Doggy Day Out with Dillinger!
Heel walking with Stuart. I see these amazing dogs trained for a high step, perfect alignment, keen focus heel and I love it. However, most owners are just hoping to be able to walk their dog through the park without being yanked around or embarrassed. Stuart came to Muttessori with big feelings on leash-frustration about not being about to run amuck leading to yanking, screaming, barking, snapping and making walking a nightmare. He couldn’t be within 40 feet of a dog without melting down. Stuart has low frustration tolerance so through a variety of games, enrichment and skills he is bulking up his ability to cope and is successfully transferring those skills in public, walking by dogs on trail and checking in when seeing squirrels. While his heel might not seem as impressive, he is a success just as much as the Mondioing dog. Could he be that? Oh yes!!!!! But that would be a different commitment and different goal for his owner and that isn’t what we are here to do. Success story Saturday! Archie, the Boston Terrier, came to Muttessori with leash reactivity and big feelings towards dogs. Here he is walking side by side with Rocky, who he later greeted and did fantastically with! Great progress Archie!
Sometimes dog training looks boring. From yanking and pulling to relaxing and watching, Stuart’s drive to chase squirrels and leash frustration had his parents being dragged through the park and made walks unpleasant for human and dog alike. Stuart has made great progress in his leash reactivity and predation substation training using a few fun games such as Leslie McDevitt’s 1-2-3, Find It and Looky-loo walks as seen here.
