Reason #28 that I love growing my own flowers: I get to harvest flowers at any stage I want. Some roses in this arrangement are just barely budding open while others are in full glory.

Ok, so many I haven’t really sat down to make a list of ALL the reasons I love local flowers, but I probably should.

I can tell you my top 3 reasons though.

1- There is no comparison when it comes to quality compared to product flown in from other countries
2- They last much longer than your other flowers and as a bonus you get flowers that aren’t typical with other florists like sweet peas, zinnias, and others that don’t ship well or last long
3- Spending time outside feeds my soul — Maybe this should be my number 1

Really I think all of three of those reasons deserve the number 1 spot and make it worth it to grow even a few flowers in your yard/garden/home. Make the space and the time to grow a few flowers and you’ll experience the joy for yourself.

I’m curious what YOUR top reason would be. Let me know in the poll.

I was reminded of a quote today when trying to capture the brilliant colors of these pansies this morning. I don’t feel like you get the real deal looking at this photo. You’re missing the slight color differences.

The edges of this flower have a more vibrant purple. The centers filled with their oranges and yellows just seem more alive in person. There is more veining in the petals than shows on your screen. To grow flowers is to love flowers and to notice all their little intricacies.

Relating to his experience with painting, Richard G Scott shared his thoughts that I feel apply so well to growing and designing with flowers. “Wherever I go I see beauty in ways that would not be perceived with the same intensity and variety had I not followed that prompting to try something I had never tried before.”

What have you tried that brought you a new perspective and has taught you to look closer at life and all the beauty around you? What are you prompted to learn more about?

Designing with roses because it’s June in Utah.

My mother grows the most beautiful roses and she’s gracious enough to let me take home any flowers I like from her yard.

I was inspired by the huge, gorgeous pinks with the yellow tints on the outer petals so I also gathered some light pink, soft cream, and of course, my favorite perfect peach spray rose. The next day I had to go back for some yellow spray roses that were soft, yet just bright enough to match the rose that started this all. (Can something be soft and bright at the same time?) She has the perfect palette of roses to work with.

I know it’s Father’s Day in a few hours so along with the shoutout to my mother, I am also so grateful for all my dad teaches (or at least tries to teach 😅) me.

It’s been 3+ weeks since I planted over ten different veggies and flowers into milk jugs. Over the last two years I’ve noticed winter sewing takes longer to germinate but is way less work to start than soil blocking and better germination (for me) than direct sewing into the ground.

I used vermicompost from my worm bin and reused peat moss from some winter-forced tulips that are long gone but were a pick-me-up in the middle of a long, cold, and extra-wet January.

Do you have what it takes to make your own wreath? You might be pleasantly surprised at how little you need.

I’ll share what I used to make myself a Christmas wreath -
-wire cutters
-clippers
-grapevine wreath base
-silk ribbon
-paddle wire
-Christmas music
-4-5 evergreen branches
-foraged/dried goods (privet berries, dried/dying red hypericum, baby’s breath)
-helpers (only one pictured here)

Most of those are optional and you can change anything up to fit your personal style. Who’s ready to make a wreath now? I’ve got the most delicate and slightly wild grapevine wreaths for anyone interested.

In an effort to do my part to help reduce water use in my landscape and I planted 70 of these tall sedum that will be perfect for a fall harvest and over 300 short sedum that I plan to use anytime. They are tiny plugs now but will grow big (hopefully) in a year.

Sedum, like most plants, have so many countless varieties and grow at so many different lengths too. I’m planning to use the shorter lengths for wearables and the longer lengths for arrangements.

BTW, next time I get such a big idea to remove all my side strips please remind me how much work it is. My husband and I did everything from removing the sod and three inches of dirt, hauling it away, updating the sprinkler zone with a pressure reducer and drip system, and planting the plants. Big shoutout to my family who also helped watch our kids and helped us in the final stretch of planting everything. It would not be finished without them!

What’s better than homegrown fruit and vegetables? Or, as my children call them, “homemade tomatoes.” As a flower farmer I know that “homemade” flowers are way better than anything you’ll get at the grocery store just like your tomatoes, bell peppers, and anything else you can think of. So go ahead and support your local flower farmer today!

Unrelated to tomatoes, it’s time to start your cool weather (overwintered) plants. I’m going big on iceland poppies this coming year. If you want to join me, I’ve got poppy seeds available for you to purchase. DM if you’re interested!

So grateful for all I learned and the people I met while volunteering at the . From all the instructors who were amazing, especially who taught me as I assisted during his head piece demonstration and who invited me to design with her after being lead assistant for her class. I’m biased because I actually saw this class and helped pull flowers for it, but they were the most gorgeous, American-grown flowers from .

I also got to meet the most amazing florists who were the attendees as I helped them over the last couple days. I can’t leave out all the amazing photographers that I met as well. Shout out to for teaching me to be a lighting specialist and to for being the sweetest as we worked together during the retreat.

I’m grateful to all the other volunteers who I got to know so well as we worked together. I learned as much (or more) from them as we talked and walked and worked around the gorgeous together. We definitely got our steps in everyday (by 10am 🏃🏽‍♀️).

The biggest shoutouts go to and my husband for giving me a chance to experience everything! The event was bigger than life with designer gowns, never-ending flowers, and the best of the best teachers. Now I hope everyone gets some rest before they start planning again for next year!

Bugs! They’re definitely a part of flower farming. Some eat your plants and others eat the bugs that eat your plants. I released some green lacewing eggs and believe I’m seeing the adult stage now.

What are your favorite books, blogs, or other sources to learn about insects? Share with me so I can learn more! One of my favorite places to learn from is . I love because they have their Master Gardeners who can help you answer any questions, whether it’s about bugs, soil, or plants that need a little help.

Now that I’ve talked about bugs, let’s appreciate how beautiful this rose is! It fades to the most gorgeous soft peach color. It’s not mine, but I tell my mom all the time that I want to pot it up and take it back to my house when she’s gone. Please tell me I’m not the only one who wants all the plants from their relatives.

I never knew I loved the color orange so much.

This bouquet is 100% homegrown. I love the poppies and plan to grow so many of these next year! Give me a 🧡 if you want some seeds for next year too.

Also, here is to hoping I win the book from .stems for her analogous design contest. 🤞🏻

What is it about poppies that is your favorite? They’re a for me because they are cold hardy and their blooms are irresistible. I’ll admit I’m still learning how to start them from seed. Two falls ago - direct seed in the garden in the fall and one popped up (which is actually where these beauties came from). Last fall, or really winter, I tried starting them indoors and had better although still poor germination rates. Each year I’m getting better and I think next year I may try starting my own but will have a backup of buying starts from someone whose already really successful at starting these beauties.

I found a local place in SLC that has seeds in stock so you can pick up and they ship if you’re too lazy to make the drive or aren’t local.

I’ll have the link to True Leaf Market in my bio for a little bit for you to check out.

Spent a few hours yesterday getting the newest family pets. Shoutout to for helping us get our first hive of bees. We’re excited to learn more about bees.

Speaking of learning, it’s one of the main reasons I started flower farming. I wanted to learn more about how to grow beautiful flowers. I’m still learning all about how to grow flowers, but since I’ve got a few years of experience, I decided to add a little more to the mix.

Last year I enjoyed learning from several Utah florists in the art of flower arranging. ( ) I’m even volunteering at this summer to learn more and meet others who want to do the same. You should definitely join me at the summit!

This year is all about the smaller farm animals since we got our worms accustomed to our home a couple months ago and were gifted a thriving hive. I tried to throw a new kitten for my little girls’ birthday but my husband had to draw the line somewhere. 😜

Thanks for following along on this crazy ride as I continue learning more each year! I hope to be able to share more of what I’m learning through blogs and YouTube so keep an eye out to learn along with me.

Along with growing a family and planting and harvesting the flowers, I’ve been hard at work updating my bookkeeping with EICAP and creating a new way to purchase flowers (besides DMs in Instagram, although that still works too) with . Check out the link in bio to see what I’ve got for sale currently! For now, pick up only unless arrangements are made otherwise.

For florists, I’ve also got an amazing set up for you to get amazing blooms from many (15 at last count) other flower farms in the area with one pick up time and location. This saves us both time and energy on ordering the best blooms around! is rocking it and I am so glad to be a part of this group!

Meet Red Devon, one of five of the new daffodils planted last fall. She’s a beauty in all her bright yellow and orange. She softens to the most beautiful soft colors as she ages, like all daffodils I have planted so far. Less than 100 were planted last year as I wasn’t sure if I would like her. I’ve decided she’s a keeper. Her season is already done as I’ve harvested the last few of the year. I’ve got two bouquets of this variety left. Claim yours today, and if not this week, plan on getting some for next year!

Does anyone else love to reward themselves for cleaning their house?! Or are you more like me and need a little motivation to clear the counters and wipe the table? 🧹

Whether you need a reward or motivation, I’ve got spring flowers coming in hot in the next few weeks! Let me know when you’re ready to start your spring cleaning and we will get flowers lined up for you! 💐

Disclaimer: These flowers were extras from a custom order, although I will have lilies and carnations (if they overwintered for me ) a little later this year.

The same tulip side by side - one reflexed and one left as it was grown. Both pretty! What ways do you prefer to enjoy
tulips?

I was debating whether I should go big, just dabble or not plant any tulips this year. I decided not to plant any and then I found a good deal and went bigger than I ever thought I would - to the tune of 1,750 tulips. To some this might be a small number, but with my small plot and my small workforce (me, myself, and I), I think I’ll stay pretty busy this spring.

Let’s hope this year was cold and wet enough to produce some beautiful tulips with long stems.

Want some of these beauties for your home? 💌 Send me a DM and I’ll put you on a list to contact once mine start popping out of the ground.

I love that many flowers grown for cutting and arranging are dual purpose. Their seeds and/or petals can be eaten. Their roots and leaves can be used in herbal tinctures or natural dyes. I’m sure I’m missing many more uses. How do you go with your cut flower garden?

Has anyone ever grown amaranth and then used the seeds to cook or grind into flour? Please give me tips and tricks if you have. I’m interested in learning how to do this. Maybe this year I’ll try!

Look at all the fun colors of yarrow we’ve got growing! I’ve heard that yarrow dries well. Who out there has tried it before? At C & C Flower Farm, we air dry everything which means no chemicals for you. We also don’t spray anything but organic materials in our garden so when you support this local flower farm, you’re supporting organic growing.

Give me some love below if you also choose to grow things organically. ♥️

: are geotropic. This means they respond to gravity. If they are laid down or placed in an arrangement at an angle their tips will turn upward and will remain so even if placed vertically later. Crazy, right?! Can you see a few of the tips that turned upwards on me?

Other interesting facts about snaps:

-There are three kinds of blooms
1- traditional | you can make these individual blossoms look like a dragon that’s opening and closing its mouth by pinching the back of the blossom
2- azalea | double petals
3- open-face | single petals

This year I’ve got types 2 and 3 and both are 💯. Can you tell the difference from the stems in this picture?

-They’re edible 🤤 Have you ever eaten snapdragon blossoms?

-They can be overwintered depending on your gardening zone and the microclimates of your growing spaces.
