So...
We got scammed.
It cost the Rescue $1450.

Basically I went on FB marketplace and searched out quality horse hay. I found an ad that has been up for a while and made a query.
We struck a deal and I paid for the hay and delivery. This was yesterday with delivery due today around 2pm. The load allegedly was coming from Letchfield, KY, about 3 hours away.

This am I had a message...
At 10:57, the seller required me to send another $1099 to 'insure the load'.
I canceled the deal and requested a refund. This was never mentioned until it was delivery time. They refused to refund and then stopped replying.

The bank is on it because we used the M/C card for the payment. I did this specifically. However PayPal is dodgy these days and will take over a month to reply. There isn't even a 'dispute' screen visible on PayPal these days. I don't have much faith in the process.

So we're short. I have the hay covered as far as supply and affordability.

In the next few days, I'll post a fundraiser for the Rescue. We need $1500, which will feed from 2 weeks to a month.

Sigh. People out there suck.

When dinosaurs ruled the earth...

Did you know that Equus Caballus has 64 chromosomes?

Humans have only 46.

Science has no idea what some of the chromosomes do in the horse. No all of them are 'turned on' presently in their evolutionary trail.
There is speculation that one of them would allow them to migrate using the earth's magnetic field. Another one is suspected of giving them more acute sensory 'feelers'. When attentive, a horse can sense emotion or change in surroundings even not in a direct line of sight. Horse owners who spend a great deal of time with their horses understand this well.

When dinosaurs ruled the earth.

Contrary to popular belief...
Equus Caballus originated in North America about 3,700,000 years ago, and migrated to Eurasia about 2,000,000 years ago. Their disappearance from NA until reintroduced by Europeans is still a mystery.

Well...it's been a day with mixed emotions.
Buckland Equine Rescue lost one it's oldest equines yesterday as Cocobella the Party Pony, our 35+ year old Shetland passed away of natural causes and crossed the Rainbow Bridge at approximately 1:30 yesterday afternoon. She arrived here about 13 years ago from a horrific neglect situation. She had been showing her age and declined all at once, laying down in a warm sunny spot yesterday afternoon where she passed quickly. She was buried near another rescue, a huge thoroughbred named Friar Tuck, who had been her bud before his passing a few years back...
We'll post pics of Cocobella in the coming days.

'"Phantom of the Opera", champion Tennessee Walker, was laid to rest at Buckland Equine Rescue today.

He was in his mid 30s.

Phantom enjoyed many years of retirement, and despite his failing vision, managed to get around the 100 acre wood at The Buckland very well for over a decade.

He will be missed.

Ahhh...
Tranquility restored.
As the moon rises, everyone is happy. The water lines are repaired and, for the moment at least, all is right with the world!

On this spot once sat 200 HQ 60 lb. square bales all tarped and wrapped for late winter, and 40 round bales that weighed about 1000 lbs. each.

So...massive flooding and just like the money people invested at FTX...
It's gone.

Not sure what to do next. I have hay on another field but this hurts.

And I have to get the water lines fixed. Hauling water for horses with the bucket on the front loader. Sigh.

One of our oldest residents, Misty looks hopeful that the icebox is thawing.
Thanks to Alex Parker for giving folks the heads up about the used Irishwear Rambo blankets in her shop. They most likely save the lives of two of our oldest horses.

Good Evening from The Buckland!

Getting ready for the blow...
17,000 lbs of hay deployed on the sheltered side of Showtime Hill and The Vineyard areas of the farm.
Tomorrow, the blankets go on and the run-ins get a once over.
Water hydrants wrapped and covered.
Baled hay to be dropped on the field tomorrow as well.

This was unexpected. Fingers crossed...

So…After reading this article, I was nearly sick to my stomach.

HOWEVER, it did give me pause to look around the rescue facility and realize that it’s time to overhaul and modify a few things. My feeling is that I would like to respond to some of these crisis situations when they arise, even if we are merely fostering in the short term. At this time, it would be a hard go for us to properly host any of these horses.

To that end, I need to kick off a couple of fundraisers. We need to generate about $30,000. It seems like a lot but when you consider everything we will do with that amount, it’s not much at all. Used cars are selling for more than that.

The goal…
Cross fencing part of the farm.

Rejuvenating 6 acres of prime grazing space.

Several automatic waters.

A couple of propane fired instant-on water heaters…
-For mixing hot mash and for horse bathing (no one likes ice cold showers and some horses arrive with terrible fungal infections on their skin)

Several additional run-ins.

A handful of empty shipping containers, which provides the biggest bang for the buck in regards to dry and secure storage, as well as being instant walls for a run-in or two.

Stable rejuvenation, hay barn rejuvenation, general maintenance.

I have volunteer labor for most of this work.

I am looking for anyone with ideas for fund raising… I am planning several on-line charity auctions and a few other things. I would like suggestions as to fund raising websites…I prefer NOT to use gofundme…

Put on your thinking caps and kick us a little charity when you can…one missed Starbucks drive-thru will feed hay to a retired thoroughbred…or a retired Army Old Guard horse for 3 days…

Thanks for your time today.

The report was compiled in February after two horses with the Old Guard died within days of each other.
