Marian Lyons, Certified Dog trainer

Marian Lyons, Certified Dog trainer Training in obedience and problem solving, fearlful dogs and some types of aggression. At this time I do private lessons. I charge $60 per session.
(2)

I have experience teaching obedience classes, and working with dogs with mild to moderate aggression, and fear based behaviors. I worked at Cedar Run (volunteer) and assisted the head trainer there for two years after my certification where I learned a lot about behaviors in dogs. I also did some obedience classes and one on one session at Tailsawaggn in Southwest Cedar Rapids. I am hoping to start up classes again in 2021.

Everyone who is thinking of getting dogs should read this because you need to understand this reality:

***I am a 21st century dog.***
-I'm a Malinois.
Overskilled among dogs, I excel in all disciplines and I'm always ready to work: I NEED to work.
But nowadays I get asked to chill on the couch all day everyday.

-I am an Akita Inu.
My ancestors were selected for fighting bears.
Today I get asked to be tolerant and I get scolded for my reactivity when another approaches me.

-I am a Beagle.
When I chase my prey, I raise my voice so the hunters could follow.
Today they put an electric collar on me to shut up, and you make me come back to you - no running - with a snap of your fingers.

-I am a Yorkshire Terrier.
I was a terrifying rat hunter in English mines.
Today they think I can't use my legs and they always hold me in their arms.

-I'm a Labrador Retriever.
My vision of happiness is a dive into a pond to bring back the duck he shot to my master.
Today you forget I'm a walking, running, swimming dog; as a result I'm fat, made to stay indoors, and to babysit.

-I am a Jack Russell.
I can take on a fox, a mean badger, and a rat bigger than me in his den.
Today I get scolded for my character and high energy, and forced to turn into a quiet living room dog.

-I am a Siberian Husky.
Experienced the great, wide open spaces of Northern Europe, where I could drag sleds for long distances at impressive speeds.
Today I only have the walls of the house or small garden as a horizon, and the holes I dig in the ground just to release energy and frustration, trying to stay sane.

-I am a border collie
I was made to work hours a day in partnershipwith my master, and I am an unmistakable artist of working with the herd.
Today they are mad at me because, for lack of sheep, I try to check bikes, cars, children in the house and everything in motion.

I am ...
I am a 21st century dog.
I'm pretty, I'm alert, I'm obedient, I stay in a bag...but I'm also an individual who, from centuries of training, needs to express my instincts, and I am *not* suited for the sedentary life you'd want me to lead.
Spending eight hours a day alone in the house or in the garden - with no work and no one to play or run with, seeing you for a short time in the evening when you get home, and only getting a small toilet walk will make me deeply unhappy.
I'll express it by barking all day, turning your yard into a minefield, doing my needs indoors, being unmanageable the rare times I'll find myself outside, and sometimes spending my days sunk, sad, lonely, and depressed, on my pillow.
You may think that I should be happy to be able to enjoy all this comfort while you go to work, but actually I’ll be exhausted and frustrated, because this is absolutely NOT what I'm meant to do, or what I need to be doing.
If you love me, if you've always dreamed of me, if my beautiful blue eyes or my athletic look make you want me, but you can't give me a real dog's life, a life that's really worth living according to my breed, and if you can't offer me the job that my genes are asking, DO NOT buy or adopt me!
If you like the way I look but aren't willing to accept my temperament, gifts, and traits derived from long genetic selection, and you think you can change them with only your good will, then DO NOT BUY OR ADOPT ME.
I’m a dog from the 21st century, yes, but deep inside me, the one who fought, the one who hunted, the one who pulled sleds, the one who guided and protected a herd still lives within.
So think **very** carefully before you choose your dog. And think about getting two, rather than one, so I won't be so very lonely waiting for you all day. Eight or ten hours is just a workday to you, but it's an eternity for me to be alone.

I would like to thank everyone, the 330 likes, and the 343 followers of my dog training page. I have had it for approximately 12 years now. Unfortunately Facebook limits me on what I can post. They have tried to charge me with advertisements I did not make. Not sure yet if I am willing to pay for something that did not buy. I did win with my credit card company but it doesn't effect what Facebook decides to do. So I may give in so I can reach more people.
Over the years I have picked up quite a few clients with this page. My page (in the past) actually help put my name on Google as a trainer to help reactive and aggressive dogs.
I am posting this to let you know I still do private sessions in the Cedar Rapids area.

Just a reminder if you have been with my page for a while or not. I have posted quite a while ago things on dog training and dog behaviors.
I posted a few articles on what I teach in the first obedience class. Exactly what I have taught in the past on the first night of class. That included focus/look, sit, sit/stay, come/recall and a few pointers. So if you want to teach your dog a good sit/stay take a look back a ways at that post. If you are interested in it and can't find it let me know.

- “Room 8” ( 1947–1968 ) BEAUTIFUL CAT STORY....GOOD READ

Room 8 was a neighborhood cat who wandered into a classroom in 1952 at Elysian Heights Elementary School in Echo Park, California. He lived in the school during the school year and then disappeared for the summer, returning when classes started again. This pattern continued without interruption until the mid-1960s.
News cameras would arrive at the school at the beginning of the year waiting for the cat's return; he became famous and would receive up to 100 letters a day addressed to him at the school. Eventually, he was featured in a documentary called Big Cat, Little Cat and a children's book, A Cat Called Room 8. Look magazine ran a three-page Room 8 feature by photographer Richard Hewett in November 1962, titled "Room 8: The School Cat". Leo Kottke wrote an instrumental called "Room 8" that was included in his 1971 album, Mudlark.
As he got older, Room 8 was injured in a cat fight and suffered from feline pneumonia, so a family near the school volunteered to take him in. The school's janitor would find him at the end of the school day and carry him across the street.
His obituary in the Los Angeles Times rivaled that of major political figures, running three columns with a photograph. The cat was so famous that his obituary ran in papers as far away as Hartford, Connecticut. The students raised the funds for his gravestone. He is buried at the Los Angeles Pet Memorial Park in Calabasas, California. 🐈 ❤️

This was my very first private client about 11 years ago. Her name is Stella and is a Silver Labrador. My neighbor has referred me and I was very appreciative. She was the perfect dog for being a first client for me as she seemed to understand everything I taught her and the owners had me back twice more. I have learned a lot more in the years since. More about aggressive dogs, fearful dogs, stubborn dogs, and just their personality by nature of the breed. Not long after this I joined up with Penny Colby and assisted her in training many types of dogs with many different issues at Cedar Run. It was a blessing to work with her, and see the many different issues dogs can have. I have also learned you can't always train the owners to stick with the training. Dog obedience isn't for tricks, it is giving your dog confidence, bonding with you and better manners. Isn't Stella beautiful! 🐶♥️
