Dear loyal customer,

It is with a heavy heart that I announce my decision to close our dog food business effective March 1, with our last delivery being on February 22. Please have your final order to us by Monday, February 19.

This has been one of my proudest achievements and I am so grateful for all the support we have received from customers like you. My goal was to make the best dog food we could make, using locally sourced meats and produce and I think we accomplished that. I know many of your dogs benefitted from the food and loved it too – I loved seeing videos and pictures of some of your dogs who were pretty excited about their dinner!

There are several factors that have gone into this decision, including the fact that our costs have continued to rise, and I can only increase the price of our food so much. And, more importantly, I also need to spend more time with my family.

There are two dog food companies that I feel good about recommending to you if you are looking for an online option: The first is Open Farm – they use human grade ingredients and offer gently cooked meals that are shipped to you frozen. They are focused on sustainability and purchasing meat from humanely raised animals. The second is Badland’s Ranch out of Montana. Their food is air-dried and is packed with great nutrition and “superfoods”. They also source meat from farms that believe in the humane treatment of animals and blend their food in small batches. If you are interested in sourcing more local options, reach out to Pet in the City and they can help you find an alternative to For the Love of Dutch – and they deliver to your door.

For The Love of Dutch will continue to exist but will become a nutrition company as I am pursuing my other dream of becoming a Certified Pet Nutritionist and will be offering my services beginning in 2025, so stay tuned. I am also working with a company that might be interested in making For The Love of Dutch out of their human food kitchens. The recipes will remain the same and the ingredients will be from small farms, it will just be made by someone else on our behalf and shipped frozen. If or when this happens, I will be the first to let you know.

I will miss doing business with so many of you whom I have gotten to know, as well as many of your dogs who have greeted me at the door with enthusiastic barks and tail wags. It has been a privilege to serve you. I hope to work with you in the future if you ever need a Pet Nutritionist!
All the best to you and your fur children.

Much love,
Christi

How it all started

I have always loved animals, dogs especially. As soon as my husband and I felt that it was time, we got our first basset hound, Lucy. As of today, we have had three (Dutch was second and Daphne was next) and throughout each of their lives I have learned a great deal about caring for them, including paying close attention to what they eat. I decided years ago, when our second dog Dutch had what was going to be a chronic condition, to seek out the opinion of a holistic veterinarian. The first and most important change this veterinarian made was to our dogs’ diet. We went from a high quality dry food to an organic raw diet and eventually a homemade stew, and the changes we saw in our dogs’ health was astounding. Weight loss was first, and the “chronic" condition that Dutch had was gone for good.. This is when my interest in, and passion for feeding dogs a homemade diet began. A homemade and cooked diet is easier for dogs to digest, which is especially important as our dogs age. We lost Dutch when he was just shy of 16 years old and I credit his diet for his long and healthy life. This company is named after him, our sweet Dutch Henry.

As with humans, dogs really are ‘what they eat’. I prefer to use organic when possible so that the food in general is less taxing on the liver and kidneys. It is also important to switch up the ingredients from time to time to provide a more balanced overall diet. Dogs need some variety to maintain their overall health.

My primary goal is to offer For the Love of Dutch home made food to the dogs of Charlotte and beyond so that they, too, can benefit from fresh food and a homemade meal. I understand first hand how difficult it is to work a full time job and to cook for the human family members as well as to cook for the fur children. Let me do the cooking for you, at least for the canines in the home!

There is so much waste in our world, and so my other goal with this company is to reduce the amount of produce (veggies and fruit) that is simply thrown away because it doesn’t look “pretty” enough for the store shelves, and to purchase organ meat from local farms that is almost always discarded. Organ meats are more densely packed with just about every nutrient, including heavy doses of B vitamins such as: B1, B2, B6, folic acid and vitamin B12, as well as minerals such as iron, phosphorus, copper, magnesium and more.
