Upper airway function issues in sport horses can be complicated and tricky to diagnose. Unlike young racehorses that run straight and fast, sport horses are asked to perform in a variety of settings, bridles, headsets and āframesā. They are also an older population of horses, so sometimes their issues are chronic and may become clinical as a horse moves up in class or changes jobs.
Most upper airway problems are investigated with endoscopy and normally with the horse standing still. The ability to observe what happens in the upper airway, and particularly the larynx of the horse, when the horse is working, is key to understanding the actual problem.
Dynamic endoscopy allows this. RUNNING āSā EQUINE VETERINARY SERVICES has recently invested a fantastic system to perform observations of the upper airway while the horse is working at the walk, trot, canter and gallop. The system is all-in-one, on the headstall; no backpacks for the rider, or heavy saddlepad based systems. The image is recorded on a cellphone with audio. The picture and sounds are super clear. We have greatly enhanced our ability to diagnose and treat upper airway functional issues and disease in our sport horse patients. Give the office a call if you think your horse is candidate for this technology!

Dr. Staller performing a Standing Laparoscopic Cryptorchidectomy
Watch Drs. Staller and Bowers use Standing Laparoscopy and Electrosurgical instruments to treat a pony with bilateral abdominally-retained testes (cryptorchid). This pony was purchased as a gelding, but when he started showing increasing stallion-like behavior, blood tests indicated that he was a cryptorchid. Laparoscopy was chosen to explore the abdomen, diagnose the condition and removed the testes because it can be done without general anesthesia (standing), utilizes small incisions and the horse can go back to work within days. Stay tuned for more video and photos of Laparoscopy and Arthroscopy.
Special thanks to Les Meadowcroft of VetOvation for technical support and supplies for laparoscopy and minimally-invasive surgery and to Aesculap USA for the amazing Caiman unit. We love it!
