Nothing ventured, nothing gained! Nothing invested, nothing earned!
.
Barbers love to complain, especially the ones whoāve actually put little to no effort into building their careers outside of getting a Barber license and merely showing up to work when they please.
.
No discipline, no worth ethic, no commitment, and taking no risks!
.
Iāve often seen two Barbers start their careers around the same time, given the same opportunities and disadvantages, both with the same supposed āpassion for barberingā, and then watched one of them just crush every goal in front of them while the other just kept goofing off and getting no where and still complain about how hard Barbering is.
.
The difference was purely attitude and their willingness (or unwillingness) to succeed.
.
I hate hearing new Barbers say how passionate they are about Barbering. Youāre not passionate about it, youāre infatuated with the ideal of it. Show me your passion when youāre actually exhausting yourself and your resources to make a career as a Barber! Then I might beleive you.

I donāt know if todayās generation of Barbers are so far removed from knowing their history, but Barbering as a trade and industry was built on the walk-in client!
.
Your grandfatherās grandfather never made an appointment for a haircut. If he needed a haircut, heād just go down that day to the local Barbershop and waited his turn to sit in the barber chair.
.
Today, itās almost frowned upon by Barbers to show up without an appointment, as if the act in and of itself is a sign of disrespect. Walk-inās are often rudely greeted or ignored or abruptly shone off with the words āweāre appointment only!ā
.
Now, my business has always been appointment-based since I first opened 13 years ago, long before it was the industry norm. But back then; and still now, we welcome walk-inās if we have availability because thatās an opportunity to be in the service of someone who may become a potential returning client. Even if they donāt return, thatās business that filled up an empty time slot.
.
More importantly if we canāt accommodate them as a walk-in, we will apologize that we canāt due to unavailability, cordially explain how they may book an appointment for a later date if they so choose, and then thank them for stopping by.
.
Being a Barber is about being of service,ā¦.to everyone youāre in contact with while at work. Relationship building isnāt limited to the clients who pay you, itās also how you interact with the people in the community you serve!!!

Carpenters will tell you to āmeasure twice, cut onceā when it comes to sawing wood. As a Barber, I always prefer to ask more questions during a consultation with new clients than less questions, so that youāre better equipped to tackle the job at hand. And when youāre unsure, go back and ask the client again what they wanted because itās better to be safe than sorry.
.
We should be far past the days of āwinging itā as a Trade, and definitely past the days of imposing whatever haircut we want to give on clients who didnāt give us that artistic freedom during the consultation!!

āSiri, play āitās so hard to say goodbye to yesterdayā by Boys To Men!!ā
.
.
I remember all of my clients who sat with me over a long period of time and then had to move away for work or other reasons. I remember them because they werenāt just a transaction, they were a relationship. And I remember the end of their last service where I had to say goodbye to them, wish them well on their journey and next chapter, and thank them for their business, their friendship, and their loyalty.
.
I reminisce on those moments from time to time, because I know my growth over the years had as much to do with them sitting with me as everyone elseās that still continues to do so. I hope that life is treating them well, and that they valued our time together as much I did.

Wherever you guys are, I havenāt forgotten about you buddy!!ā¤ļøš¤š½

If I tell you it sounds good and Iāll hit you up later, it means youāre not going to hear from me and Iāll see you when I see you š
.
Barbering isnāt just about standing on your feet all day, because when done right, Barbering is also about relationship building. And if you know me, you know that I put relationship building above anything else that weāre responsible for as Barbers.
.
That means that Barbering can be as mentally and emotionally taxing being invested in the wellbeing of your clients, as it can be physically taxing standing on your and cutting hair all day. It is cliche to say that Barbers are also therapists and counselors, but it is very true of good Barbers who transcend the role of just being a hair cutter. That is where true success as a Barber is built!!
.
So be unapologetic as a Barber to protect your need for rest and peace to reset, because you can not give to others of yourself as a Barber if youāre constantly running on an empty tank.

Expecting to be successful as a Barber without doing any of the work yourself will get you as far as driving a car with no tires!!
.
How many would be willing to ditch the tireless car and start walking in the direction you were headed? Or would you just keep sitting and hoping someone will call a tow truck for you?
.
Barbering, like anything else in life worth having, requires an investment in time, effort, sacrifice, and a willingness to do for yourself what others wonāt donāt for you,ā¦because they shouldnāt have to do it for you!!
.
Itās like Barbers who print out business cards and never hand them out willingly to strangers to drum up potential business. Instead they while on to them honestly thinking masses of strangers will walk up inquiring what they do and where they work! As my 8 year old son would sayā¦.āBRUH!!ā š
.
Stop being a lazy Barber sitting around waiting for rain to fall during a droughtā¦.go out and do what is needed while you prepare for the āeventualā rainfall.

More Barbers today focus on how to execute a perfectly technically sound haircut because social media shows so many Barbers demonstrating haircuts in 4k HD points of view,ā¦.I have to admit that itās impressive watching this new generation work.
.
BUT ultimately Iāve learned that what matters most to the majority of paying clients is that they receive a proper haircut that is the byproduct of a greater overall client experience.
.
Most old school Barbers, myself included, keep our cutting techniques to the fundamentals, discipled to execute most haircuts efficiently without using an array of sections, snips, angles and tools for one haircut. This allows us to give a good haircut while also being able to really engage in conversations and relationships building with our clients.
.
So many young Barbers are consumed with impressing clients and even other Barbers with how they can cut hair technically that they often times forget that simplicity is the better road to success.
.
I love they element of continuing education and pushing oneself to improve in their craft, but not at the costs of letting oneās ego to be āthat Barberā compromise their ability to stay locked into the service engagement that actually matters even more longterm towards success.
