Just like us, pets can have allergic reactions to food, insect bites, medications, or environmental allergens. Some reactions can be mild, while others may be life-threatening. Quick action is key!

Signs of an Allergic Reaction:
⚠️ Itchy skin, redness, or hives
⚠️ Swelling of the face, eyes, or ears
⚠️ Excessive licking or scratching

🚨 Urinary Obstruction in Cats: A Medical Emergency 🚨

Urinary obstruction is a serious medical condition where there is a blockage in the urinary tract, preventing normal urination. It’s most common in male cats but can affect dogs and females as well. It’s a medical emergency, as it can lead to kidney damage, bladder rupture, or death if not treated promptly.

Causes:
-Urinary Stones (bladder or urethra)
-Urethral Plug (a mixture of mucus, cells, and crystals)
-Tumors or growths
-Infections causing inflammation
-Trauma to the urinary tract

Symptoms:
-Straining to urinate or inability to urinate
-Crying or vocalizing in pain
-Licking the ge***al area excessively
-Vomiting, lethargy, or loss of appetite
-Abdominal distension or discomfort

Diagnostics:
-Physical examination
-Urinalysis to check for blood, infection, or crystals
-Ultrasound or X-rays to look for stones, plugs, or other blockages
-Blood tests to check kidney function

Treatment:
-Catheterization to relieve the obstruction and empty the bladder
-Surgical removal of stones or other blockages if necessary
-Medications to treat infections or inflammation
-Dietary changes to prevent reoccurrence of urinary crystals or stones

Hospitalization for monitoring kidney function, hydration, and ongoing care (IV fluids may be necessary to support kidney function and alleviate dehydration)

In severe cases, ongoing care and monitoring for complications like kidney damage or bladder rupture

If you suspect your pet has a urinary obstruction, it’s important to seek veterinary care immediately! Early treatment, including possible hospitalization, can prevent further complications and improve recovery chances.

🐾 Protect Your Pet: Flea, Tick, & Heartworm Prevention 🐾

Fleas, ticks, and heartworms can cause serious health issues for your furry friends, but the good news is that prevention is easy! 🌟 Regular use of flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives helps keep your pet safe from parasites that can lead to discomfort, disease, or even life-threatening conditions.

Here’s what you need to know:

Fleas
-Diseases: Flea allergy dermatitis, anemia, and tapeworms.
-Symptoms: Itching, scratching, hair loss, red or inflamed skin, and visible fleas.
-Diagnostics: Flea combing, visual inspection for fleas or flea dirt, and skin scrapings for secondary infections.
-Treatment: Topical or oral flea treatments, flea shampoos, and environmental cleaning.

Ticks
-Diseases: Lyme disease, Ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and anaplasmosis.
-Symptoms: Lethargy, fever, joint pain, loss of appetite, or lameness.
-Diagnostics: Blood tests, physical exam, and tick removal for laboratory a**lysis.
-Treatment: Antibiotics for tick-borne diseases and tick prevention methods.

Heartworms
-Diseases: Heartworm disease (can lead to heart failure, lung disease, or organ damage).
-Symptoms: Coughing, fatigue, weight loss, difficulty breathing, and swollen abdomen.
-Diagnostics: Blood tests (antigen and microfilaria tests), x-rays, and ultrasounds.
-Treatment: A series of injections to kill adult heartworms and strict exercise restriction for recovery.

Intestinal Worms (Roundworms, Hookworms, Whipworms, and Tapeworms)
-Diseases: Digestive issues, weight loss, anemia, and potential organ damage.
-Symptoms: Vomiting, diarrhea, bloated abdomen, visible worms in stool, and scooting.
-Diagnostics: F***l flotation test to detect worm eggs, blood tests, and sometimes imaging.
-Treatment: Deworming medications (oral or injectable) and follow-up f***l testing to ensure eradication.

On behalf of PetMedic Urgent Care Vet Clinic - Warwick we are excited to congratulate Jen Morris, CVT on receiving the 2024 Rhode Island Veterinary Technician's Association's Veterinary Technician of the Year award!!

"The Rhode Island Veterinary Technician Association is proud to announce the 2024 Veterinary Technician of the Year is our very own Jen Morris, CVT! Jen received more than twice the number of nominations any Tech of the Year candidate has ever received. Jen's lifelong love for animals began in her family’s veterinary practice, Morris Mobile Animal Clinic in Fall River, MA, where she worked alongside her father, Dr. Kenneth Morris, DVM.

After graduating from Durfee High School as a National Honor Society member and one of the top 10 students in her class, Jen experienced the sudden loss of her father. This tragedy fueled her commitment to raising awareness about the mental health crisis affecting the veterinary community. To deepen her understanding, she earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Bridgewater State College.

Initially, Jen worked as a social worker, but she soon realized she was most fulfilled when working directly with animals. She then decided to pursue a career as a veterinary technician, joining a general veterinary practice in Massachusetts while studying Veterinary Technology at NEIT. She became a Certified Veterinary Technician in 2014 after passing the VTNE.

With years of experience in general practice across Massachusetts and Rhode Island, Jen recently transitioned to urgent care and now works at PetMedic Urgent Care in Warwick, RI. She is dedicated to expanding her knowledge in the dynamic field of veterinary medicine. Jen is passionate about the human-animal bond and uses her experience to support pets and the people who love them.
