I came across this wonderful write up by Robin MacFarlane, which highlights an important aspect of dog training: the role of stress. While we often aim to make training as positive and enjoyable as possible, some degree of stress is not only natural but essential for growth. Just like in humans, manageable stress during the training process helps build resilience in our dogs, allowing them to adapt to new environments and challenges more effectively. This, in turn, leads to greater confidence and a stronger ability to handle real life situations calmly and successfully.

How do you feel about exposing your dog to stress?

This young Weimaraner started a board and train recently. During the drop off, I informed his owner, he'd be living under some different rules at my house than what he'd been used to for the past few months of his life.

He would be subjected to some "healthy stress.”

Among other things, he would be sleeping in a crate at night, learning to walk nicely on a leash, and participate in proprioceptive exercises to build body awareness.

Essentially, he would be learning some problem solving skills and because of it, develop greater resilience.

The first day here he found himself stuck on the opposite side of a pole than the side I was on.

Can you guess what I did?

I did nothing. I stood there, not moving, not applying more pressure to the leash, not coochie-cooing him...I just waited.

It took him about 90 seconds of wiggling, and whining to figure out what to do to get himself free.

Once he did, he was darn proud of himself, prancing about for a few seconds and then we moved on and enjoyed a short game of fetch.

The stress was short lived. He learned how to relieve it and was proud of himself as he discovered his power to problem solve.

We do our dogs no favor by immediately bailing them out of every little problem or struggle they encounter.

So often I hear, "My dog doesn't like the crate,” or "My dog doesn't like to be brushed,” or "My dog won't potty while on leash.”

As a woman who has raised two (now grown) children, I could not have imagined saying to my kids dentist..."well, they don't like having their teeth brushed so we just gave up." 🤣

I have news for you, there are very few dogs that immediately enjoy their crate, or being brushed and bathed, or being restrained on a leash.

It's our job to teach them to tolerate the realities of life in the human world.

For most things the teaching recipe is simple:

A bit of skill, applied over time, mixed by a healthy dose of patient persistence.

If you don't have the skill, the time or the patience, you can pay people like me to do the foundation work for you. It is like having the dentist clean the kids teeth...but if you don't maintain what the professional did, it's not going to become good habits that serve for a lifetime.

The main thing to understand is that stress and learning will be part of life. There is no avoiding it. It is how we learn to work through it that makes the difference.

By taking time to teach your dog how to tolerate some stress and learn to problem solve, you set them up for increased confidence, improved manners and an overall healthier mindset.

Today, we pause to remember the tragic events of September 11, 2001, a day that forever changed our nation. Among the heroes who responded with unwavering bravery were the incredible search and rescue dogs. These loyal, dedicated companions played a critical role in locating survivors and bringing comfort to those in need.

Nearly 300 dogs worked tirelessly alongside their handlers in the aftermath of the attacks, navigating the debris at Ground Zero. Their courage and determination saved lives, and they stood as a beacon of hope during such a dark time. From sniffing out survivors to offering emotional support, these dogs showcased the remarkable bond between humans and their canine partners.

As we reflect on this day, we honor the memory of those who were lost and the four legged heroes who served so selflessly. Let us never forget the strength, resilience, and unity we witnessed in the face of tragedy. Today, we stand together, remembering all the lives touched by that day, both human and canine.

Good afternoon, everyone!

We wanted to provide you with a quick update, even though there isn’t much of an update to give. Although we are ready and eager to open our doors, we are currently waiting on some final approvals. Specifically, we are awaiting information from Animal Control to proceed with our kennel license. Despite being told that we should have received information a month ago, we are still in limbo without any updates or timeline from them.

We deeply appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate this process. The kennel license is the final piece we need in order to move forward with accepting clients. We are committed to keeping you informed every step of the way.

Thank you once again for your continued support. As soon as we have any news, we will let you know immediately!

Let’s talk about regression in training for a moment. Regression is a natural part of any training journey, especially when consistency and practice are disrupted. Due to the winter and Kino undergoing heartworm treatment, our vet advised keeping him at home to avoid activities that could elevate his heart rate. This meant we couldn't get him out in public as we used to.

Now that Kino's restrictions are lifted, we've been reintroducing him to public outings. He's regressed a bit, which is completely normal. He's experiencing some stress, but it's good stress that builds resilience. “But Traci, how can stress be good?!?” Because it helps him adapt and grow. The more we get out and practice, the more reps we get in, the easier it will become for him to handle different environments.

For your dog to enjoy public outings, consistency and practice are key. Be diligent about taking your dog out, holding them accountable, but also making the experience enjoyable!

Having a solid communication system and rewarding your dog for desired behaviors is crucial as well. If your trainer doesn't believe in using rewards like food, toys, or affection (or whatever your dog finds reinforcing.. key words here are what YOUR DOG finds reinforcing) it's time to find a new one. While dog’s do need rules, boundaries, and structure, the goal is for your dog to want to work WITH you, not just FOR you. It's all about building a strong partnership together.

Kino had a busy day today! We took him to the vet for his rabies shot update and then made a stop at Home Depot. Since getting off exercise restrictions, he’s been full of energy and eager to get out and about again!

Public exposure is a key part of our training program for those looking to take their dogs to fun, dog friendly places. While shopping, we practiced down stays with Kino, ensuring he remained calm and focused as people passed by and while we checked out. It's always exciting to see our training in action and watch our dogs excel in real world environments!

Many people are surprised to learn that their chosen breed is a herding or stock dog. For example, it's common for people not to realize that German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois aren't just for police or military work, they're also used to herd and protect livestock. Understanding the characteristics, personality traits, and physical needs of the breed you're interested in is essential! 😁

We get many calls from people needing to "get rid" of their Austrailan Shepherds, Border Collies, other herding breeds because they are biting/nipping adults and childrens legs and ankles. They think they are aggressive. No. They are not being aggressive. This is exactly how they herd! Please research the breed you are getting to understand different qualities and quirks of the breed. Do not blame the dog for doing what may be a natural behavior for them. Talk to a trainer. Better yet, research the breed and know what you are getting before you get it!

Absolutely had to share this fantastic message from Grunt Style Canine Training! I worked for/with Josh in Alabama and his insights helped to transform my approach in training. From the way we interact with client dogs, to the way that we interact with our own personal dogs. Have fun; use their excitement and energy to enhance your training sessions and deepen your bond even further!

The Swearer pups are enjoying the yard on this beautiful Northern Michigan day! Kino will be 8 weeks post his last heartworm injection tomorrow, so we can finally start easing him off exercise restrictions and getting back to some normalcy. We were thrilled to get him out of the house and take him to Bière de Mac Brew Works in Mackinaw City yesterday! Public exposure is a huge part of the work we do, and we cherish our field trips and outings!

Meanwhile, Piper and I have been diligently working on her PT following her surgery, and she’s been getting around amazingly!

Hope everyone has a wonderful start to the week! 🐾☀️

I took part in Michael’s Behavior Modification and Management course back in late 2020 and let me tell you, it met and even exceeded my expectations! Every class, course, or webinar I’ve taken with him has been in-depth and jam packed with information. This course will now be available on his membership subscription; among many others!

Great news to share with everyone! We’re making fantastic progress on getting everything ready for our opening. On May 22nd, we received the variance waiver we needed, and as of yesterday, our special use permit was approved! Next, we’ll be testing our well and septic systems and obtaining our commercial kennel license from animal control.

We truly appreciate your patience as we navigate these final steps. We can’t wait to work with all of you!! 😁

05/05/2024

Good morning, everyone!! We've missed updating you all, but we've been quite busy behind the scenes. In January, we faced some unexpected challenges when both of our beloved dogs needed medical attention. Taking care of them became our top priority, with Piper undergoing TPLO surgery in February and Kino still undergoing heartworm treatment.

Now, as life gradually returns to normal, we're refocusing our energy on our business goals. We have some important meetings lined up with zoning and planning authorities to pave the way for our future endeavors. Once we've cleared these hurdles, we'll be working closely with animal control to secure the commercial kennel license we need.

A massive thank you to everyone for your patience and understanding during this time of transition. 2024 has certainly thrown us a curveball, but we're eager to dive back into work, serve our community, welcome new furry friends into the fold! Stay tuned for more updates!! 😁
