Round

What does it mean to make your horse round?

Contrary to what many believe, round, when it pertains to the horse, is not in the neck but rather in the back. Sadly, the hyper fixation on having a particular head set is part of a larger problem which stems from the lack of understanding in what a properly moving horse looks like, as well as how horses use their body to help themselves balance and move when they lack the physical strength and training to be in self carriage. Any position, regardless of whether it is considered "healthy" and correct, if held consistently throughout the ride will create tension. Suppleness is brought by constant changes in posture throughout the training session, however these position can never be forced or held by the rider, only encouraged and guided.

Roundness itself refers to the back of the horse, who through correct training is able to carry himself with his hind as opposed to pulling himself along and "grabbing ground" with the forelegs. The measure of self carriage is by assessing the angle of the spine and the engagement of the abdominal muscles and hind end through high-level movements.

Get to know your instructor!

Hi my name is Olga Harris and I’m the new riding instructor for Rumple Ranch. I’m so excited to meet all the new families and get to know everybody.

I have been around horses for 14 years and been teaching beginners lessons for 4 years.

I ride both English and western. Mostly western. I have shown both English and western disciplines, including: western pleasure, western horsemanship, trail, halter, showmanship, English pleasure, English equitation, hunter under saddle, gaited, dressage, and so much more.

I have found my passion for barrel racing and have been barrel racing for 6 years. I have qualified for NBHA youth and Open worlds 6 consecutive years. In 2017 I earned Top 5 in the State at the State show. I won the 4D champion at the Josey clinic in 2016. I have buckles, ribbons and trophies and won money.

I interned out of state in 2019 after I graduated high school at two big dressage barns and learned about business, managing a barn, and riding lots of different breeds.

I have my own business (Platinum Performance Horses) that I started in 2020 and it has grown exponentially.

The photos below is my palomino gelding, Codyspepobar aka Boyfriend. He passed away earlier this year due to a HYPP attack at the age of 16.

I’m so excited to share my knowledge with all the new students and families.
