NEW PHOTO ON THREAD!! *Twenty year old kitty alert!* Sweet senior Baby loves napping on laps @ BACC! Baby is a 20 year old, neutered black and white dsh cat that came in because his owner could no longer keep him. A volunteer writes: Sweet Baby is no longer a baby; he qualifies as a senior citizen now. He is calm and friendly and spends most of his time snoozing, dreaming of his forever retirement home. Baby previously lived with a dog and enjoys staying close to people. He would love to spend his golden years in peaceful bliss with a loving person or family. He is available at the Brooklyn shelter.

Signs of dog gum disease and how to prevent it from happening to your dog.

05/13/2019

Plastic toys are exposing pets to chemicals that may cause cancer. Kimberly Wooten, a graduate student in environmental toxicology at Texas Tech, and her colleagues put plastic dog toys in a solution designed to simulate dog saliva and conditions designed to simulate chewing. They found that the toys treated this way leached BPA and phthalates much faster than they would when simply exposed to the outdoors. BPA and phthalates, chemicals commonly used in plastics, have been connected to cancer and other problems in rats and humans. Some of these chemicals are banned in the production of children’s’ toys, baby bottles, and sippy cups. We are not aware of any such ban in toys for dogs.

This is an important study, but it is one of the first of its type, and it starts more questions than it answers. The results of this study are being reported by Environmental Health News. BPA and phthalates have not been tested in dog or cats (that we are aware of), so there is no knowing at this point what would be a safe level of exposure.

If you want to play it safe, here’s a list of pet toy manufacturers that promise BPA-free toys:
• Nylabone
• Kong
• Planet Dog
• West Paw Design
• Jolly Pets
• Premier Pets
• Chewber Inc.
