Congratulations to Dr. Osofsky for being recently installed as the president of the Association of Avian Veterinarians [AAV]. Dr. O has been volunteering heavily for AAV for the past 6 years and enjoys the opportunity this gives her to contribute to the health of birds in a broader way. Currently AAV is working on projects to educate more veterinary students in avian medical care, continuing the funding of avian health grants to improve our medical knowledge, producing more client education handouts and videos, and, as always, providing avian veterinarians with cutting edge learning opportunities. Dr. O plans to continue her quest to enhance avian health and welfare both at home (here at CWPH) and worldwide (with AAV).

Carrollton West Pet Hospital TEAM was recently honored to present Dr. Osofsky, DVM, DAVBP, Avian Practice, the 2020 AAV President's Award in a surprise ceremony. This award was to be given to Dr. Osofsky at the AAV Annual Conference by the President of The AAV yet plans were changed when the conference went virtual for this year to be safe. We read the prepared statement by the AAV President recognizing Dr. O for all the passion she has for helping birds and all the hard work she has done as Chair of the education committee over the years. CONGRATULATIONS, Dr. Osofsky!!!

Dogs and cats have little choice when it comes to keeping cool in summer heat. A pets’ means of cooling off is by panting. Recognizing the signs of heatstroke will allow for prompt treatment; and time is of the essence when treating this condition.
Signs include (but are not limited to):
• body temperatures of 104-110F degrees
• excessive panting
• dark or bright red tongue and gums
• sticky or dry tongue and gums
• staggering
• stupor
• seizures
• bloody diarrhea or vomiting
• coma
• death
Please keep our furry friends cool and safe!

With cat's love of milk highly documented, it can be tempting to give in to their begging. While beloved, milk isn't easy on your cat's digestive system. Check out why here.

Cats may like milk, but milk doesn't always like them. This is because like some people, many cats are lactose intolerant. This means they lack sufficient quantities of a special enzyme called lactase to digest lactose,
