Koselig Rabbitry Breeding Rabbits

07/02/2023

It’s is with a sad heart I am announcing that the Rabbitry is now closed. There were a variety of factors in making this decision, but the biggest one was time. I just didn’t feel like I was giving the rabbits the care that they needed and going into summer that was a huge weight and worry. We did decide to keep Olaf (the black one) as a pet. Maybe someday we will explore rabbits again. 😢

Let talk about Bunnies!

I’ve seen a lot of posts around about “Don’t buy a bunny for Easter”, but here is the thing. Most breeders will have more kits this time of year than any other because well... it’s spring. So go ahead and get a rabbit if you want one IF you have done your research.

🐇 Rabbits need a special diet and a lot of things can kill them that you might not even think twice about. Over feeding or not having enough water can cause bloat. Sudden diet changes can cause bloat. Corn and other plants that aren’t easily digested can cause… you guessed it bloat. Be prepared to learn what you can and cannot feed them.

🐇 Rabbits can be kept in the house, but the p**p A LOT be prepared to clean cages regularly (like every day). And not all of them do well at litter training.

🐇 Know your breeds! There are dwarf breeds and large breeds. Know what you are getting your you may end up with a rabbit as large as your cat (mine are 10-12 lbs)

🐇 Rabbits will chew on just about anything because their teeth constantly grow and need to be worn down. Be prepared to manage this for indoor house rabbits and be prepared to give safe chewing alternatives so their teeth are cared for.

🐇 Rabbits are considered exotics at the vet. Be prepared to pay accordingly, but know that a lot of the time once they get sick/injured they don’t recover.

🐇 Rabbits can be hormonal jerks! If you do not spay/neuter your pet rabbit they can be jerks. Males are generally have better temperaments then females.

🐇 heat can kill. Rabbits are very sensitive to heat (they are wearing a fur coat). It is absolutely acceptable to keep rabbits outside, but they should be under cover and out of the wind. During the summer they need to be in deep shade (even a few minutes in direct sun at the height of summer can kill). Solar powered fans are available and work well for outside rabbits.

If you have gotten this far and still want a rabbit GREAT!

🥕They can be sweet smart little companions.

🥕Their p**p is a cold compost and can be put right in the garden (we sell p**p by the bucket if you want!).

🥕 You can eat them and raise them as livestock with many benefits.

🥕 You can clicker train them (and chickens!)

Day 3 and it was warmer this morning so I took everyone totally out of the nest for a full health check. I look everyone over for ”nest box eye”, runny noses and anything else that looks concerning. Inge is the Mama of these guys and it looks like she’s doing a great job feeding them. The little tan one is “lilac” colored, the broken patterned (spotted) looks like it will be black and white. the black ones will either be all black or black with gold tips. We won’t know for sure until their fur comes in around days 5-10.

Looks like Olaf might have mites. So we’re doing a quick treatment to make him feel better ❤️‍🩹 it’s always important to look your animals over at least once a day and make sure everyone is ok.

These ladies are spending their last day together… because we have some new KW cages coming (I’ve been waiting since JUNE!).

Tove and Inge are both New Zealand rabbits. They are actually named after our aunts 😅. Their coloring is called ruby eyed white or REW. They are the foundation females for our herd of rabbits and with any luck we should be seeing some kits in September! 🐇🐇

It’s HOT here today. Rabbits do not do well in the heat so we like to give them a little help. Today they have Ice balls and zucchini popsicles grown from our garden. The broken patterned (spotted) buck Søren likes to play a little game with his ice.

Working on getting everyone used to being picked up. This little guy is Olaf he’s my snuggly one. We were supposed to get a white New Zealand buck so it would have been snowman colored and Grayson wanted to call it Olaf. Well he isn’t white, but he’s still Olaf ☃️🖤
