HERE’S WHY IT IS SO IMPORTANT TO ADD FRESH “HUMAN FOOD” TO YOUR PET’S KIBBLE

Today, ninety-six percent of pet owners around the globe are feeding dry commercial pet foods. Of those 96%, there is a large majority that believes dried commercial pet food is really all their pet needs and would never stop to consider the benefits of adding fresh “human food”.

(“Human food” definition in this article: clean sources of meat-based proteins and some organic plant matter, not beer and nachos 😉)

There are many reasons why some of these pet parents feel this way, however the most popular reason today seems to be the 50-year-old rumor that is in existence and still spreading.

You know the one: “Giving your animal table scraps is bad!”

How or when did this terrible rumor start?

Well, if we go back in time, research shows that shortly after the invention of processed pet foods, manufacturers were having a hard time convincing pet parents to make the switch from foods in their refrigerators to their commercial pet foods.

So in 1964, the pet food industry, along with the PFI, joined together with a whole bunch of marketing dollars and launched one of the most influential campaigns the pet world had ever seen: the “Ban All Table Scraps from your Pets’ Bowls” campaign!

Through thousands of newspapers, magazines, and news stations, the public was warned about the dangers of table food scraps or “human food” and the importance of feeding “processed” commercial pet food. From there, the giant smear campaign took off!

Not only did this clever campaign work, but it was so impactful that now, 50 years later, folks are still in fear of offering anything that is not labeled pet food.

SO IS IT A GOOD THING TO ONLY OFFER YOUR PET DRIED KIBBLE?

Not according to ongoing research it isn’t, especially with today’s cancer rates being 1 in 2 dogs!

In a 2005 study conducted at Purdue University on Scottish Terriers, the results showed that adding fresh vegetables to dry commercial kibble actually prevented and/or slowed down the development of transitional cell carcinoma (aka bladder cancer)!

In the study, dogs ate a diet of dry commercial pet food, while some got an assortment of vegetables added to the mix at least 3 times per week.

When the study was concluded, according to the researchers, they weren’t really shocked by the results.

Here’s what they found:

Dogs that ate any green leafy vegetables, like broccoli, had reduced the risk of developing bladder cancer by 90% and the dogs that consumed any yellow – orange vegetables like carrots reduced the risk by 70%!

Seriously! A lousy carrot helped smash the potential of cancer.

( http://ilarjournal.oxfordjournals.org/content/55/1/100.full ) (Raghavan, Knapp, Bonney, 2005) http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/16013542/

Yes, of course cats are obligate carnivores (must have meat to survive) and our dogs are facultative carnivores (carnivores with omnivorous potential if circumstances demand) so offering clean meat-based protein sources should always be top priority and essential.

However, because today’s world is ever-so changing due to factory farmed livestock being fed genetically modified grains and our planet being contaminated with every type of pesticide, fungicide and larvicide, the importance of fresh, organic plant matter to help detox the body couldn’t be more crucial.

So if the “cancer reducing benefit” doesn’t tickle your fancy enough to convince you to add any “human fresh foods” to your pet’s bowl, then maybe think of it this way:

How bad would it suck if someone forced you to eat dry processed foods your whole lIfe?!

Puppy Mills – Leading Cause of Shelter Overpopulation Crisis

If puppy mills didn’t exist, there would be 75% fewer dogs in shelters and rescues.

Unfortunately, there is a lack of statistical data available surrounding the commercial dog breeding industry since much of it is unregulated, so most figures can only be estimated.

The annual estimated percentage of dogs in shelters/rescues which come from puppy mills, directly and indirectly, is broken down as follows:

• 6% – dogs purchased directly from pet stores who obtain their puppies from commercial breeders
• 11% – dogs purchased directly from online websites operated by commercial breeders
• 13% – dogs purchased directly from commercial breeders
• 2% – dogs removed from or relinquished by commercial breeders
• 17% – dogs which are the result of the irresponsible breeding of dogs purchased from pet stores
• 26% – dogs which are the result of the irresponsible breeding of dogs purchased from online websites operated by commercial breeders

On the above list, since the initial 24% of dogs originated from puppy mills were unaltered, there is the fair assumption that they contributed even more to the shelter intake statistics with unwanted backyard breeding, litters and strays.

The figure of 75% is derived from a combination of statistical data gathered from reputable and reliable sources, including The Humane Society of the United States, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, American Veterinary Medical Association, American Pet Products Association, Dog by Dog, The Puppy Mill Project, International Fund for Animal Welfare, and others.

So, how would removing the puppy mill source affect the overpopulation of dogs and reduce shelter admission statistics?

• Impulse purchasing of a puppy will be suppressed. It’s proven that impulse purchasing leads to shelter relinquishments.
• Animal welfare activists who previously fought puppy mills will target irresponsible backyard breeders.
• As the dog overpopulation is reduced there will be fewer unaltered dogs available for backyard breeding operations.
• Compassion and concern for abused and neglected dogs will increase substantially as the public learns and understands the suffering that man’s best friend has endured.
• Currently, more than 1 billion dollars are spent annually collecting, destroying and disposing of unwanted dogs in shelters. Can you imagine if that money could be focused on spay/neuter programs?
• The public will become more aware and educated than ever before about responsible vs. irresponsible breeding. They will be more thoughtful, using planned decision-making when adding a dog to their family. They will demand and expect quality, healthy, humanely-bred puppies.

It’s not possible to fully substantiate the figure of 75% because of the inability to obtain exact figures, but using reliable statistics and detailed calculations, it’s an indisputable fact that puppy mills are the leading cause of the dog overpopulation crisis in the U.S. today.

Setting all figures aside, the ultimate issue is, truly, the overpopulation of dogs. If every dog was loved and wanted, 75% would actually be a rather conservative figure.

According to the ASPCA, approximately 3.3 million dogs enter U.S. shelters ever year. Of those, approximately 670,000 dogs are euthanized. Is there a pet overpopulation crisis? We believe the numbers speak for themselves and that puppy mills are the leading cause of this crisis.

TREATS FROM YOUR FRIDGE FOR SENSITIVE DOGS!

What’s the best training treats for dogs with GI issues, including diarrhea, colitis, ulcers and sensitive stomachs? Unripe, or green bananas!🍌

Green bananas🍌 are the unsung heroes of gut health; they are low in sugar and high in pectin and prebiotics (non-digestible, resistant starch) which are powerful food tools to nourish your dog’s good gut bacteria💥🦠, increasing the production of butyrate and other short-chain fatty acids. Research also shows the resistant starch in green bananas can have a positive effect on blood sugar control.

The anti-ulcer activity of green bananas has been attributed to a flavonoid, leucocyanidin, which may also inhibit the release of histamine in the gut. Resistant starch also contributes to the prevention of intestinal diseases, increases the synthesis of B-complex vitamins and mineral absorption, improves the immune response, and may aid in the prevention of the development of intestinal cancer, according to researchers.

Quartering green banana slices🍌 provides the perfect training treat for dogs with sensitive GI tracts. Suggested amounts, chopped into bite sized pieces:
Giant breeds: 1 green banana a day
Medium to large breeds: ½ green banana a day
Small breeds: ¼ green banana a day

One fact all of the microbiologists agreed on, when we wrote The Forever Dog book, was that the more fresh food fibers added to your dog’s bowl, the healthier your dog will be. Green bananas are a simple, easy way to build gut health! 🐾

Longevity researchers are clear: a diverse microbiome is critical for maximal health span, the longest-lived mammals have a microbially-diverse gut, created by consuming a variety of gut-building foods. If you want to learn more about certain longevity foods and treats from your fridge that should be rotated into your dog’s diet plan and how much to feed to strengthen your dog’s immune system, our new book called The Forever Dog is packed with surprising new science that will help your dog live healthier, happier, and longer. WANT TO HELP YOUR DOG LIVE LONGER? TRY THIS!🍵🐶

When designing our blueprint📝 on how-to raise the oldest dogs in the world for our new book, The Forever Dog, we focused our research heavily on science-based longevity foods, herbs & supplements that can be added to your dog’s diet. Foods that could not only help delay canine aging, but can help nourish and bullet-proof💥 your dog against disease!

No matter which longevity scientist we interviewed, the one suggestion that made every researcher’s top 10 list of what to add to a dog’s bowl was “camellia sinensis,” aka Green Tea!🍃

In fact, the latest study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology shows people who drink green tea at least three times a week can live longer and suffer a lower risk of cardiovascular disease!

That’s because Green Tea is rich in polyphenols, and contains a catechin called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) which are found to help prevent cell damage, reduce inflammation and can help fight cancer while providing other health benefits, of course.

But what about dogs? Are there any studies? Shockingly, we found a bunch!
The most recent showed that Green Tea🍵 acts as a therapeutic agent for obesity, liver inflammation, and fat degeneration in dogs!

While many of us make juices or smoothies, most of us don’t think about using concentrated medicinal infusions in our food. But in the dog world, medicinal teas make inexpensive, polyphenol-rich toppers (“gravies”) that infuse longevity benefits into every meal. So, it should come as no surprise that green tea has been used in pet food for quite some time, but not in quantities to confer health benefits, so why not add some at home?

All teas can be steeped as usual, then cooled off prior to adding to your dog’s food. Green teas should be decaffeinated, and preferably organic.

Alternatively, add warm tea to your dog’s dry food and allow the therapeutic brew to marinate with the kibble prior to feeding, creating a super-saucy gravy and adding hydration (dogs aren’t designed to eat low-moisture, dried food their whole lives; teas help!). If you feed dehydrated or freeze-dried dog food, reconstitute them prior to feeding with tea!

Recipe for Organic Decaf Green Tea🍵 for Pets🐾:

1.Combine 3 cups of purified water and 1 tea bag or 1 tablespoon of loose tea leaves🫖
2.Steep for 15 minutes
3.Remove the tea bag or use a strainer to remove the tea leaves🍃
4.Store the tea in a covered, preferably glass pitcher in the fridge for up to 3 days

Add the following amounts of decaf green tea to your pet’s morning and evening meal:

• Cats — 1 tablespoon
• Small dogs — 1/8th cup
• Medium dogs — ¼ to ½ cup
• Large dogs — ½ to 1 cup

This is one simple and powerful way to add longevity benefits to your dog’s bowl! Looking for more ideas or recipes? Check out our new book with dozens of other suggestions in the Forever Fluids section of our book, available for pre-order now by clicking here: www.foreverdog.com/book
