Adoption Update for Aika! Aika was found as a stray in January in pretty rough shape, recently having had puppies and heartworm positive with some minor injuries. Thanks to a very dedicated long-term foster, the donors who helped her get through her medical needs, and our wonderful placement partner, Buddy Dog, Aika now has a forever home! We received the following update "We can tell Aika was very loved and cared for, she is such a sweety! [My children] are both so happy to have a dog in the house again. Our last dog died 1.5 years ago at age 16 and we’ve missed having a doggy. We live near a river and some trails and she gets lots of walks each day. We head up to more open areas in Maine for getaways and she’ll be heading up there [frequently]. Thank you for your care and treatment of Aika especially with the heartworm, we’re so happy she’s in our lives."

Update 9/28 - Our infinite gratitude goes to the linemen who worked tirelessly to restore power throughout the night. They continue to work in our area to help the remaining people without electricity. Now the cleanup process begins. Our hearts go out to our friends in the mountains and upstate areas as they deal with unimaginable and devastating losses. Many people we know in that area are still unaccounted for. This storm will leave a permanent mark on thousands of people. Remember to be grateful for what you have and for those you love, it can all be gone in the blink of an eye.

9/27 - We are still without power at the rescue, but we have three small generators running the air conditioning to the kennel buildings thanks to a dedicated volunteer (Mike, you are a Godsend!). We were blessed to have limited damages and trees down, though there is a lot of clean up to do. With more than half of our state still without electricity and the upstate severely impacted due to major flooding, please keep those struggling in your thoughts and prayers. Volunteer and contribute wherever you are able to make a difference, and stay safe.

South Carolina’s electric cooperatives were hit extremely hard by this morning’s storm, and the restoration process for wide swaths of our state is going to take days, even weeks, not hours.

Hurricane Helene knocked out the power for about 425,000 South Carolina cooperative consumers this morning, a little less than half of our statewide system. About 380,000 of those consumers were still without power as of about an hour ago.

• This storm snapped at least several hundred poles, yanked down lines and damaged not just distribution systems, but complex transmission lines and other critical infrastructure.
• Almost 50 transmission lines that supply our consumers were out this morning. Those are the big ones that serve as the interstates of our power grid.
• As a result, dozens of substations and delivery points – which function like interstate exits for those major transmission lines – were knocked out of commission.
For some of our co-ops, particularly those in the Upstate and along South Carolina’s western border, our folks on the ground say this was the most destructive storm they have ever seen.
• Some of those folks have worked at their cooperatives for more than 40 years of experience. They worked through the 2014 ice storm. They worked through Hurricane Hugo in 1989. And this is the worst they’ve ever seen.
• A handful of our co-ops saw almost their entire system – up to 98% of their consumers - go offline as the storm wreaked havoc on our infrastructure.

We are still early in the process of assessing all the damage, but we know it’s substantial. It’s very bad.

Our co-ops have crews working across the state to restore power, and we have called in help from co-ops in other states.

• We expect to be working around the clock this weekend and into next week to restore power.
• It’s important to keep in mind that our co-ops serve some of the most rural areas and the most rugged terrain in our state.
• In order to safely restore power, our crews have to inspect every mile of line leading to your homes and businesses before we re-energize them.
• To do that, our line crews have had to cut through downed trees and blocked roadways just to reach the infrastructure that needs repairing or replacing.
• Our materials and equipment suppliers are having to do the same thing to reach our line crews.
• It takes time to do this safely.
o Just this morning, we’ve had trees fall on at least two trucks that were out working to restore power to our system.
o The workers were OK in both cases, but those incidents underscore why restoring power after a storm of this magnitude takes time.
• We are still early in the restoration process.

We are going to work and work and work until the power is back on, and we need your help. Please be patient, and please be understanding with the folks who are out working and doing everything they everything we can to restore power to South Carolina.

Sometimes miracles happen, when a senior staffy mix who was part of our program for 14 months finds her forever family - that's one of them. While the shelter/rescue world is collapsing around us nationwide, we cling to the happy moments that keep us going. Maisey hit the adoption lottery with a fantastic family; we waited three months to post her adoption update, waiting for the other shoe to drop. We can officially say Maisey is loved and she is home. This is why we give the older dogs a chance when we can, this is why we foster, this is what we hope for and dream of. Given enough time, most dogs can find the right home. Congratulations Maisey, may you have the most wonderful life ever filled with adoring dog parents and grandkids that come to visit who love you too.

At SCVC, we’re initiating “Foster Friday” to highlight an adoptable pet of the week and/or to thank a foster family for doing a great job with a dog or cat.
So…we’re going to start our first week of this endeavor with Ebbie!

Ebbie (a lab mix) is a little over 4 years old, is spayed and microchipped, and is 72 pounds of pure love.
She adores people and is a well-behaved girl who loves car rides.
She knows some basic obedience commands, is crate trained and “somewhat” house broken.
She does pull a bit on the leash, but with proper command training that can be resolved quickly as she is very smart.
Ebbie hasn’t been cat tested but has done well with some dogs, and we believe she would mesh well with the right canine family member.
She's a super-sweet gal looking for her forever family home and a couch to call her own.
If interested just contact us, or better yet, Dog4U, Inc.

🌟 Vaccine Clinic
KERSHAW COUNTY - Saturday March 23rd, 2:30pm-4:30pm. 💉

PLEASE, keep your dogs inside your vehicles(and leashed). Cats need to be in carriers. Each vaccine is only $5.00. Please have cash ready (if possible) to help keep the line moving.

Vaccines help teach your pet’s immune system how to recognize and fight off certain disease-causing agents. Vaccines work by stimulating the immune system's production of antibodies that identify and destroy these agents before they can cause diseases like parvo and distemper. This helps prevent or lessen the severity of future disease and helps protect our pets, your pets and OUR Community!

The sweetest Adoption Update for Asher, rescued from our local municipal shelter in SC and adopted through our northern partners at Buddy Dog! After dealing with several major personal losses, this sweet boy has brought his family immeasurable happiness and comfort. "He is the absolute light of our lives...this dog [has been] bringing joy and stability back in our family’s time of grief. He loves sunning in the backyard on my sister's lap. He is a true joy! And a big blessing for our family. My sister brings him walking the kids in the morning and then in the afternoon. He loves it." This is why we do what we do! Thank you to his foster family in South Carolina and our friends at Buddy Dog for making this perfect match a reality!
