Don't Complain...Train! I know raising a puppy can seem daunting at times. Dogs repeat behaviors that are rewarding, and avoid behaviors that are not!

I can help make it less difficult and troubling, but instead MORE enlightening and rewarding! - Jill Beitel Owner/Certified Professional Dog Trainer Courteous Canine Philosophy
Courteous Canine employs positive, reward-based training methods. Our focus is to teach the pup the desired behavior in a given situation, and then reward generously, rather than to focus on correcting “wrong” behavior. By
learning how to manage reinforcements in your dog’s life, you help teach your dog to offer certain behaviors in pursuit of rewards and privileges. Your trained dog will be a pleasure to have around and will enjoy a stronger bond with your family. In-Home Training
Training takes place primarily in your home, at your convenience. This allows your dog (and you) to feel secure and calm in a familiar environment, and saves you time. Plus, it helps us address directly behaviors that are happening specifically in your home or with your family members. Starting Early—Puppy Training
Courteous Canine can give valuable advice on choosing the right breed for you and your family, preparing the home for pup’s arrival, and how/when to start socializing and training your new family member. Early education is best!! We believe in teaching appropriate behaviors at a very young age when possible, before inappropriate ones become habit. Make the most of puppyhood—use guidance and rewards to help your puppy make the right choices from day one! All Breeds, All Ages
So your adult dog is untrained and ill-mannered? There is hope! We can show you how to break the pattern of “bad” behavior, and positively shape your dog into the responsive, well-behaved pet he was meant to be. Both of you will be happier!

Yes! 👏🏼
Today's Dog Training Myth of the Day: "Only tell them once!"
What if you ask a dog (whatever age, breed, s*x, background, training level) to do something, but there is no response?
Set aside the myth of "only tell them once." Good rule of thumb: if it were a toddler, what would you do? Probably wait a few beats, be sure you had the kid's attention, then ask again.
Just like us, dogs may not be tuned in 100% because they are busy having their own experience of life which may or may not include you at any moment.
If you *do* have the pup's attention, and they did hear you, next step is to consider that they do not understand and/or don't see the point!
I've often asked clients to stand on a chair and sing happy birthday. I've done it while they were trying to take notes. Result: no compliance, and they say usually say, "Sorry - I was focused on taking notes. What did you say?"
If they are paying attention to me but look at me as if I'm crazy, I ask, "Did you understand what I asked? You did? So why aren't you doing it?" Inevitably the answer is, "I don't want to" or "Why would I do that?" It helped them understand how their dogs might be responding.
So give your dogs the courtesy of clear communication, engage attention first, be sure there is understanding, and make it worthwhile for the dog to work with you. Respect, courtesy and taking responsibility for what we are communicating and how we are communicating -- those are all supportive of healthy dog/human relationships.
This does not mean repeating, Sit-sit-sit-sit-sit-sit which is not good communication no matter who you're talking to! 😊
If you want and need response to just one request (and this has great value!), you first have to teach understanding, understand that connection and attention must come first always, then develop the skill, tighten the criteria and make it worthwhile. Then practice!!!
Welcome Luce!!
This sweet girl has some really big shoes to fill, but she’s also her own special self and her Mama is ready to raise and teach Miss Luce to be the best she can be!
STRONGLY recommend this wonderful Netflix series. Informative and all science-based, still super interesting and entertaining.
Embark on a delightful journey into the world of dogs in this documentary that reveals scientific and emotional insights about our lovable BFFs.
Daycare spots open for tomorrow! Mssg or email us for a spot 🐶
Class Flyer!! Join us!
Great week with Charlie! Plenty of focus on socialization and life skills, but also doing great on responding immediately to his name, coming when called even among distractions and in new places, keeping his feet on the floor rather than on people or gates, confidence and sociability with dogs and people, dropping things on cue, and more! Needless to say, as with all board and trains, owner will need to follow through to keep these skills and behaviors strong, and build on them! But he’s got a great foundation!

Yes. Life skills vs “obedience” for a fuller life 🙌🏼
For those asking for a registration form for OOTT Class--here you go!
AMEN. At least strive to understand the dog, and meet the need!
Happy exposure to life and the world around them—the priority for those first 12-14 weeks! And bonus – all those wonderful experiences day after day help tire out puppy mentally and physically, so there are far fewer typical undesirable puppy behaviors, like jumping, grabbing, biting, and inappropriate chewing
Who’s ready to add to their family? This girl sounds lovely
UPDATE: Pepper's adoption fell through due to no fault of her own so this sweetie is still available!
Everyone meet Pepper! Pepper is a female 2.5 yr old Poodle mix and weighs 15 lbs. She loves all dogs and people and is great on the leash. She loves her toys and playing fetch! Pepper also loves to be close to her human. She needs to work on her jumping a bit.. she responds to correction but this will need reinforcement.
Pepper requires a fenced yard as she has a prey drive. Pepper would do best with children over 6. A furry companion is preferred.
Pepper is potty trained and up-to-date on vaccines, spayed, and microchipped.
If you’re interested in making sweet Pepper part of your family, please contact [email protected] for an application today!
This lovely golden retriever puppy is with us for socialization, life skills, manners, and safety behaviors. Brief, frequent and fun sessions are key, with lots of reinforcement for desirable behaviors. In the beginning, it’s also important to manage the puppy and situation such that the undesirable behaviors are prevented so that they aren’t practiced over and over again (for example, tossing food at pup’s feet when first entering the room, or releasing puppy from the crate. Simple and effective way to get him out of the habit automatically jumping at these transitions.
Dogs communicate with behavior and body language. Please listen!
Chapel is mentally and physically tired—score!!😇 If you want a happy, relaxed, satisfied pup, challenge them in brief training sessions! They should be using their brain and body learning and practicing new tricks and skills—even if it looks like just a bunch of fun, these sessions reap a multitude of short and long-term benefits. Ideas: chase me, collar grabs, hand touch, high five, restrained recalls, hide & seek, auto-checkins—just for starters! Enjoy!
Monday daycare canceled due to weather; Wednesday as a possible rain date
Alfie says good morning!!
Likely daycare cancellation today, Friday 7/12. Rain is forecasted throughout the day. Will confirm soon.
More solid advice. Be open to alternatives to traditional treatments. “We’ve always done it this way” is not reason enough to continue questionable practices.
Yes!! Preach! Especially re: the BS “prescription diets”
Holiday fireworks are coming soon 🙁
Many dog owners know the struggle of comforting their furry friends through the loud bangs and bright flashes that July 4th brings each year. Dogs, with their sensitive hearing and instinctual fear of sudden loud noises, often find fireworks horribly disturbing and frightening. To help your canine companion cope, it's essential to plan ahead. Consider creating a safe space at home where your dog can retreat, using classical or easy reggae music and/or a sound machine, long-lasting treats or toys to distract them, pheromone sprays (like Adaptil), and lots of love and snuggles with you.
Is your dog severely affected by the sound of fireworks? Talk to your vet NOW about medication options to ease anxiety. Please don’t wait until the offices are closed and your dog is shaking in fear. By preparing in advance, you can ensure a calmer, more comfortable experience for your dog during fireworks displays. Remember too, that fireworks usually go on throughout the day and into the weekend.

These pups know how to have a good time, heat or no heat! Small group home-based daycare for the WIN!! #puppysocialization #tireddogsarehappydogs
Restrained recalls for the win! Puppies must have the opportunity to learn what those two words mean (Ozzie, come!), build a history of being reinforced for the behavior, and have opportunities to do it in multiple places before we can expect them to come when called when otherwise engaged, or distracted. That comes later! Build a foundation of success first!
Considering adding a dog to your family, but not on board with the huge time and training commitment a puppy requires? There are so many sweet and easy-going adult dogs out there who are already housetrained, cratetrained, and great with kids and dogs. This is one of them! Reji is sturdy and active, but also super cuddly. 15 pounds and four years young.
Besides the name game—teaching a fast happy response to their name in all situations— the restrained recall is our favorite first step to teaching a lifelong reliable recall 🙌🏼🐶👏🏼 Go baby Pepper!!
Restrained recalls every day for the win! Build up that training bank account with these fairly easy but wildly reinforcing recalls, which set puppy up for repeated success!
Wishing beautiful rescued Great Pyrenees mix Blue all the best as she undergoes treatment to kill heartworms. Hang in there, Blue! And bring on the chews and enrichment, Mom!
Meet Mabel, AKA Potato or Sweet Potato. Gotta love a guest dog who does not require constant entertainment or expensive toys 😂
Foundation work with puppy to create a reliable recall—teach a fast and happy response to his name, play the restrained recall game (videos on the website-do this exercise EVERY DAY!), and practice lots of quick calls while pup is interested in something else. When he snaps his head toward you, mark with a click or YES! and reward heavily!! Then-this is super important— SEND HIM BACK TO THE FUN. If you only call him to end his fun (sniffing, digging, playing) you will never achieve a fast and reliable recall. #forcefreedogtraining #comewhencalled
Congratulations, Sally and Joe on the adoption of our foster pup Patton! We are thrilled that we get to do the training as well. Bring on the learning and fun!
