Max is as excited as it gets and wants to thank one of his fans, Kim Dowell for his soft and chewy milk bones.
Max had a peak out of today’s hiding place and saw his treats and ventured out enough to snag himself a chewy bone ….thank you Kim we sure appreciate you supporting Max while he fights his cancer diagnosis x🐾🐾xx

Max came into our rescue nearly a decade ago with many problems many of them were of a mental health nature.
It was quickly decided that Max wasn’t suitable for adoption and that he needed stability and understanding.
Loud noises especially would terrify Max and even with calming meditation and a thunder shirt Max would involuntarily self defecate .
Max is a very gentle soul in every way and it’s been our honor to love him as he learned to love and trust us.
Max would often be found hiding or sleeping under a blanket rather than on top of one and we allowed him to do this wherever he pleased so I got used to straightening my bed several times a day.
At the end of April this year we noticed a swelling in Max’s a**l gland area and took him to Doc Brandy Jones of Critter Connection in Chapmanville to have him checked out, Doc Brandy wanted Max to have a lump removed and sent off for a**lysis, sadly Max was found to have A**l gland Carcinoma and it had 50% metastasize. Max was given pain medication and antibiotics and we brought him home where we will spoil him for as long as his body allows him to be comfortable. Max has definitely started to look older with slightly sunken eyes now and slimmer but there ain’t no stopping him enjoying his ice cream once a week or the soft Chewy treats.
Cuddle you babies that little more and spoil them as they deserve.
Pictured is Max hiding away in my bed and then him enjoying his ice cream.
Cancer has no bounds and is an indiscriminate disease sadly.
Should anyone want to send Max some treats please do so and I will take photos of him enjoying them xx

Stepping Stones has once again used the WV AG Grant to help spay and neuter dogs and cats in 6 counties in 2023. Our final total is $13,577.00 and 150 cats and dogs fixed and rabies vaccines given. We are so happy we were able to apply our grant where it is most needed in rural areas. Dr Brandy Jones is a fantastic partner in our efforts to help the overpopulation problem in Southern WV. We take pride in being able to prevent unwanted litters and send healthy animals back to their homes.

It’s been a while since we have been able to post mostly due to health reasons within the group, however in the background we have been able to use our spay and neuter grant to the tune of nearly $14,000 to help owners within the state who cannot afford to get their pets fixed and in doing so have helped decrease the overwhelming amount of puppies and kittens born each year.

We have also been working with other rescue groups sending them puppies that we have rescued from under abandoned homes or from off of the mountains and sadly drop offs where the owners felt nothing about driving away and leaving the poor Mumma fending for her pups or the mother cat trying to keep her kittens safe.
This we have never stopped doing despite our own health issues.

This brings me to a horrific case we were asked to assist in by doctor Brandy Jones of Logan Animal Hospital a few months back.
I cannot post the videos of the dog’s injuries as they as extremely graphic, however I will post photos of what this little boys leg looked like the day he went into Logan Animal Hospital as a ‘supposed stray’.
Ludo went through so much in his young life- he is estimated to be between 1-2 years old . His injuries were so bad that it was thought he may not even make it through the night.
Ludo’s leg was so matted it was almost unrecognizable as being a leg even and when the vet staff eventually managed to cut away the matted fur they found hundreds of maggots .
At the time people were calling for Ludo to be put to sleep or his leg amputated however luckily the doctor thought differently and the leg was saved with Ludo having physiotherapy on the leg daily which he is still having done.
Ludo also had to have his left eye removed at the same time.
Well no one told little Ludo that he lost an eye or has to have physical therapy on his leg daily and he is a wonderful happy little chap who loves nothing more than a cuddle and some loving.
Ludo is great with other dogs and cats and is generally a little love ball.
Stepping Stones is currently looking for a foster home for Ludo and we will be looking for Ludo’s forever home where he can spend the rest of his life in the comfort of a loving safe home.

First photo is of the matted mess that was in fact Ludo’s leg it’s hard to actually see what it is to be honest.

Second photo shows the matted eyes
That had already had a lot of the matted hair cut away

The others are Ludo yesterday at Logan Animal Hospital’s office where he enjoys having time with the staff.

We will be taking applications for Ludo’s permanent home and will be looking or a quick gentle setting.
