Business Update:

With our expected arrival coming at the end of June, I’m no longer going to be taking on any new clients for training. Current clients will still have limited boarding available - feel free to reach out to check on dates.

Who knows what the future holds, maybe later on I will reopen, but for now changing priorities to focus on my family.

Thank you to all who have supported this passion, now on to our next adventure! 👣

Free roam down vs place command.

What’s the difference, and why does it matter?

Free roam down is when the dog is allowed to be free roaming the room, and then they eventually pick a spot and lay down. What happens here is the dog is making their own choices…and often times their choice is to lay as close to their owner as possible. Then when the owner moves ever so slightly the dog is instantly awake and jumping up ready to follow their owner to the next room. (Pictures is Aurora under my desk as I’m working, literally as close to me as possible).

Vs

Place command. The place command teaches the dog to relax when I need them to (working, doing chores, little kids on the ground, guests over, dinner time etc) and it’s in a designated spot that they need to stay on until I tell them otherwise. This builds confidence (the dog isn’t up the owners butt all day) & teaches the dog boundaries in the home. The key is to stay consistent with your expectations when on place, meaning no whining/barking/coming off the bed prematurely.

A small tweak to your daily routine of instead of letting your dog do what they want to all day, change to setting a boundary of a place bed…and I guarantee your life will be changed for the better 🐾

Arrows first long line park visit!

As soon as we hit the open I released from heel and started recording.

I love this type of training because it’s rewarding to the dog to get some training and when released from his obedience commands he gets the ultimate reward - FREEDOM.

It also creates awareness between the dog and the handler, where he constantly has to make a choice: do I stay with my person, or do I try to ditch out to do what I want. I can show him that choosing to stay with me = rewards/freedom on the long line. Choosing to ditch or not listen = e collar pressure.

He did great! Lots of great spinning on a dime recall reps, and still a couple where he chose to ignore me, but once felt the e collar pressure returned. Those are the moments we need to stack up before he can be safetly off leash.

When I recommend “no free roaming” & “use your commands” this is what I mean.

I had some kitchen stuff to do, took me 20 minutes.

Arrows options were:
1) stay crated
2) free roam (aka chase the cat)
3) downstay

By using his command of a downstay, he could be involved and hang out with me, without being a bother of getting into something he shouldn’t or pestering the cat.

04/13/2022

Do you want your dog to be able to involved in your life without being in the way, being obnoxious, being dangerous, being unenjoyable?

Place command!

There’s no way these 2 could be out and about with a saw being used safely if they were just running amuck and under our feet. But with the place command they can be out with us enjoying the fresh breeze.

We love this training 🐾

Arrow is working hard learning all his new skills that he will take home to make living & camping with him much more enjoyable!

He is a quick little learner, only on day 2 or his training! Can’t wait to see all that he is able to accomplish here, and beyond with his family!

Putting out training content that is educational and entertaining means I have to record a lot of drills and outings to keep people engaged in watching the content.

However, the true “magic” of the training is right here. Taking a go go go dog and teaching them how to relax. Unfortunately most view this as “boring”.

“Oh there’s Lauren posting the 293947 picture of the day with the dog just laying there on a cot, poor thing!”

^that couldn’t be further from the truth! Right now, Arrow is not a joy to take out and about and that’s just the cold hard truth. He was scheduled to get groomed prior to drop off but Dads scheduled changed and Mom is unable to handle him by herself. And then at drop off we literally had to shout to talk over his barking.

If we want a dog that is calm and respectful to be able to INVOLVE in our daily lives (and not be stressed by him) we have to teach him how to be calm.

So even tho crate naps and place training may not be fancy and entertaining, that’s the true magic sauce.

Also this skill is applicable in the real world. Jada had a vet appt where I was unable to go in due to Covid restrictions and the vet struggled looking in her ears because she was pacing the room. I told her to use the rug as place, she said place and pointed and Jada went and settled down and was able to have a good ear exam. The vets exact words were “wow! That made my job so easy!”

I will never stop praising the place command!

As a dog owner you are faced with 2 options as far as the house rules for your dog.

1) Free roaming - which means the dog is left to its own devices to do whatever it wants whenever it wants

2) Place command - giving your dog a comfy bed to lay on and asking them to chill and relax until released

Depending on your particular dog, either option may be fine. Or….one may be disastrous and the other allow you to live in peace.

Why can free roaming disastrous?

Because if your dog struggles with potty training, chewing/eating inappropriately things such as furniture socks or underwear, barking at the window, getting into fights with the other dogs in the house, resource guarding and so on, then giving your dog free roaming which allows them to be presented with 92948 choices can lead to them making the bad choice.

If we give them one choice - lay down and chew your bone & relax….then you as the owner don’t have to constantly stress about what trouble your dog is getting into this time.

If you’re struggling to enjoy your dog in the house, give the place command a try. It’s a game changer!

Confidence building for your dog!

Sounds like a silly concept. But it actually can have huge impacts in your training.

I start small in a calm environment with something close to the ground, using a leash and giving an “up up” command as I encourage the dog up. If the dog is super nervous, I’ll reward for simply nosing the object, or one paw, or an attempted jump. As they get more brave then the reward comes after you jump and stay.

Once it’s a learned command then I take it on the road! Anytime we are out and about on a walk I’ll give “up up” and encourage jumping up on various things - rocks, logs, playground equipment etc.

It’s also great for bonding and trust building between you and your dog!

Her family did such a good job with staying consult throughout her training and she’s shaping up to be a very good little lady!

Lots of fun exciting adventures ahead for this girl!

Hopefully we will get to see her again at pack walks this summer🐾

Muzzled dogs aren’t bad dogs.

Muzzle training is beneficial for

🐾 vet appts - especially curbside!

🐾 insecure dogs that you want some extra space in public

🐾 nervous dogs

🐾 pushy dogs

🐾 dog reactive/selective dogs that are learning to interact appropriately

🐾 GOOD dogs!

Most of the time what holds us back from muzzling our dogs is “but what will everyone else think!” If it’s the best thing for your dog….do it! So take pride….and muzzle your dogs☺️

I absolutely love when a dog comes back for boarding and their owner has kept up with the training so that the boarding experience is a fun one!
Since Luna is good in the car and respectful on a walk, she gets to be fully involved in all the adventures during her stay!

11/01/2021

This is by far my favorite point in the training!
Using the obedience commands we’ve learned out in the real world, under real distractions. I’m not only working to continue to make our commands (sitstay, downstay, heel & come) stronger and more reliable but also building our relationship, giving her a reward for working hard this week, and building up her confidence. A dog has to have a foundation to make this kind of walk enjoyable…at the end of the clip I came inches away from falling over the long line but I was able to stop what could have been really bad by just recalling her. If she didn’t have a recall, she would have kept running out, and I for sure would have ate dirt😅 training is a cool (and safe!) thing!
Keep on rocking Penny!💪

Small dog appreciation post!

Just because you have a small dog…doesn’t mean they wouldn’t benefit from being trained.

Just because you have a small dog…doesn’t mean they wouldn’t benefit from a daily walk.

Just because you have a small dog…doesn’t mean they wouldn’t benefit from a good flirt pole/tug session.

Small dogs need fulfilled just as much as big dogs.

Small dogs don’t belong as a full time lap dog. They don’t belong in a stroller, or a backpack, or a purse.

They are dogs, regardless of their size. And when allowed to do dog things…their worlds are opened and can experience life at its fullest.

Today’s small dog appreciation post is brought to you by this little ball of fire, Bluey who goes home tomorrow after her 3 week board and train.

Prior to training she didn’t think she could go down stairs, jump in and out of the car, or settle in one spot without spinning in circles over and over.

Now she’s confident and able to take direction and commands without being bribed by a treat and able to relax without anxiously circling. I’m so proud of this little girl and am so thankful to have been a part of her journey 😍

This may be my best idea yet!
Slip lead to the low right side of neck….end of lead tied to the collar on the left side.
Off leash handle!
Easily can break her to be a free dog, then when pass people recall and pick up the reins.
Also…check out those ears. Always tuned in…even if she doesn’t know why I’m asking her to sit then creepily standing behind her😅

Gotta say….pretty proud of this stroke of genius 😉

Is taking a blind dog on vacation challenging?

Yes.

But is it worth it to include him on our little getaway?

Also yes. 💕

I did a lot of things wrong in my early years with this boy. But I also wouldn’t trade him for the world 😘

Congratulations to graduate Simi!

Her owner put in so much effort with her training and she has truly shined!

I’m so proud of where they’ve come, we did her last lesson on a hiking trail and it was truly a pleasant walk with a well behaved doggo and her awesome owner. They even gave me a sweet and thoughtful gift💕

Congratulations kiddo!

Responsible dog ownership.

Owning a dog is a huge privilege that most of us are able to partake in, but it also comes with a lot of responsibilities.

#1) finding the right breed/rescue that fits the lifestyle you plan to have with the dog

#2) making sure you are financially able to own a dog - can you keep up with monthly food bills and have enough to cover an emergency vet bill?

#3) finding the right food - this takes research and not just picking the food that’s cheapest and has the prettiest bag at the grocery store. Dog kibble is unfortunately a huge marketing scheme and we have to do our work to find what’s important, even if that means spending a little extra per bag

#4) providing the dog with daily mental/physical exercise. Yes some days will be slower and some days will be more action packed, but you should still be making sure your dogs needs are met every single day

#5) and of course the one I’m most passionate about - training. Find a training style that matches you (and the dog) the best and stick with it! Training is the difference between a dog that’s taken to a pound and a dog that gets to stay in the home. Training is the difference of a dog that gets to go on daily walks vs the dog that stays at home because they are unbearable to walk. Training is the difference between a dog having to be put away in the crate when company comes over vs the dog that can relax on their place bed without being disruptive.

Responsible dog ownership makes owning a dog truly life changing. If you need any help in any of these areas discussed above, reach out!

Our dogs will only rise up to the expectation that we set for them.

Allow them to break commands? They will continue to break commands.

Don’t ask them for controlled calmness on a regular basis? They won’t be able to be calm when you ask them.

Let them leave heel position to sniff or pull? They will continue to leave heel position to sniff and pull.

BUT!
If you hold them accountable to what you’ve taught them…you can involve them in little every day things without being driven crazy. You can enjoy walking your dog. Best part is…you can ENJOY 👏 YOUR 👏 DOG.

Need help achieving this?

Reach out to a balanced trainer.

Your dog will thank you☺️

I saw this at the zoo yesterday and I thought it’s a great example of what dog training is truly about.
I train because I care.
🐾 I care about their physical health - I want every dog to be able to be walked daily without it being a stress because of a pulling/lunging/barking dog, and have the ability to chase a ball in a wide open field without the fear of them running away or not coming when called.
🐾 I care about their mental health - it breaks my heart to see dogs living in a constant state of anxiety and over arousal when they are completely capable of transforming into a relaxed dog.
🐾 I care about people being able to live a life that they ENJOY with their dogs....not a life they feel burden by because of their dog.
So many people are held back from this life because they think the crate is “mean” or having your dog on the place command instead of roaming the house doing whatever they please “isn’t fair”
But what if we switched the narrative?
And instead we crate our dogs because WE CARE.
We use the place command because WE CARE.
We give our dogs structure and help in navigating this human life because WE CARE.
What would your life look like with your dog if you changed your thoughts around training? And instead of thinking training is restrictive and too hard....and instead hold onto the mind set of ——
We care....therefore we train💪

Luna is starting to learn some things!

The first thing I teach when a dog gets here for a Board and Train is to “follow”. She originally was in her own world, pulling on the leash, darting every which way. I can’t teach any obedience until the dog has awareness that I exist🙃

I use the tone on the E collar to teach her to come close, and then if there’s any veering off I give her low level E collar pressure and use the tone to bring her back. As we go on we will start tightening this up and labeling it as Heel.

By dragging the long line, she’s having to use that MIND to follow my body language instead of relying heavily on leash pressure and only half way paying attention.

She’s also nailing her auto sits when I stop! This is one smart cookie...can’t wait to see all that we accomplish in the next 3 weeks! 🐾
