It is with a heavy heart, that we announce the loss of our beloved Tick, a Serama rooster. Tick recently won Best in his class at the FFA/Ag show in Molino with Reagan showing him. I found him laying in the middle of the coop upside down and he perked up after some medical attention but had a seizure and passed away in my arms. We sure will miss him and his high pitched cockadoodle-doos. Rest In Peace my little friend.

Sorry for the lack of updates lately. Just got over a case of COVID. 😳

Made the first round of repairs to the coop this weekend. The babies have now been moved into the large sleeping coop area. Going to work on the run repairs this week after work and should have a fully functioning enclosure by the end of the week. Once they are grown, the coop is left open during the day for full free range.

I’ll post photos of the coop and all the babies as soon as the repairs are finished. Hope you all have a fantastic week!

So no bids were made on any pumpkins. One donation was made however! Thanks goes out to Angela Schrader for being a great friend and a supporter of what my passion is to pursue this as a small business. Pick out a pumpkin or take them all! Hahaha! Your donation is going to help us make the repairs to the coop so we can keep the new birds safe from any animals that may try to harm them again. Thanks a million!

“Recoop the Coop” PUMPKIN AUCTION IS HERE!!!

Please help us “Recoop the Coop” and place your “bid” by posting the amount you wish to bid on the photo of the pumpkin you love most. They are fresh from our summer garden. Bids will start at $5. If you’re the only bidder you could score one of these beauties for only $5!

All funds raised in this auction will go towards the repairs to the coops from the damage the dogs in the neighborhood caused when they busted in and killed our birds. We are also hoping to purchase new birds to replace the 25 that were killed.

Thanks so much for your support!

As followers of Ashland Oaks Homestead, you may be aware that the majority of our chickens and all of our ducks were killed by two dogs in the neighborhood a while back and they severely damaged our coops in the process.

So we have decided to Recoop the Coop with a pumpkin auction, a melon auction and a salsa/pickle auction all with produce straight from our garden.

So here they are in all their glory with even more to come. Please consider taking part in the auction this week for a pumpkin picked fresh from our garden and help us get the necessary repairs to the coop and get our birds replaced so we can start back providing fresh eggs.

Thanks for all of your support and we can’t wait to see how this turns out. Haha! Pumpkin Auction will commence at 8:30pm tonight and will run until 8:30pm on Saturday. Winners will be announced 8am on Sunday.

Hey guys. We have been super busy here lately. This time off has allowed us plenty of yard time. We hope you have been able to create something beautiful or finish that project you haven't quite been able to get to. We are continuing to pray that each of you are staying happy and healthy.

With both myself and my wife out of work for the time being because of the state of the economy under the strain of COVID-19, we are looking to expand our homestead operations to help us financially make it through this time.

We are looking to add more layers to our current flock of 16 hens. We recently purchased 6 additional chicks but they are still a ways away from laying. If you or anyone you know has chickens, ducks, or other egg-laying birds that you are unable to keep, please contact us directly and we will gladly take them off your hands. The more layers we have, the more eggs we can sell.

Also, we are in need of wire fencing and chicken wire to complete the expansion of the coop enlargement.

Lastly, we want to get a garden that would yield enough of a harvest to add to our “inventory” for sale at great prices to everyone in the months ahead. We have a shipment of cardboard coming tomorrow and will need to get our raised beds built and filled. We have the lumber but need to get some fill dirt and top soil as well as mulch. If you know where we can find any of that free or cheap, that would be a tremendous help!

Thanks for being such a great support for Ashland Oaks Homestead and our family! We are keeping everyone in our thoughts and prayers as we continue to face trying days. Just remember to keep your heads up no matter what! A new day is coming just around the bend.

COMMUNITY: God created us for community | God said it wasn't good for man to live alone.
COMMUNITY: Attracts the Holy Spirit | Fosters love | Is Encouraging ( Dave Ramsey)

What we have witnessed in the past couple of days is the rebuild of the community we live in. The way encouragement is passed around and prayer is lifting spirits. How church is being held without the church.

Technology has allowed us to stay connected with one another. Can you imagine this happening with out the advancements we have today?

Our community is learning the importance of togetherness again. *Continue to check on your neighbor.
*Provide for each other.
*Pray for, encourage and build up one another through this and past it.

We praise you God for the gift of community. The community in which we work and live. The community that is your Body, the Church. Fill us with your Spirit today so that, as one, we reflect your light and love to each other and to the world.
In Christ we pray

AMEN

With that being said, here are our new additions. DUCKS. You can expect DUCK EGGS in your near future.

Meet Rage! She is a spunky Silver-Laced Wyandotte. She got her name from the initial acquisition of her and her 8 sister hens at which time she avoided capture until very last and when she was caught to transport to our home, she screamed like a mad banshee. We found out she does that every single time you go to catch her. Quite a set of vocals on her.

“The creation of the Wyandotte breed came about from the desire to have a chicken breed that was suitable as an ‘all-rounder’ – that is for both eggs and table fare.

Wyandotte’s are good layers of light to dark brown eggs averaging about 200 eggs/year.

Of course, other colors came along later, but the Silver Laced Wyandotte was the first and arguably the prettiest of the Wyandotte breed.”

Meet Leche! He is our handsome rooster! 🐓 He loves roosting on his driftwood perch with his ladies! He is a white Ameraucana and below is a bit of interesting info on his breed. He does a great job protecting his ladies and alerting us to possible threats from predators such as hawks.

Large fowl white Ameracuanas are one of several color varieties of Ameraucana chickens recognized by the APA. In 1984 the American Poultry Association (APA) officially recognized both bantam and large fowl (LF) Ameraucanas as “standard” breeds in several varieties (colors/patterns). Ameraucanas weren’t bred up from Araucanas. All of the varieties of Ameraucanas were created from Easter Eggers, by four breeders in the Midwest of the United States. Fox 🦊 is after the chickens again! She was trying to put them back in their pen while they were enjoying some high quality scratch! We love how much she wants to help. She loves her chicky’s!! Hoping to double the amount of our egg-laying hens soon!

Meet Skit. She is the only hen with her original name. She was named Skit because she was supposedly skittish, but she is one of the calmest and easiest to hold. She is a Blue Andalusian hen and lays white eggs! Her eggs had very thin shells at first so we added oyster shell to a feeder so she could get extra calcium in her diet.

Currently offering fresh eggs from various hens fed with non-hormone, non-steroid, vegetable scraps diet. Partial free-range. Partial time in large enclosure. $5 small/medium dozen eggs. $6 large dozen eggs. Selling only to friends and family until we grow our operation.

We currently have a rooster named Leche, and 11 hens named Skit, Rage, Rooster, Cowlick, Princess Leianegg, Queen Amidala, Dorothy, Rose, Eggsecutioner(Eggy), Kylo and Vader. We also have 5 teenage hens who are growing up to be fine, full-feathered hens! One baby was sadly lost to a hawk, hence the enclosure.

Coming this spring, we will have vegetables including tomatoes, peppers, collards and more!

We will also be selling all-natural chicken poo compost/fertilizer courtesy of our flock!
