top-performing mare can produce multiple foals in a single season, even while she continues to compete? Or maybe your mare is a valued ranch mare that you need to continue to ride for your lifestyle. Embryo transfer is a great option.🌟

Here’s how equine embryo flushing works:

1️⃣ **Ovulation Monitoring**: We track the donor mare’s cycle to find the perfect time for insemination. 📅

2️⃣ **Insemination**: The donor mare is inseminated with selected stallion semen. 💌

3️⃣ **Embryo Collection**: About 7-8 days post-ovulation, a gentle flushing solution is used to retrieve the embryo. 🧼

4️⃣ **Embryo Transfer**: The embryo is then placed in a recipient mare, who carries the foal to term. 🤰

5️⃣ **Pregnancy Check**: About a week later, we check for a successful pregnancy! 🩺

Embryo flushing allows your mare to share her exceptional genetics without taking time off from her career! ✨

𝐘𝐞𝐬, 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭! Stallion collection is a crucial step in artificial insemination (AI) and embryo transfer for horses.

This process is often carried out by veterinarians or trained personnel in a controlled environment, ensuring the well-being of the animal while obtaining high-quality semen for breeding.

The process of collecting semen from a stallion allows breeders to inseminate multiple mares without needing to physically transport the stallion to each mare. This can be especially helpful in cases where the stallion is in high demand, located far from the mares, or when managing valuable or rare bloodlines.

Having a skilled and well-trained team is critical for ensuring both the well-being of the stallions and the high-quality semen necessary for successful artificial insemination (AI) and shipping. A professional team not only enhances the efficiency of the collection process but also plays a major role in maintaining the overall health of the stallions, ensuring the best possible outcomes for breeding.

𝗟𝗘𝗧'𝗦 𝗧𝗔𝗟𝗞 𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗜F𝗜𝗖𝗜𝗔𝗟 𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗘𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡......

Artificial insemination (AI) in mares has many benefits, including:

𝗦𝗮f𝗲𝘁𝘆: AI reduces the risk of injury and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). It also protects mares from the stress of travel and changing environments.
𝗘ff𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆:AI allows stallions to impregnate more mares without the physical strain of natural breeding.
𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹: AI helps control venereal diseases.
𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀:: AI allows breeders to control the genetics of the offspring.
𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁:AI can help manage mares with reproductive difficulties.
𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴: AI can be used when transportation is limited or when horses are unable to reproduce naturally.
𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀:: AI can increase conception rates.
𝗨𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵:AI reduces the incidence of endometritis, or inflammation of the uterus.

This technique really is the most utilized form of breeding!

𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐄𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐬

𝑶𝒗𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑪𝒚𝒄𝒍𝒆: The reproductive cycle of a mare is controlled by hormonal changes and is regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, similar to other mammals. The cycle is divided into several stages:

𝑬𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒔 ( 𝑰𝒏 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒕):This is the period when the mare is “in heat” and receptive to a stallion. Estrus typically lasts 5-7 days and is characterized by specific behavioral signs such as increased receptivity to the stallion, urination, and tail raising. During this phase, the mare’s ovaries produce a dominant follicle that is preparing to ovulate. Estrogen levels are high during estrus.

𝑫𝒊𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒔 (𝑶𝒖𝒕 𝒐f 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒕):This phase lasts about 14-15 days and follows estrus. It is a period when the mare is not receptive to the stallion. After ovulation, the follicle that was producing estrogen turns into a structure called the corpus luteum, which secretes progesterone to prepare the uterus for a potential pregnancy. If the mare is not pregnant, the corpus luteum will regress and the cycle will restart.

𝑨𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒔:This is a period of reproductive inactivity, typically seen during the winter months in mares living in temperate climates. It lasts for several months and is marked by the absence of estrus behavior. During anestrus, there is low secretion of hormones like estrogen and progesterone.

𝑶𝒗𝒖𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏:Ovulation occurs towards the end of estrus. The mature follicle ruptures and releases an egg (oocyte) into the oviduct, where fertilization can occur if s***m is present. The timing of ovulation is influenced by factors such as light exposure and overall health of the mare.

𝑯𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒔 𝑰𝒏𝒗𝒐𝒍𝒗𝒆𝒅
The main hormones involved in equine reproductive physiology are:
𝑮𝒏𝑹𝑯 (𝑮𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒅𝒐𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒑𝒊𝒏-𝑹𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑯𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒐𝒏𝒆): Released from the hypothalamus, GnRH stimulates the release of two key hormones from the pituitary gland: FSH and LH.
F𝑺𝑯 (F𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒄𝒍𝒆-𝑺𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒖𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑯𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒐𝒏𝒆): Stimulates the growth and maturation of ovarian follicles.
𝑳𝑯 (𝑳𝒖𝒕𝒆𝒊𝒏𝒊z𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑯𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒐𝒏𝒆):Triggers ovulation and the formation of the corpus luteum.
𝑬𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒈𝒆𝒏: Produced by the growing follicles, estrogen is responsible for the signs of estrus (heat) and preparing the reproductive tract for potential fertilization.
𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒈𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒐𝒏𝒆: Produced by the corpus luteum after ovulation, progesterone maintains pregnancy by inhibiting further estrus cycles and preparing the uterus for embryo implantation.
