This year w**ds (that too only henbit) were pretty bad on our garlic beds which we cleaned-up fully this week. Manual w**ding is environmental friendly but it is very labor-intensive work.

Happy Pongal Everyone!

We have well prepared ahead for our 4th year organic farming journey!

We have spread the leaf mulch (Thanks to Volunteers for helping to bring the leaf mulch from the front) for all those open beds!

We have spread the last year compost (made out of previous year dead plants) on top of leaf mulch!

Also, we have started cleaning-up our 2nd plot dead plants and made a big compost pile!

Special thanks to Dhivya, Nithin & Volunteers (December) to make this happen quickly!

We have also started the seedlings work for upcoming season in our greenhouse (will post photos in the next post)!

Spent last few weeks to clean-up old/dead Okra plants, Brinjal Plants & Tomato Plants in our front 1/2 acre plot and made a big compost pile!😅

Last few weeks we were busy with planting fall garlic and also cleaning up our front plot (old/dead eggplants, okra & tomato plants)! Enjoyed the warmer weather too!🌤

Finally we got some time this week to work on Tindora (Kovakkai / Dondakaya) cuttings & also move all those root plants inside the greenhouse (due to the colder weather) which would be needed for the next season planting and also for selling too! 🌱

Finally, we got some rains for these little garlic plants today!

Prepared the beds and planted garlic couple of weeks back. Today spread mulch which helps to control the w**ds, retain the moisture, protect from cold weather and also feeds these plants over time!

We just grow our garlic naturally using only mulch & compost!

We have started transplanting Turkey berry (Sundakkai in Tamil), Okras, Eggplants, Green chilies, Bell peppers, Tomatoes & Indian Spinaches (Thottakura & Malabar)!

We do enjoy observing nature in action on our farm!

We saw killdeer nest on our farm! Killdeer nests are very fascinating to observe. Killdeer eggs typically hatch in about 24-28 days, will post about hatchlings when the time comes!

Also, we installed couple of birdhouses this week to attract more birds. By providing suitable nesting opportunities, we can help support local bird populations and contribute to the ecological balance on our farm.

Working on these tasks on a farm can be quite rewarding! Spreading compost helps improve soil fertility and structure, which is essential for healthy crop growth. Leveling raised beds ensures uniformity and efficient irrigation, while covering them with w**d covers reduces the need for manual w**ding and minimizes competition for resources.

🌱It was a great week for planting our first veggies of this year at our organic farm, and we had the joy of getting our hands dirty planting onions! It's amazing to be part of the process from start to finish, knowing each bulb will grow into something nourishing. Here's to the hard work and dedication of small farmers everywhere!🙏

Getting more work done when weather gets better at a time!
1. Removed w**ds and added more leaf mulch on Garlic beds
2. Spreading compost on more beds and also added hardwood mulch on pathways to control w**ds.
3. Started more seedlings (Peppers & Eggplants) which needs at least 8 weeks before transplant.

Next two weeks - prepare 10+ onion beds (mix leaf mulch & compost layers using only hand tools) and setup irrigations to plant onions by March 1st week.
