After 17 wonderful years on this earth, and the last 7 with us, we had to say goodnight to Emperor Hugo one last time. He crossed the rainbow bridge to doggie paradise last night around 12:15am, after two days of refusing food and being unable to drink water. While tragic and very unexpected (just three days ago, he was hiking with us like a young puppy!), Hugo went peacefully, safely in his human's arms, knowing he was well loved.
The last moments are always painful, and mourning his loss will take time. However, Hugo was full of life to the very end and adopting him for 7 years taught us many life lessons. To honor his memory, we wanted to share 17 Life Lessons from Emperor Hugo with all of his favorites.
Life Lessons from the Emperor
1. Sometimes the best things come in small packages. Like hot dogs!
2. Back scratches are amazing when someone else does them!
3. Become friends with the neighbors. They may give you treats.
4. Bones will age and groan, but growin' old is optional.
5. Life is better when you can prance.
6. Car rides are the best!
7. Nap in the sun for too long. It will be night before you know it.
8. It's okay to take some alone time.
9. And it's also okay to have grumpy days.
10. When you go to bed, make sure you find a comfy spot! Otherwise you may have a sore neck, and no one wants that.
11. Don't forget to stretch when you wake up!
12. Hot dogs are tasty treats, just don't eat too many.
13. It's okay to ask for help you need it.
14. Always! always! always! be excited to go outside and explore!
15. Sometimes dumpsters have the tastiest treats! Just not always the healthiest.
16. If you can't be a good boy, be the bestest bad boy.
17. And more than anything, be with those who love you, and know that you are loved by them.
As with all things Hugo, enjoy life. Spend time with those you love, eat the hot dogs, and prance. Don't mourn Hugo's loss, but celebrate his memory and all the wonderful adventures he had in his 17 years alive.
And finally, thank you so much to the Humane Society for Hamilton County (Indiana) for helping us adopt the Emperor. If you want to honor his life, consider donating to the Humane Society so that many more furry friends can find their fur-ever homes. 💚
With much love,
Sam and Jerimy
