Reasons Why You Should Spay Your Dog
The most common reason to spay your dog is unwanted pregnancies and dealing with heat cycles. The ideal time to spay is 5-5 ½ months of age. Research shows about a 70% less chance of mammary tumors if spayed before your dog’s first heat cycle. Dogs that are over 5 years old are more likely to get pyometra and ovarian cysts.
Pyometra is a serious condition where the uterus fills with purulent material (pus). Signs of pyometra include abdominal distention, vulvular discharge, lethargy, vomiting, lack of appetite, drinking lots of water, etc. Pyometra can affect many organs, which can make a pet very sick or even kill her.
Pyometra can rupture which leads to having purulent material leaking into the abdomen (septic peritonitis). Signs of ovarian cysts include pressure, bloating, swelling or pain in the lower abdomen. If the cyst ruptures, it can cause sudden, severe pain.
The patient described below is a 13-year-old, non-spayed female that presented with lethargy, vomiting and not eating. Bloodwork was ran and her white blood cells were increased and radiographs were taken. A large circular mass was noted in the abdomen. Upon surgery to spay, she had a very large ovarian cyst (one of the largest Dr. LoBue has seen) and a small portion of pyometra.
