Time, rest, patience for dogs who have been displaced, relocated, even traumatized
3 days to settle in
3 weeks to learn routines
3 months to believe they are home
That's the general rule for dogs in new homes
If... the pup isn't flooded with new people, toys, touch, talk, walks, gear, drives stores, visits, strangers, visitors... and their sleep is prioritized. They will typically start having puppy dreams on the 4th day.
This morning Pinto is dreaming. He's been supported with a blanket over his crate (reduce stimulation) Google playing calming music for dogs.
Yesterday, I rearranged everyone to make room for a pregnant momma. I rearranged AROUND Pinto. Meaning his crate stayed in the same spot.
In 3 days, he has started to sleep, had zero accidents in the house and has caught o to calm gets the crate door open not pawing at the door.
He is eating well and Saturday he had a quick repeat of that auto sit (whike in the rate to keep clean lines) out of the crate he would need to navigate, jumping on me running around and and and... it's kinder of me to lower the distractions (the whole world) and build the behaviou/relationship
Thursday to Friday to Saturday to Sunday... 3 days Grace.
Monday we have puppy dreams right on target.
A body needs sleep, today I won't ask for much, I need his brain sober to learn crate/potty and auto sit.
Let him rest and reset...then build from there.
Give them time.
Make a list of noises, smells, talk, touch.. imagine it all being done to you by strangers. You'd stay freaked too.
Slow is fast with dog training!
