Progesterone testing is key to knowing the appropriate timing for breeding.⏰

In the bitch, progesterone is a reproductive hormone that increases in the bloodstream just before ovulation. As the progesterone level increases, luteinizing hormone is released from the pituitary gland, triggering the release of eggs from the follicles. Progesterone testing can be done every two to three days, starting about five days into the heat cycle. When poor timing results in a singleton puppy or small litter, problems can occur.🐾

Amazing Merissa Garcia and her California Dream Frenchies! Thank you for being a !

"I felt pretty confident in that I had my potty training process down so I was really hesitant to try something new. I started by using the “Go Here” spray and placing them on the BP every couple hours starting the “go potty” command. It was mostly building their confidence to get up on to it on their own. I love that it’s about 2” off the ground because it set a great boundary of on/off that they really got the hang of though not high enough to hurt themselves. Pretty quickly I was getting notifications through the BP app that the pups were getting on and using it on their own! Yay! I found myself peeking in on the camera within the app while out grocery shopping. There was a 💩 and I had a proud mom moment. I was able to safely advance the pad to clean up with a touch of a button on their app. It is so incredibly convenient!"

✨Be sure the whelping box has adequate heat around 85 degrees, as puppies are not able to make their own body heat until they are 2 ½ weeks old. The whelping area should be clean and quiet and provide a comfortable, stress-free environment.

✨Plan to be present when a dam delivers her puppies, especially if it is her first litter or if she is an older female. You may be able to take quick action, if needed, to help prevent the mortality of puppies.

✨If neonates are small in size when they are born, you can help stimulate their respiration and keep them warm by rubbing their bodies and drying them. Newborn puppies with a low birth weight may have immature lungs, which could cause them to become hypothermic with a dangerously low body temperature.

✨Consult your veterinarian before giving medications such as oxytocin or ergonovine to increase uterine contractions. These medications can be dangerous as they facilitate premature placental separation, which can cause the potentially fatal condition of hypoxia or a lack of oxygen.

Raising puppies is a full-time job.🕔 During the first couple of weeks the dam (the litter’s mother) normally takes care of the puppies’ needs, but complications, such as a dam with no milk or an orphaned litter, may arise. It is the dog breeder’s responsibility to provide a safe, warm, dry place for the puppies, and proper food and water for the bitch.

Puppies are even more work (and more fun!) once they are weaned. The extra feeding, cleanup, grooming, training, and veterinary care adds up to a lot of hours—and not much free time for you.⌛

Another factor that’s critical to consider is the financial cost of having a litter of puppies. From the genetic screening and health tests before breeding to the extra food, supplies, and medical care required after the puppies are born, the cost of whelping and raising puppies can be very high, especially if complications arise.🐾

Responsible dog breeders make sure that their puppy goes to an owner who will provide it with the same love and devotion for life that the breeder has provided. This means careful screening and evaluation of each person or family interested in getting a puppy.❤️
