Looking back to the old Colbert days, when the dust hung in the air and the benches were crowded with men who knew the worth of a good entry, we remember the time when Slim Silver Bullet made his mark with a flawless 8:0, carrying two winning entries and earning the quiet respect of everyone present. It was a day shared with some of the finest hands of their era E. P. Murley, Red Ketchum, Slim Benoist, Chuck Berry, and Hiawatha Stokes each one a name spoken with regard in those circles. Those were the times when skill and breeding stood on their own, and every entry carried a story worth telling, a memory from a finer, long-gone era.

In the late 1990s, Carol NeSmith of Backwater Farm, Mississippi, carved his name into the history of the sport with a calm ferocity that stunned competitors across continents. From the pit houses of the American South to the roaring crowds of the World Slasher Derby in the Philippines, NeSmith stood unshaken an architect of champions and a tactician of rare instinct.

By 1995, he had already claimed a World Slasher Derby championship, proving his birds could dominate on the sport’s grandest stage. The following year, he seized the coveted title of 1996 Cocker of the Year Knife & Gaff at Sunset Recreation Club in Louisiana, solidifying his reputation as a master breeder and handler.

But it was 1997 and 1998 that etched his legacy in stone. In back-to-back displays of precision, will, and unmatched gamefowl, Carol NeSmith rose above the fiercest international competition to become a two-time solo champion of the World Slasher Derby an achievement spoken of with reverence ever since.

Even now, when old hands tell stories of greatness, they speak of him in a lowered voice:
Carol NeSmith Mississippi’s quiet thunder who dominated the world, one derby at a time.

THE BLUE BERG MUFFS THE LINE THAT SHOULDN’T HAVE SURVIVED

1914 A Hoy M**f c**k drops a man, walks off like nothing happened. Dave Berg is ready to kill him until a young fellow begs to breed him over some Blues nobody respected.

Months later, that boy shows up with 19 huge, steel-blue muffed stags rough, wild, and tearing each other apart.

Berg wants them gone.
John Hoy walks in, looks them over, and changes everything:

“They’re good. Don’t get rid of them.”

He was right.
They became deadly, dominant, almost unbeatable later crossed with Dr. Hallock’s Whitehackles to create the legendary Blue Berg M**fs.

A line born by accident.
A legacy built by performance.

This 1960s photograph recalls an era long past, when ‘Mongoose’ stood as a notable representative of the old Butcher line. The image was taken at a short heel derby in Frostburg, Maryland, where a young Ohio handler, Jim Pierce, managed the c**k on behalf of Mr. Red Richardson. At four years of age, Mongoose had already earned two victories, and on this day secured his third and final win with a 9–1 finish. Contemporary accounts noted that Pierce refused a $500 offer for the bird a considerable sum for the period. In later years, when breeder Billy Ruble inquired after the rooster, Pierce passed him on. The moment endures as a small but meaningful footnote in the lineage history of that era.
