Everything goes at a snails pace with Valor, but I don’t mind. I love seeing the tiny little improvements he makes everyday. Today we did some confidence building with the Cato board.
He started out being tucked up in the corner of the couch. He worked his way up to putting two feet on the board and taking treats from my hand. I learned very quickly that talking to him makes him nervous and causes him to retreat so I’ll be focusing on doing a lot of communication through body language and the leash!

Free shaping a retrieve with Olivia. Lesson 1
The goal of free shaping is to break a behavior down into micro steps! I’ve found that when dogs learn a behavior through free shaping, they tend to hold on to it well. It’s basically making the dog think it was their idea to do it!
I start by marking and rewarding and interest in the PVC pipe, even just looking at it. It didn’t take long for her to realize that she was rewarded for interacting with the pvc.
She quickly got bored (puppy brain) and so we ended on a good note when she started to pick up the pvc pipe on her own!
Free shaping requires an immense amount of time and patience. It’s not uncommon for dogs to get bored, especially when they are just staring to learn about free shaping.
This whole session for Olivia was about 6-7min.

The weather cooperated and we were finally able to do group class! We had a great turn out and everyone did fantastic learning the rally course. This wasn’t about everyone learning rally, but more to work on fine tuning details like staying in place, turns, finishing positions and more! So proud of everyone for putting in the work with their dogs!

An amazing public access training day for Roo! We spent time walking around the outlets and working in tight spaces in stores. She worked beautifully around @zs.epic_of_feist and even did her first restaurant outing!
She settled nicely under the table and even got to work on two of her tasks, behavior interruption and retrievals!

Free shaping a hold with Sloan. This is our second session working on this task. The first time, she just wanted to tug on the dumbbell, but today she figured out that I just want her to place her mouth on it without pulling.
The next session, I’ll want her to hold her mouth on it briefly before the reward. As time goes on, I will increase the amount of time she holds it, and start fading out my hands as a guide. This will ultimately turn into a retrieve, where she holds the item until I have her release it. This will also help in teaching her to carry things for me.
I’m loving how this girl is coming along!

Ellie made such amazing progress and change during her time here! Leash manners were a big goal for us because Ellie pulled her owner to the ground and she ended up with multiple broken bones!
