Today's Interesting Avian Story #2.......

See that guy?

It's a Vermillion Flycatcher (we looked it up).

And it's the first time we've ever seen one here at Tierra Madre. He just flew up & landed on the arena fence.

From what I learned, they're native to northern Central America & the southern area of Arizona. Recently, though, a number of them have been spotted in the Phoenix area.

Definitely a very pretty guy.

Hope he stays around.......

Wednesday.......

Okay - we had a little excitement this morning.

Can you see Owl - one of our local Great Horned Owls - in the tree? All puffed up to make himself/herself look bigger?

Well, that's because three Harris's Hawks were stalking him/her.

They were a couple of trees away but, because those guys hunt in packs, our friend was in jeopardy. Owl was in a good spot, though, all nestled in the tree where they couldn't get at him/her through the branches. So, eventually, they left.

I know that because, soon after, I was in my truck heading to the mailbox & I spotted one of the hawks high atop a power pole. And, when I made a right turn & went up that road, the other two were sitting on another pole.

Our friend was no longer in jeopardy.

Whew.

Interesting little drama, no?

Friday morning…….On this first cool day in 6 months, all the kids - especially Tally & Jake & Winchester - took the opportunity to air it out a little.Note Tally, who’s gotten over her laminitic episode.Good, you guys!

I’ve been teaching Journey how to play the bass fence. Here she is, strumming away on the ‘A’ string. She has her rhythm down pretty well, wouldn’t you agree?

Tuesday, 5PM……. Look at this - ‘Rocky’, eating a piece of horse treat while Mystery looks on & decides that she’s disgusted with the whole thing. Hahahahaha! Good, you guys!

Tuesday, 7:40PM…… This is real short & only catches a few notes but Owl (actually, both of them) are up in my desert willow where you can’t see them.

When I was moving my truck to make way for the hay truck to get by early this morning, I saw this. WARNING: It is NOT exciting. Well, except for the fact that I ran into little Chianti while she was out in the arena, that is. Thank you.

Our Story

Founded by Jim Gath in 2005, Tierra Madre Horse & Human Sanctuary, 501 (c)(3) provides a compassionate facility for the full circle of healing between horses and humans. The magnificent herd of horses who have graced our presence, many coming from lives of abuse and misfortune, are honored, cared for and brought back to health and happiness they may have never known. The horses in return are the primary healers and facilitators for providing a non-judgmental space for children and adults to realize more productive and fulfilled lives. Through our specialized programs, we empower individuals to gain a sense of accomplishment and achievement by working with the horses in a variety of non-mounted activities. The support from our wide-ranging community and dedicated sponsors allows us to help various groups of differently abled, including autism spectrum individuals, to realize the life changing gifts we all receive through working with our equine partners.

Our mission is to provide a safe haven for the horses and people who enter the gates of Tierra Madre Horse & Human Sanctuary. Through the support of our community and generous donations from our sponsors, we can offer positive, life changing programs for children and adults including those with developmental challenges including autism spectrum. We are committed to supporting the full circle of healing from horses to humans.
