Podiatry for horses means the use of shoeing and trimming to correct orthopedic abnormalities. It is not the same as a regular farrier appointment.

It is a veterinary prescription.

Our biomechanical gait analysis evaluates how a horse moves and how their hoof balance, or lack thereof, contributes to any gait abnormalities. X-rays are needed to evaluate the condition of the feet and detect imbalances and abnormalities within the hoof. With specific pathology such as navicular disease, tendon lesions and hock and stifle-problems, specific shoeing can assist in comprehensive management of the injury or disease.

With our in-house farrier, Austin MacLeod, we can give your horse the specific shoeing that is needed for complete recovery or disease management. We are also happy to work with your farrier as they are available once the podiatry prescription is established. It is the team effort that will make a great outcome. Based on the information on the x-rays our farrier can trim the feet, and directly after that I can evaluate the result of the trim with another X-ray. We will also x-ray different therapeutic shoes on your horse for their greatest benefit.

We do not charge for post shoeing x-rays. We care deeply that boney alignment is correct with the therapeutic shoeing application. Because therapeutic podiatry is a veterinary prescription, we will require rechecks at 2 and 4 weeks to evaluate how the boney alignment is changing in the hoof and leg.

Once the podiatry prescription is established, and your horse is going better, you can return to your farrier if you wish. We are happy to work with them to get things right for your horse.Initial podiatry appointments can take up to 3 hours to get everything precisely correct. We take multiple x-rays during the shoeing to check for boney alignment and accuracy. You are welcome to stay with your horse or drop your horse off in the evening and pick it up the next day, shod and ready to go.

Horses often tend to be slightly asymmetric.

Many riders don’t realize that challenges they face in their riding can often develop from issues with the horse’s straightness, stemming from this asymmetry.

Issues such as the horse pushing in or out in one direction, being heavy on one rein, having trouble picking up one canter lead, or struggling to maintain rhythm in one direction, are just a few examples of the symptoms that can appear due to a horse’s unaddressed asymmetry.

For more about equine postural asymmetry check out Andria’s blog article: https://www.massievet.com/post/equine-posture-and-health-why-your-horse-s-posture-matters

Our wellness exams include suggestions to balance your horse's asymmety and uncover medical issues that may be causing it. Call us to schedule your wellness exam today 541-636-1191

This has been a challenging day on the facebooks that started at 6:00 am with a call out to followers of Southern Oregon & United States Equine to recommend, or not, our veterinary practice for all the world to see. They did the same to Dr. Bill Bridges the day before. I’m guessing other practice reviews will follow.

It’s truly disheartening to see some clients true colors show knowing full well we can see every comment. People we have shown up for in the middle of the night for emergencies or shifted our entire day to help. Equally astonishing to have someone slam your practice that you have never served or met before. To those of you that defended us or posted kind and thoughtful recommendations, thank you.

These comments will be out there forever. Keaton and I refuted every single slander with reason and truth. If we have helped you and you have good things to say, please rally to our support and obliterate the negativity spewed there. It’s absolutely outrageous. We are sincere about building relationships with our clients but it goes both ways. If you have something you want addressed call us or email us, don’t throw it out on social media.

This is why vets are leaving practice in droves. This social media activity is why the su***de rate is so high among vets and why no one wants to do equine practice anymore. Here’s the post link and a pic of it.

We recommend examining foals within 24 hours of birth to make sure mama and foal are doing well. A new foal exam (also known as a neonatal exam) allows the veterinarian to evaluate a foal from head to tail to check for overall health as well as identify any congenital (born with) or acquired health problems.

Key areas that are evaluated during a new foal exam are
🐴 the eyes (to check for cataracts)
🐴 mouth (to check for a cleft palate or an over/under bite)
🐴 heart (to check for a murmur)
🐴 lungs (to check for aspiration pneumonia)
🐴 ribs (to check for fractures due to birth)
🐴 belly button (to check for bleeding, infection, or a hernia)
🐴 legs (to check for crookedness).
🐴 18-24 hours after the foal has nursed, check IgG levels (antibodies from mare)

In addition, a blood test is recommended to check the foal’s immunoglobulin (IgG) level, which measures how much protection the foal received from the mare’s colostrum. If problems are identified early, treatment can be targeted at correcting them before they become a problem, or monitoring them to makes sure they resolve. Call 541-636-1191 to schedule your foal's wellness exam.

“A study conducted in 2021 by Washington State University found that, out of 11 commercially available probiotic supplements analyzed, none of them met the label claim of viability (the number of live microorganisms in each serving), and many did not even contain the probiotic species listed on the label.”

Kristen Janicki writes the horse feed industry has been overtaken by a broadly unregulated supplement industry

When we do a lameness or soundness evaluation we always video your horse in movement and assess abnormalities with our eyes. Then to validate our findings we use our Equinosis Q Lameness locater software. How does it work? Wireless sensors track horse movement accurately to less than 1 millimeter. Algorithms, based on decades of equine research, compute precise lameness metrics the human eye can’t see.

Horses with painful limbs shift biomechanical loads to less painful limbs. Regardless of the mechanism a particular horse will use to shift load, the result can be measured by changes to the horse’s natural symmetry. The Q measures asymmetry with remarkable accuracy.

The Q measures movements of the head and pelvis, calculating asymmetric weight bearing on the limbs with precision the human eye can’t match. With stride cycle timing via a pastern sensor, The Q determines when in the stride it is occurring – at impact, midstance, or push-off.

We often use the Q for a movement and gait analysis when the horse is sound as a baseline. This information is valuable to you because it can inform training practices and hint at subtle biomechanical issues you can address BEFORE it becomes a problem. Simply add the Q to your annual exam.

Schedule your soundness exam and gait analysis by calling 541-636-1191. Additional info here! https://equinosis.com/horse-owners/

What measures have you taken to reduce fire risks in your barn? 🧯

According to the National Interagency Fire Center, in 2024 there have been 16,940 reported wildfires in the U.S. to date. As we head into the hottest time of the year, make sure your farm has a fire prevention plan and an evacuation strategy in place to keep both horses and people safe.

Check out the graphic for ten fire prevention measures to get you started on the right track to a safer facility. This list is not meant to be exhaustive and we invite you to contact your local fire department and your veterinarian for guidance on designing a prevention and response plan tailored to your specific situation.

Barn fires are the number one local emergency affecting agricultural facilities. They can cause horrific injuries and kill more horses than any other type of disaster, so being prepared is only in your best interest!

Horses can acclimate to hot and humid weather conditions; however, air temperature and relative humidity can affect your horse’s ability to cool themselves.

It is recommended to avoid (or use caution when) riding or exercising a horse when the combined air temperature (in Fahrenheit) and relative humidity (%) surpass 150. For example, if the temperature is predicted to be 92 F with 69% relative humidity, the combination of the two is 161.

When the air temperature + relative humidity is less than 130, horses are very effective at cooling themselves. Between 130 and 150, a horse’s ability to cool themselves is decreased. When the combination is greater than 150, a horse’s ability to cool themselves is greatly reduced, and if the combination is greater than 180, conditions could become fatal if the horse is stressed.

When treating a horse, you might notice me placing my fingers beneath its jawline and feeling around. I'm checking for tension around the hyoid apparatus that could be pulling it out of alignment and affecting surrounding structures. Why am I doing this? Knowing your horse's normal vital signs is VITAL —pun intended!— to detecting distress and a possible emergency! 🩺

Practice taking your horse's vitals often (T.P.R.: temperature, pulse, respiration rate) so you can get to know what's normal for your equine friends and recognize what is abnormal. If your horse seems a little "off" and his values are outside the normal range, a call to your equine veterinarian is definitely warranted!

The typical ranges for adult horses are as follows:
🌡️Temperature: 99.0-101.5°F
❤️Heart rate: 28-40 beats/minute
🫁Respiration rate: 12-16 breaths/minute

Keep in mid that very hot and humid conditions may cause small variations, so be sure to have a conversation with your horse doctor about what is acceptable and about how to properly assess your horse's vital signs.

Thank you to the AAEP Horse Owner Education Committee for providing this information!

Our clients and patients mean the world to us and we like to recognize how awesome they are. Caitlin has done a phenomenal job with her 21 year old mare Lula. She restarted her about a year ago, as she’d been sitting in a pasture for many years, and was determined to help her become a friendly, rideable mount.

When we first saw Lula for her annual appt. a year ago she was unruly and wouldn’t stand for an exam. Yesterday, when Lula pulled up lame we were able to thoroughly evaluate her while she stood quietly, clip her for an ultrasound without any issues , and x-ray her hind limb without her moving an inch. No sedation needed at all!

Caitlin put in the time necessary to help Lula learn how to be a model citizen. We want to recognize that hard work and thank her for helping Lula and making her safer for us too!

It is clear Lula trusts Caitlin and we are confident she will make a full recovery. Thank you Caitlin!

UPDATES GUIDELINES AVAILABLE 📢

The AAEP has issued revised Internal Parasite Control Guidelines to help minimize the risk of parasitic disease and maintain the effectiveness of current drugs for as long as possible by delaying further development of anthelmintic resistance.

The updated guidelines account for recent advances in knowledge concerning increased anthelmintic resistance and optimization of parasite control management practices. They also address common misconceptions and offer parasite control program recommendations for senior horses (over 15 years old), mature horses (between 5 and 15 years old), and young horses (under 5 years old).

Read more at: https://aaep.org/post/aaep-publishes-updated-internal-parasite-control-guidelines/

The guidelines were reviewed and updated by the AAEP Internal Parasite Control Guidelines Task Force, chaired by Dr. Nielsen and comprised of 10 AAEP members predominantly board certified in veterinary internal medicine, veterinary parasitology and/or veterinary microbiology. We thank them for their incredibly important work!

Andria and I would like to thank you for supporting our horse camping weekend recharge along the Pacific Crest Trail. We did a couple easy 10 mile days. Andria wore her lumbar brace so her back injury didn't get upset and that worked really well. Here's some of our pics of camp and destinations. Back in the office today and eager to serve you.
