When initially teaching the come command with Joey, Krista used treats as a reward to start the training process. Now that Joey is coming when called, Krista is transitioning him to praise alone as his reward. This Training Tuesday, Krista and Margo head to the dog park for some training and fun! One of the reasons why Margo’s parents brought her to Krista is to work on her social skills with other dogs. Krista wants to give Margo exercise but needs to make sure she is safe and behaves around the other pups, so she keeps her leash on. Keeping her leash on helps Krista be able to reach Margo if she starts barking aggressively towards another dog to be able to correct her behavior. Let’s say a little obedience and social skill training can go along way at the dog park and make play time safe and fun!

When young puppies play they tend to do so with their teeth and mouth with the other puppies in the litter. But when you take your puppy home, biting should not be allowed with humans. This week, first year puppy coach, Krista works with 3 1/2 month old puppy Twizzler on an alternative to biting. She first teaches the “kisses” command. When Twizzler tries to bite or nip at her she redirects her to give kisses so she doesn’t bite her, but licks instead. The “no bite” and “kisses” commands are some of the few most important training techniques a puppy can learn at this age! Puppies are never too young to start training or learning. They may not be ready for a class situation but home training begins as soon as you bring your puppy home.

This week, Krista noticed Eddie was taking treats aggressively so she teaches him how to be more gentle when doing so. She is able to accomplish this goal with Eddie by placing the treat in her fist and slowly showing it to him as she opens her hand up to avoid any accidental biting. Eddie was able to catch on quick with good practice, patience and plenty of praise and treats of course!

In today’s Training Tuesday, Krista continues to work on the “drop it” command with Nugget in addition to the get and bring commands. When teaching a puppy to drop something on command, you may need to take the object out of their mouth first so the puppy can understand what you’re teaching them. You can see this process happen after Krista initially takes the toy out of Nugget’s mouth and with more practice, he knows to drop the toy on command the second time! Does your dog show signs of anxious behavior or tendencies? If so there are a few different reasons that could be the cause or lead to your dog developing anxiety such as;
1) Lack of exercise leading to over abundance of energy
2) Not having their own space to relax and decompress such as a cage or play pen
3) Unable to stay still or settle when asked
4) Unclear of day-to-day rules
5) Constant attention seeking behavior
6) reinforced whining
These are in order of importance. If you can master the first two, then the other four should fall in place. The best way to control and help with their anxious behaviors is by providing clear leadership with predictable outcomes from the dog’s point of view. Excess energy can turn into anxiety so making sure that your dog is getting enough exercise in their daily routine is crucial. Another important way of preventing your dog from developing anxiety, is by creating space for them to decompress by themselves. Just like us, dogs need time to themselves to recharge and rest. If you are able to help your dog get a handle with the first two, the rest should not be an issue.
