⚠️ Important Client Update ⚠️

As some of you know I have been dealing with some ongoing medical concerns the last 10 months or so. This past Sunday/Monday overnight I had a cardiac event and was transported by ambulance to the hospital. While scary, I am okay, just exhausted/sore (I think I slept for 4 days straight afterwards). Thankfully this has not had any significant impact to my scheduled appointments but, due to the events of the last week and also being in the process of moving, my brain is certainly a wee bit scrambled…. I am putting this post up to bring attention to any clients who may have an outstanding scheduling query or inbound message I may have overlooked.

At this time I have already resumed teaching private sessions/group classes and do currently have availability for booking going into September for current and future clients. I am very much looking forward to seeing all of you and your beloved canine companions again soon!

Lastly, I’d like to take a moment to recognize a certain little red dog who kept me calm during the most critical moments while waiting for emergency services to arrive. In the last week he has kept an extra close eye on me to alert me to any concerning changes in my BP/HR, been an absolute rockstar accompanying me to appointments, and his presence alone has offered me the invaluable gift of having peace of mind at night so I feel safe going to sleep. I am once again reminded how truly lucky we are to have dogs in our lives and I am forever grateful to have such a special dog in my life when I need/needed him most. 🖤

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? 💭

🐶 An ESA (Emotional Support Animal) is prescribed to a patient by a mental health practitioner and requires a formatted letter (some places will accept a letter from a general practitioner). They can be any species of animal. This letter must be on their letterhead, including their license information, state you are a patient under their care and have one or more mental illnesses that significantly impact your daily life and they prescribe an ESA to you. ESA’s require no formal training and there is no certification (if you see websites offering to certify your dog, those websites are a scam). They are allowed to live in housing where animals are not allowed and are exempt from pet fees, as long as the landlord owns more than four properties. They may fly on an airplane as long as they fall under the airlines regulations. ESA’s are still pets, and are not granted public access to places where pets are not allowed. This means your ESA can not go into stores such as Wal-Mart or restaurants. If the establishment has a “No Pet” policy, your ESA is not allowed to accompany you.

🐶A Therapy Dog (or horse) is a dog that has gone through training to provide comfort to many people such as at hospitals or nursing homes, they are still considered pets and do not have any public access rights or accommodations. This is a dog who accompanies their handler as a volunteer to bring comfort to many people. Therapy Dogs go through extensive training and testing and are certified through an organization. Organizations like Therapy Dog International and Pet Partners are two of the most popular. If an establishment has a “No Pet” policy, your therapy dog cannot accompany you.

🐶Service Animals (may legally be a dog or horse) are dogs that have been specifically task trained to assist their owner with a disability such as guide dogs, seizure alert dogs, or diabetic alert dogs. They are considered medical equipment and assist their disabled handler by performing tasks like alerting to oncoming medical episodes, retrieving items, helping their handler stand/walk, and even using a phone to call emergency services. There is no registration or certification for Service Dogs, any website offering to register your dog as a service animal is a scam. Service Dogs are covered by the ADA and may accompany their owner in public anywhere the public is allowed to go such as in restaurants, stores, hotels, and on airplanes. They are exempt from housing regulations as they are considered medical equipment, not pets. Service Dogs are highly trained dogs and should have exemplary training. Service dogs when in public spaces will not jump on people, seek attention, bark at other dogs or people, show any signs of aggression, pull on their leash, or beg for food at a table. Their job is to keep their handler safe and assist them with the tasks they are trained for. While the ADA does allow for handler trained dogs, a novice team should train under the guidance of a professional.

♦️There are only two questions an establishment can legally ask a service dog handler “(1) is the dog a service animal required because of a disability? and (2) what work or task has the dog been trained to perform?” That’s it. A Service dog is not required to wear a vest while working, though most do. They are easily identified by their behavior when working in a public spaces.

⚠️If you see a service dog working, please remember they are medical equipment. Disturbing a service dog can put their handler in a life threatening situation if they miss an alert. Please do not talk to, approach, reach out to pet, or otherwise distract a service dog for any reason. Please do not take photos of service dog teams without their consent. If you see a service dog handler team sitting or laying on the floor, it is okay to ask if they need assistance (if the handler declines assistance please respect the team and their privacy). Please do not disturb or attempt to separate a service dog from their handler, even if the handler appears to be experiencing a medical episode (the service animal may be trained to keep their handler safe during this time, interfering with their job can put the handler at risk of further injury). If an unaccompanied service dog is approaching you in a store, please DO follow them, they are likely trying to find assistance for their handler who is having a medical emergency.⚠️

⚠️WATER SAFETY TIPS⚠️
🦠Blue-Green Algae/Cyanobacteria 🦠

As the water temperatures rise during the summer months, the risk of Cyanobacteria Toxicosis also increases. Despite its nickname Blue-Green Algae, cyanobacteria can appear blue-green or a reddish-brown color. It often looks like paint that has been poured into the water, but can also appear as more defined blooms, mats, or foam on the surface of the water. Swimming in or ingesting water containing this bacteria is incredibly dangerous for our pets (and humans too). The two most dangerous types of this bacteria are microcystin and anatoxin, which affect the nervous system and the liver.

Symptoms may appear immediately or may take several hours to show up.

Clinical Signs:
▪️Vomiting
▪️Diarrhea
▪️Weakness
▪️Pale gums
▪️Collapse
▪️Drooling
▪️Muscle tremors
▪️Difficulty breathing
▪️Muscle rigidity
▪️Paralysis
▪️Seizures
▪️Sudden death

Safety Tips:
Avoid water that has visible algae blooms, scum, foam on the surface or that has an odor (plant rotting). Remove any stagnant water in items such as plant containers/bird baths etc Check local advisories for any warnings.

If you think your dog may have come in contact with contaminated water rinse them with fresh water and bring them to a veterinary hospital immediately.

IMPORTANT NOTE: There is no way to determine visually if a particular algae is toxic or non-toxic. If you see any signs of algae bloom in the water please do alert your local public health authorities or state health department agency.

Welcome to our new followers! In the last year I have had to take some time away for personal/health reasons and so as I re-establish my role in the dog community I thought it was time to "re-introduce" myself. I am so excited to be able to get back to doing what I am most passionate about in life and I cannot wait to meet you and your dog soon!

◾️About The Trainer◾️

Seren has been working with a variety of species including horses, dogs, cats and rats, over the past seventeen years. Seren specializes in Behavior Modification [Reactivity-Aggression-Fear) & Service Dog Public Access & Task Training. Seren offers both in-person and virtual services as well as occasional workshops/group class programs. While behavior cases make up the bulk of her case load, Seren also enjoys working with individuals who are training their companion to also be a working Service Animal (following ADA Guidelines). As someone who lives with chronic illness and injury herself as well as being neurodivergent, Seren understands firsthand how life-changing the independence that a service animal offers can be for individuals living with a disability. Seren is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer – Knowledge Assessed, through the Certification Council of Professional Dog Trainers. She has also successfully completed the Fear Free Animal Trainer Certification Program and is recognized as a Fear Free Professional. Seren is also a Professional Member of the APDT (Association of Professional Dog Trainers), a Professional Member of the Pet Professionals Guild, a supporting member of the IAABC (International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants), a Certified Trick Dog Instructor, Certified Stunt Dog Judge, Certified Canine Fitness Coach and an Official American Kennel Club Evaluator. She continues to regularly attend online classes, seminars, and workshops, to stay up to date and informed with the most current and scientifically based training and tools.

Seren also trains in/competes in and has titled dogs in various sports including agility, nosework, trick dog, stunt dog, rally, and obedience. In March of 2018 Seren and her dog “Brembo The Wonderpup” traveled to Purina Farms in Missouri to attend the first ever National Stunt Dog Championship where they earned five titles in one weekend, and became the first team from NH (and Brembo the first of his breed) to obtain a Stunt Dog Champion Title. In 2021 Seren and Brembo joined up with the team at McGovern Subaru for their “Subaru Service Dog” commercial series. The commercials starring Brembo have been featured on tv networks including CNN/HGTV/Food Network/MTV/Comedy Central, as well as YouTube and other social media platforms. Seren is an avid automotive enthusiast and has previously served as a board member for the Sports Car Club of New Hampshire. Seren regularly volunteers hours towards assisting with Wildlife Rehabilitation and working with shelter animals to help them on their journey towards adoption. In her free time you can find Seren racing, hiking, kayaking, or biking (usually with at least one dog in tow).

◾️Training Philosophy & Methodology◾️

“TRAINING is everything, and EVERYTHING is training.” – Seren Maxwell CPDT-KA

This version of the rainbow bridge story is not the one you're probably used to, but it is by far my absolute favorite. See you all on the other side someday…. 🐾

The Rescuer at Rainbow Bridge

Unlike most days at the Rainbow Bridge, this day dawned cold and gray. All the recent arrivals at the Bridge did not know what to think, as they had never seen such a day. But the animals who had been waiting longer for their beloved people to accompany them across the Bridge knew what was happening, and they began to gather at the pathway leading to the Bridge.

Soon an elderly dog came into view, head hung low and tail dragging. He approached slowly, and though he showed no sign of injury or illness, he was in great emotional pain. Unlike the animals gathered along the pathway, he had not been restored to youth and vigor upon arriving at the Bridge. He felt out of place, and wanted only to cross over and find happiness.

But as he approached the Bridge, his way was barred by an angel, who apologized and explained that the tired and broken-spirited old dog could not cross over. Only those animals accompanied by their people were allowed to cross the Bridge. Having nobody, and with nowhere else to turn, the dog trudged into the field in front of the Bridge. There he found others like himself, elderly or infirm, sad and discouraged. Unlike the other animals waiting to cross the Bridge, these animals were not running or playing. They simply were lying in the grass, staring forlornly at the pathway across the Rainbow Bridge. The old dog took his place among them, watching the pathway and waiting, yet not knowing for what he was waiting.

One of the newer dogs at the Bridge asked a cat who had been there longer to explain what was happening. The cat replied, "Those poor animals were abandoned, turned away, or left at rescue places, but never found a home on earth. They all passed on with only the love of a rescuer to comfort them. Because they had no people to love them, they have nobody to es**rt them across the Rainbow Bridge.” The dog asked the cat, "So what will happen to those animals?” Before the cat could answer, the clouds began to part and the cold turned to bright sunshine. The cat replied, "Watch, and you will see.”

In the distance was a single person, and as she approached the Bridge the old, infirm, and sad animals in the field were bathed in a golden light. They were at once made young and healthy, and stood to see what their fate would be. The animals who had previously gathered at the pathway bowed their heads as the person approached. At each bowed head, the person offered a scratch or hug.

One by one, the now youthful and healthy animals from the field fell into line behind the person. Together, they walked across the Rainbow Bridge to a future of happiness and unquestioned love. The dog asked the cat, "What just happened?” The cat responded, "That was a rescuer. The animals gathered along the pathway bowing in respect were those who had found their forever homes because of rescuers. They will cross over when their people arrive at the Bridge. The arrival here of a rescuer is a great and solemn event, and as a tribute they are permitted to perform one final act of rescue. They are allowed to es**rt all those poor animals they couldn't place on earth across the Rainbow Bridge.”

The dog thought for a moment, then said, "I like rescuers.” The cat smiled and replied, "So does heaven, my friend. So does heaven."

||Reactive Dog Guardians||

I need your help…. I am trying to navigate how I can best serve our dog community and make the biggest impact. If you wouldn’t mind sharing I’d love to gather some insight…

▪️Have you, to date, sought professional help for your dogs behavior?

▪️If not, would you feel comfortable sharing why? (Cost/Time/Not Sure Where To Start etc)

▪️How might professionals like myself make these services more accessible to you?

As someone who has both lived with and worked with reactive dogs professionally for the last 15 years, I know how hard this space can be to navigate alone. I’d like to see how I might be able to help more dogs and their humans expand their world so they can enjoy more activities together. Any and all feedback would be appreciated.🐾

07/24/2024

The OG Wonderpup himself accompanied me this past weekend for a little birthday adventure. Of all the activities we share together, this is one of my absolute favorites. I am so grateful to have been able to spend this birthday doing something that makes me happy (which always involves at least one dog or more). 🐾

Dogs Detect Human Stress Smell, Affecting Their Mood and Choices

Research shows dogs exposed to human stress odors make more pessimistic choices, indicating a negative emotional state.

The study highlights that human stress smells affect dogs' learning and perception of rewards.

This finding can improve the care and training of companion and working dogs.

The deep connection between human emotions and canine responses is more profound than previously understood.

[Empty Spaces] I’d like to take a moment to talk about empty spaces…but first, let me tell you a story about a fox and pig and all the places and spaces they once filled….

Link 🦊: A little fox arrived one day and he fit right in. He was happy to just be, to go, to see. He was gentle and sweet, and here for the fun, and he loved to announce his joy to everyone (who cared to listen, or not). The little fox was a certified good boy and best big brother, and he never turned down a chance to share his wisdom with another. He never met a stranger he couldn’t make a friend. He never went somewhere he didn’t feel right at ease, and he always made sure the other dogs could see (always with an open invitation to share in his glee). He showed them the vet was just there to help, and that new places and faces could be safe spaces. He showed them the world is there to explore free of worry for a furry little red fox and his friends, and he certainly made so very many of them.

Pavarotti 🐷: A little pig wandered down the road with no place to go, and when they asked he couldn’t quite remember if he had ever had what they call a “home”. He had places to live, for a little while or more, but as he wandered the village lost he was never really sure. He had lived in two countries and was very well traveled, but as hard as he tried he never seemed to find a space or place truly his own. This time was different, he didn’t know why, but he remembered a girl who promised to try. For three days he traveled the oceans and he even learned how to fly. Then, suddenly, the little pig found himself in a new place the humans called “the home of the brave” and he hoped and he wished with all the he could, that the humans would see that he had been good. When he arrived there was such fuss and attention, and so many things the doctors hadn’t mentioned. He tried his very best to be a brave little pig now that he had a real home of his own, but there was so very much he just didn’t know…and then the girl reminded him he was no longer alone. The doctors made mention of time being short, but time doesn’t matter to pigs who make little places and spaces big enough to fit for sport. There were cookies and birthdays, and adventures galore, and so many tiny spaces for a brave little (big) pig to lie down and snore. And so the little pig finally had his home, a space and a place of his very own. Then the days turned to years and soon he forgot, that to wish for a home was ever a thought, or what it feels like to be lost and on your own….for he was never, ever, alone, again.

If you’ve ever loved and lost a special dog, you know what it’s like to one day find so many empty spaces and places that were once their very own. Please know that if you’ve ever been given the gift of love from a dog you’ll never truly be alone. They’ll visit you in places and faces you least expect, a constant reminder of the spaces they once kept.

If you’d like to honor a dog of your own, please drop a photo of them and their spaces below. 🐾

Did you know that more dogs go missing on the 4th of July than any other day of the year!?

Below are some tips to help you keep your dog safe this holiday…

🎆 Make sure your dog is wearing an up to date visual ID such as a tag or engraved/embroidered collar

🇺🇸 If your pet is microchipped make sure you are up to date on your annual enrollment (if you don’t have a lifetime membership) and check to make sure the contact information is accurate.

🎇 Plan on taking your dog out to the bathroom before festivities start.

🎆 Be sure to take your dog out on a secure leash, even if your dog is normally trustworthy off leash or has an electric fence have a physical line on them as a safety precaution.

🇺🇸 Keep alcoholic drinks out of their reach and contact your vet immediately if you suspect they have ingested any alcohol. Fruity drinks can be quite appealing to a dog looking for a tasty treat.

🎇 Plan on keeping your dog at home/inside during the evening hours, they will be much happier and safer.

🎆 Give them a quiet and secure place to relax where they can feel safe.

🇺🇸 Play calming music and run a fan/white noise to create some background noise and block out the sounds.

🎇 Consider staying home with your pet if you suspect they may panic during the fireworks.

🎆 Calming pheromone diffusers, Happy Hoodies, and Thundershirts can be helpful options for nervous dogs.

🇺🇸 Considering prepping things like frozen kongs/topls/lickimats for your dog ahead of time so they are ready to go when needed.

🎇 Have some tasty high value treats available to offer to your dog. Reach for and deliver treats AFTER the sound occurs. Fireworks = Awesome treats are about to show up VS. Treats predict sound of fireworks happening. If your dog is frightened and panicking they likely will not show interest in food, instead focus on blocking out the noise as much as possible and helping them to feel secure.

🎆 It is okay to comfort your dog if they are frightened. The myth of “reinforcing fear” is just that, a myth. Think back to a time when perhaps you were a child and afraid of something…if a trusted caregiver offered you comfort in that moment would it make you more afraid of that thing or would it help you feel more secure? A calm and comforting presence can go a long way to helping your dog.

🇺🇸 If your dog experiences anxiety during fireworks, talk to your vet about options that may be available to help them during these events AHEAD of time (not July 3rd)!! These options are not only very effective but also generally more cost effective than otc options as well.

We hope you found these tips helpful and we wish you all a Happy 4th of July!

I have worked with Seren in a personal and professional capacity and she has been helpful every step of the way. Whether you are just starting your obedience, brushing up on some skills, teaching tricks or agility, dealing with reactivity or fear, or just want a nice loose leash walk with your furry friend- she does it all! She is kind and compassionate. Very mindful of body language in dogs, and humans! There can be many things that we as owners miss with our animals and Seren is always there with a fresh perspective to give you the best outcome possible with your pup! I would recommend her to EVERYONE looking to learn with their dog. Who ever said you can't teach an old dog new tricks never met SEREN! Local, affordable, and definitely worth it!

It's such a relief to know that the right dog training is out there. I panicked when my dog Maddie started having aggressive behavior issues, but Seren at Wonderpup dog training is fantastic! I've been working with her for a little while now and I'm seeing great results! Seren is very knowledgeable, friendly, positive and flexible. I highly recommend working with her.

✨Did you know that when it comes to hot pavement that by the time your dog is limping significant damage has already occurred? This is why we cannot use limping as a barometer to determine safety. Use the guideline below to help make decisions on what is safe for your dog.✨

✨Your dog is HAVING a hard time
Not GIVING you a hard time.✨

The next time you find yourself frustrated with your dog’s behavior, try taking a moment to assess what we could possibly change about the environment/context/criteria to help set them up for success. The onus is on us as the human half of the equation to make those adjustments and to be a safe teacher for our partner. If you’re like me, you grew up being told that good training meant asserting dominance and control. You alone were the leader and their voice/feelings/experience had no place in our training. Any deviation from desirable behavior should be met immediately with a firm hand to “correct” the mistakes and assert our place in the “pack”. What I didn’t know then was that this advice was founded on outdated behavior theory that was redacted over **40 years ago** now. The scientific community has shown that there are methods that not only perform just as well in terms of efficacy, but come without unintended consequences (behavioral fallout/increased stress hormones etc). I’ve come to learn over the years that while those methods (positive punishment) can produce results, it massively limits our communication and relationship. The best relationships are built on trust, patience, respect, and partnership. That’s not to say that we should be permissive of inappropriate or dangerous behavior, but that the path to modifying that behavior can be fair, respectful, and compassionate. If your dog feels safe to try new things, to make mistakes, and to look to you for information when they are unsure, the rest will fall into place with time and practice. If you and your dog are new to navigating this space like I once was and would like to learn more about alternative options to teach and modify behavior, please know this is a safe space to ask questions and learn. 🖤

“You can never trust a dog that has been educated by fear. There will always be something he fears more than you. But, when he trusts you, he will ask what to do when he is afraid.” 🐾

Seren is a great listener, teacher and dog trainer. She is reliable, professional and has a lot of knowledge. She really listens to her clients needs and changes her teachings to match the needs of her client and their dog. I have been going through a lot this year. I had a surgery and am immune compromised. Seren is helping me train my dog to be a service dog and has a lot of experience in this area. Seren has done virtual meetings (when I have requested) and has been very respectful ( wearing a mask, letting me know if she doesn't feel well). My dog (Lava) has already learned so much. ( Loose leash walking, waiting when told to, becoming less reactive) Each time we meet I am taught a new way to communicate with my dog better. I not only feel like Lava is behaving better but I feel like we are connecting better. With Seren's background in psychology, caring deminor and love of animals she is a great choice when choosing a dog trainer. ❤️ - Audrey & Lava

About The Trainer: Seren has been working with a variety of species including horses, dogs, cats and rats, over the past thirteen years. Seren teaches group classes as well as private lessons for obedience, detection work, trick dog, and behavior. Seren specializes in early puppy development as well as behavior modification (reactivity, aggression, anxiety). Seren is also passionate about teaching cooperative care handling skills for Fear Free grooming and vet visits. She has successfully completed the Fear Free Animal Trainer Certification Program and is recognized as a Fear Free Professional. She continues to attend online classes, seminars, and workshops, to stay up to date and informed with the most current and scientifically based training and tools. Seren trains in/competes in and has titled dogs in various sports including agility, nosework, trick dog, stunt dog, rally, and obedience. In her free time you can find Seren hiking, kayaking, or biking (usually with at least one dog in tow). She is an avid automotive enthusiast and also volunteers at a local wildlife center where she is training to become a Licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator.

Training Philosophy: I believe the foundation of all training is in the relationship you build with your dog, training should be fun! My goal is to pass along skills to owners so they understand the “how” and the “why” of training. Well trained dogs who are polite citizens are dogs who get to enjoy a world that is that much bigger as we include them in our various daily activities. I encourage all dog owners to offer their dog the education they deserve about how to live in our world, and to build a stronger relationship together through training. My training program utilizes the most up to date and scientifically based training methods and tools using a positive reinforcement/force free training approach. Training is a journey, not a destination, and I can’t wait to be a part of yours!

“Training is everything and everything is training.” -Seren Maxwell"
