How often are we maxing out negative reinforcement and negative punishment in our training with strong dogs? As a mentor of mine stated, “You can bully weak dogs into giving up their stuff. You cannot bully a strong dog.” That’s a fact!

I have observed trainers is this industry max out strong dogs’ thresholds until there was no place else to go. They’ve tried the choke chain, the prong collar, the stim collar, the choking out, etc, and the dog won’t out. Do you know why? Because he’s a strong dog, and all that did was max out his possession drive. There’s no more trust. Now every time you go to do a training scenerio, you’re gearing up with all your “tools” to make sure this dog outs on command. What a hassle! That dog doesn’t trust you.

You can force the release and give it back a million times but every time you force it, it’s basically canceling out the “trust” you’re supposedly building by giving the payment back. It KNOWS you’re eventually going to force it again. You see this in dogs that shut down, eyes glazed, disassociated from their bodies and environment, holding the sleeve or toy reward with a death grip.

So what do I do if my dog won’t out and I’ve exhausted all the methods I know without crossing the line into severely abusive measures?

You have to reset the trust. It’s going to take time and a lot of patience. But it can be done. Yes, I believe in balanced training, utilizing positive AND negative reinforcement CORRECTLY. And I also believe in reading the individual dog, learning what works for it and what doesn’t. Not all dogs are the same. There’s not a cookie cutter method for all working dogs.

Sadly, this industry seems dominated by mass production and the almighty dollar. As much as I would like to see my own business reach 9 figures, I won’t sacrifice any dogs for that goal. I couldn’t be here without them. So, yeah, I’ll find the time to invest so that each dog can trust me, can trust their handlers, can trust their owners. We trust THEM to protect US, and it’s a two way street.

*Currently working with another trainer to complete a step by step method which rebuilds the necessary trust and creates a clean and instant out without a fight. Will post once it’s complete.

“Just wanted to give a little update on our Ringo man since he'll be 1 in just a few short weeks. As of today Ringo is 72 pounds , and fetching a ball is his favorite thing to do. He is a Mamas boy and anywhere she goes he goes , whether it's to supervise her planting flowers in the garden or to es**rt her around Lowe's cause you can never be to careful. He's the perfect mix of fun constant energy, and taking a long nap on the couch after a long day of being a stay at home dog. He's the most loving dog in the world but knows how to go into protective mode if he ever hears something that just doesn't sound right around the house. Ringo has been a great addition to our family and can't wait to spend many more birthdays with our big man. We love Ringo so much we've considered getting a female Belgian and promised each other we'd stop after the fourth dog.”

🍌 1 Ripe Banana
🥜 1/2 cup Peanut Butter
🥛 1 cup Plain Natural Yogurt
🍯 1 teaspoon Honey

📝Instructions:

1️⃣ Heat the peanut butter up in the microwave or on a stove until it is easy to stir. 🔥
2️⃣ Mash the ripe banana in a bowl. 🍌
3️⃣ Mix in the plain yogurt. 🥛
