Sometimes, when the stars, sun, moon and planets align, someone comes into your life - totally unexpectedly!
Such is the case with a very special young woman named Victoria Cassidy. Victoria comes from north Georgia. But she was working for the Jones Research facility at Ichauway Plantation in Baker County. She came out one Saturday months ago and volunteered to walk the dogs. And walk she did. She walked every dog here at the shelter. If she got here ahead of us, she would feed, and even wash bowls. She bought leashes, shampoos, etc. Her gifts to our pups went above and beyond!
At the beginning of March, she came to us wanting some new fencing for our runner area. We told her we had several other projects in the works and we just couldn't afford it right now. She told us not to worry about it.
Next thing we know, a fence guy arrived and Victoria met with him, told him what we needed , he gave a price and she paid for it right then. Our runner has now been divided into 2 runners allowing us to let more dogs out. We also got a gate installed which will allow us to place a dog into the runner until a kennel becomes available.
We have attached a video of three of the dogs who were the first ones to get let loose today.
In the left runner, is Walker the Walker hound, who doesn't make a lot of noise.
In the right runner is Smiley, the black fuzzy girl who is a love bug and loves to run, jump and play. The leopard Catahoula is Skippy who we picked up last week. He is a true herding dog by nature.
We got the sad news this weekend that our Victoria is leaving us as her internship is over at Jones Research and she will be heading back to north Georgia this weekend. We will definitely miss her, her smile and her sweet personality. We know the pups will be looking for her Saturday morning.

We have located the injured dog. Hopefully we can get her to the vet very soon. We have given her a sleeping pill (prescribed by a licensed vet) to hopefully make the ride to the vet a little easier for her. We know she has to be in serious pain. This injury is old, and her owners moved away, leaving her in this condition.
This fellow was picked up during the holidays on US 19 and the person fostered him. However, the foster is having to leave in 10 days to head back to work. Would anyone be interested adopting this fellow? If so, please contact us and let's get this boy in a home. He didn't have any type of collar on when he was found.

A big fan of Stitches, Mrs. Joni Jacobs Freels, has generously given of her time and money and has made us a set of 5 insulated tumblers. All have different designs, with motifs regarding animals, shelters and rescues. She suggested that we auction each tumbler and that is what we are going to do.
Mrs. Freels ask that we start the bids at $25.00. We will offer a tumbler for 2 weeks, and the person with the winning bid will receive their tumbler. The auction for the tumbler shown will end at noon on Tuesday, October 31st.
This is a small fundraiser but the proceeds will go towards much needed food, cleaning supplies, etc. In the shelter world, every penny helps.

If you have ever been down Jack Pearson Road in Mitchell County, then you know there is NO way for a puppy to survive on this road. But some asswipe meant for these babies to die. Plain and simple. Seven puppies, about 6 to 7 weeks old were dumped on this dirt road with absolutely no thought to their welfare.
A huge thank you to Josh for calling us and staying with the pups until we could arrive. So now, we have 37 puppies in house.
Even after being treated so miserably by humans, they came running to us. Even after their miserable lot in life of being born to a dog whose owner could care less, these babies still were willing to trust humans again.

Guess who just got adopted? Ellie Girl has found her forever home with the McDonald family! We knew Ellie's sweet personality and perfect ears would win over her own family!
Well, we tried to get Ellie, one of our side yard pups, to be still for some closeups, but she wasn't having any part of it. So we have attached a video as well! Ellie is about 6 months old, and we think she is a German Shepherd mix. She has absolutely perfect ears and 4 beautiful white feet. But the best thing about Ellie? She loves to play and gets along with everyone! She loves to be loved on and she really loves play time. Isn't she gorgeous? She would be a perfect addition to any home! Come out to Stitches and visit with this awesome girl! Please care and share her post far and wide! This girl needs a home and some kids to keep her company!
AGAIN! Do not call us asking us to take kittens or cats. We do not have ANY room for ANY more!
We have only so many kennels! All of our kennels are full! We practice litter integrity. That means litters stay together until they are adopted out or become old enough to sterilize and then set free to run the shelter. Most of these kittens came in without mamas and were sick with upper respiratory infections which spread like wildfire to healthy cats in a kennel setting. We try to save as many as possible, but it blows our budget to hell vetting these kittens. One bottle of medicine will treat one kitten for one week and it costs us $50.00. So if you can compute math, try 20+ kittens at $50 each. We can only do so much with the resources we have. But when we say we are full, we are speaking the plain truth.
By all that is Holy, preach "SPAY AND NEUTER" far and wide! Remember, the kittens in your possession today will be able to make babies of their own in about 6 months!
