Is it with very heavy hearts that we announce an unexpectedly passing of one of our retired four-legged heroes yesterday, K9 Boru, who was only 10yrs old. K9 Boru was a dual purpose K9 for our city, who had retired last year after four years of service. Thoughts and prayers go out to the Duncan family as they deal during this difficult time.
Below is from K9 Boru’s family…
RIP K9 Boru Duncan
7/1/2012 – 4/10/2022
Jim and I are heartbroken to report the sudden and unexpected passing of K9 Boru on Sunday April 10, 2022. K9 Boru was K9 Officer Jim Duncan’s beloved and loyal partner until 2021 when Boru retired and we adopted him. K9 Boru was imported from Holland at the age of 3.5 in 2016. He was trained extensively in 2016 and certified in both Patrol and Narcotics. He was working the streets of Chesapeake from 2017 until 2021. He made a significant impact on keeping the citizens of Chesapeake safe. He and Officer Duncan had an uncanny and unbreakable bond as they worked many long days and longer nights. This extreme athlete K9 lived to assist and protect his partner and the citizens of Chesapeake. Here is some of what K9 Boru accomplished in 4 short years:
543 Felony Arrests
Narcotic Arrests - 180
30 Illegal Fi****ms confiscated
28 Apprehensions
230 Misdemeanor Arrests
56 patrol Searches
307 Narcotic Searches
Seizures
Ma*****na - 1726 gms
Co***ne - 989 gms
Methamphetamine - 218 gms
He**in - 110 gms
Ecstasy - 2034 gms
U.S. Currency $14,000
Please keep this in mind… Once a K9 retires, the Police Department no longer assists with their care including medical bills and food, etc. . This should change. However, there are non profits that are trying to help.
A Police K9 is a very dangerous and physically demanding job. Often they sustain injuries while working, sometimes in apprehending violent criminals. When a K9 retires, the handler typically adopts him; all medical costs and food and upkeep immediately become the responsibility of the handler. This can add up significantly. It is at this time that health issues from the demands of the job often set in
In honor of K9 Boru and all other working dogs there are ways that you can help… consider donating to the nonprofit Friends for Chesapeake K9 which was formed for this purpose.

Another superb working dog charity that we also fully support is Spike's K9 Fund, the non profit that provided all the ballistic vests for the Chesapeake K9’s as well as for K9’s all over the country. Spike’s also conducts schools to better train Officers and their working partners, provides medical resources to countless working dogs and much more.
Thanks for the support and appreciation of law enforcement.
It has been a honor to be connected to the Chesapeake Police Department as a spouse under the exceptional leadership of Chief of Police Kelvin Wright.
This is a sad day for us but we are grateful to have had such a superb K9 in Boru who has served the city of Chesapeake so valiantly.
Thank you and God Bless.
A very special thank you to Chris McQn for capturing the love of this human and his partner.
