The Finnish Lapphund is a medium sized breed that combines the look of the northern type dog with the temperament of the herding dog. Developed to live and work outside, north of the Arctic Circle, they are intelligent, alert, agile, friendly and eager to learn.

Are you interested in this breed? The OFA, working with the Finnish Lapphund Club of America, recommends the following basic health screening tests for all breeding stock:
- Hip Dysplasia
- Progressive Retinal Atrophy
- ACVO Eye Exam
Optional but recommended:
- Elbow Dysplasia
- Patellar Luxation
- Pompe’s Disease (Glycogen storage disease)
- Degenerative Myelopathy

Dogs meeting these basic health screening requirements are issued Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) numbers. For potential puppy buyers, CHIC certification is a good indicator the breeder responsibly factors good health into their selection criteria.

A few updates!

First, Sara's store will be closing next Friday, August 23rd. Remember 100% of the proceeds will be donated personally from Sara to our national.

Second, we will be doing trophy sponsorships soon! Please be on the lookout for a post with the different ribbons/trophies that can be sponsored! Your name/kennel name will be published with the sponsorship.

Third, we have updated the schedule and added some things about the venue. We are so excited to offer a national where we can truly show off how versatile our breed is!

We look forward to making this a great national for everyone!

Miss Lumi is an Envy x Oscar daughter that earned her name Forest Trail’s Lightning in a Bottle for her sassy, take on the world, then tell you about it, personality. From the pup-dates of her humans, she still runs the show. But who wouldn’t let this pretty princess be the royal she thinks she is. 😉

Sweet Bluezie Girl’s mail box has been been busy all last month!

She is now officially CH ForestTrail@Knight Under a Blue Moon. And has received her OFA results of her hips as Good and elbows as Nornal. She also had an all clear on her CAER exam.

July was a busy month for more than just the mail box! Blue herself is working on a project that we hope to elaborate on in a couple weeks. 🤫

Blue begged us not to brag, but she’s got some pretty Great news!

Forest Trail @ Knight Under a Blue Moon is (pending AKC conformation) a new Champion!

Needing only three singles to complete her title Blue wrapped up her missing points on Saturday at the Ann Arbor Kennel Club show in Monroe, Mich with a WB and BOS win for a 4 point major! We are very grateful to Judge Gary L Sparschu for finding our special girl in such a lovely group of Lappy girls.

I would be sorely remiss if I didn’t take this moment to recognize just how very grateful and blessed I am to have such a wonderful co-owner in Deanne Nelson-Bryde and her loving family! And how excited I am for the next adventures together!!💙

My silly, feral, Orange, dingo played show dog this weekend and dazzled me both days! Three shows in two days. Ryan presented him to his first point on Friday with a BOW placement at the Sarasota Kennel Club show in Tampa. Saturday he kept the ball rolling with two more BOW and OHBOB at both the St. Petersburg Dog Fanciers and Sunshine State Herding Group Assoc shows.
I had so much fun being on the end of his lead at the Saturday shows. Watching him eagerly learn ring manners and what is expected of him. I’m thrilled with how my bred by boy is maturing and can’t wait to see what his future holds! I know for certain he’s going to make it SO fun!🧡

⚠️Caution long post! ⚠️

I sat down to create a post about the fabulous last two days we had in Tampa. However, as I typed up the awards the boys received during three shows in two days, I found my attention shifting. The standard proud post of an owner/breeder receiving the sought after affirmation from judges that the dogs in their breeding program have the quality of standard that they aspire to, changed as I recalled the events of the weekend to the humble admiration of a mother viewing the loving relationship of my son with his dog.

I should say that my boys are not fans of the dog show scene. Two, actively avoid them or begrudgingly attend if I force the issue. But, Ryan… he willingly goes to every show. Even though I do understand his heart is not aflame with the desire to climb every podium or collect all the awards. In fact he’s rather indifferent to all that. But he goes and he helps me in all the set up, break down, 4000 potty walks, etc, etc! But in spite of his preferences Ryan has even gone further and expressed an interest in junior showmanship. Requesting to enter juniors with Saber any time we enter regular competition.

I didn’t really question his request. Kind of just thought he was trying to stay busy and make the best of dog show weekends. This weekend was a bit different. Due to Solo’s novice show time experience I felt it best to focus my attention on him. So I asked Ryan to handle Saber in the Breed ring. Saber adores being in the ring. Handling him is always a pleasure. They had a lovely weekend together with Saber going Select and OHBOB on Friday at the Sarasota kennel club show and was honored by Judge Mrs Leah R James with a Veteran’s group 4 at the Sunshine State Herding Group Associations Specialty show on Saturday.
It was as I typed this post, recalling how these two enjoyed themselves this weekend, that I had my realization.

Despite his own preferences Ryan knew his boy Saber enjoys his time in the ring and has been requesting extra junior entries to afford Saber extra turns to dance in the ring! 🥰

One of my all time favorite dog show weekends. 💙

Blue had the winning hand today at the Mississippi Valley Kennel Club in Gray Summit, MO!

Forest Trail @ Knight Under a Blue Moon took WB and BOS for a three point major today!

We are so grateful to Judge Dr. Sophia Kaluzniacki for finding Blue in such a lovely line up of quality Lappies. And to Alexis Taylor-Hectorne for presenting her perfectly.

But biggest thank you goes to Blue’s co-owners Deanne Nelson-Bryde and Nina Bryde for all you do! We are blessed to have you as co-owners and even more to call you friends!

Iisakki had a GREAT day today at Hendersonville Kennel Club show in Fletcher, NC!

Big Thank you to Judge Nancy Bodine for finding our boy in a large class entry of very handsome Lappies and complimenting Iisakki with Winner Dog and BOW!

Forest Trail Finnish Lapphunds is extremely proud of our young boy, Forest Trail’s Laughing in the Storm (Envy x Oscar) who is now (unofficially) only 3 points away from his championship title! Thanks to his Amazing Co-owners Natascha, Tony and girls! And to his handling team of Amanda Giles and Daniel Martin who expertly handle him to his best! 🤎
