Hi all! It's been a minute. Hope everyone is well. I'm taking things in a different direction, so I'm clearing some stuff out of the shop. Most of my Shiny Things are now 50 percent off through Monday so it's a great time to give a bat, a cat, a zombie, or a skull their forever home!

This is my very last Game of Thrones-inspired piece - tiny and lightweight "Winter is Coming" earrings. Because winter is always coming. Hell, I live in Chicago, we're probably not done with snow yet. 😕 Anyway! These are on clearance for $10 including shipping within the US. These won't be posted on Etsy or Amazon, so just message me if you are interested!

Some holiday housekeeping:

Non-US folks: I've turned off international shipping in both my Etsy and Amazon shops. Sorry - but given how FUBAR the US postal service is right now, I have zero confidence that an item will make it overseas in anything resembling a timely fashion - if at all. :(

US folks: Unfortunately, we haven't escaped the FUBAR-ness of our postal service either. Normally I announce a cutoff date by which you all need to order to receive your Shiny Thing by Christmas. I'm not doing that this year. Postal workers - in my neighborhood and likely in yours too - have been so decimated by covid that I don't feel comfortable promising things that mail carriers may not be able to deliver. Heh, no pun intended.

Please know that I ship same-day or next-day every time I receive an order, but unfortunately we sellers cannot control what happens when the package leaves our hands, sits in a city's hub for days, and possibly ends up with incorrect tracking information (in my neighborhood, I've learned, "delivered" means "you'll get it within the next 4 days. Probably. Maybe not, though"). We also don't have access to tracking info that's any different from what the customer sees, as much as we wish we did!

So - even if you order now, your Shiny Thing likely will be later than usual in arriving, and unfortunately I cannot guarantee Christmas delivery even if you order today.

In conclusion, thanks for your understanding, please be kind to your hardworking mail carrier, and enjoy this Christmas TARDIS, which I wish I had to get orders where they need to go this year!

This holiday season, if you're shopping, please remember your local small businesses who are struggling in this pandemic. It's rough out there, kids - Amazon will likely be just fine post-pandemic, but that little shop/restaurant/artist around the corner might not be. If you're not shopping, it costs the princely sum of ZERO dollars to give small businesses' social media posts a like or a share!

Here are some of the small businesses that I've shopped recently. Feel free to post your favorites in the comments!

* Our pumpkin pie this year came from Edge of Sweetness

* Thanksgiving Day booze came from Independent Spirits, Inc. (they do free in-store pickup if you order online!)

* A few friends were gifted this very 2020-appropriate ornament from 3D-expressions LLC: https://www.etsy.com/listing/880756698/f**kflake-2020-christmas-tree-ornament?ref=yr_purchases

* I snagged a Prince ornament for Boyfriend from M. Lineham Art - looks like it sold out but he has MANY other 80s/new wave icon ornaments

* I am well stocked for a long cold dry winter with lotions from Paintbox Soapworks.

* Don't forget your local and nonlocal bars! I can't get to NYC or LA to visit Beetle House again (have been to both, HIGHLY recommend to all Tim Burton fans once this plague ends) but they have merch so I got myself an ugly Halloween sweatshirt.

This Gay Pride ornament will add a colorful, festive touch to your holiday tree this season! It was handwoven, one ring at a time, using the Celtic Visions Star chainmaille weave in silver, and all the colors of the rainbow. Its unique color palette makes it a great choice for an alternative or

I've restocked the Etsy shop with holiday ornaments - including this skull wreath which is the LAST of its kind!
As you probably know and may have experienced, USPS has been experiencing lots of delays in these crazy times, so I highly encourage early holiday ordering this year, just to be safe. Hope everyone is staying well! https://www.etsy.com/listing/213165330/skull-christmas-ornament-red-and-green?ref=listings_manager_grid

This skull Christmas ornament was handwoven, one ring at a time, using a variation of the Celtic Visions Star chainmaille weave. Hanging from the center of this gothic holiday decoration is a silver-colored skull and crossbones charm. The red and green rings used in this skull Christmas ornament

So, in these strange times, this is what looks like! The fest has gone mobile this year, with bands on flatbed trucks being driven around Rogers Park all weekend. Visit http://www.glenwoodave.org for the tour route as well as a list of participating artists and their sites! Support local artists who have had all their art shows cancelled! I’m told big video trucks will also be driving around showing photos of artists’ work. I have to admit this is a creative approach to no contact art selling!

WHOA! You guys are in luck because there are now TWO virtual art fairs this weekend at which you can buy my Shiny Things! Glenwood Ave Arts District is putting on a virtual version of the fest this year and were gracious enough to include a link to returning artists' shops including mine! This isn't even the one I was alluding to here the other day. Check out our sites and get yourself a new pandemic Shiny Thing - since none of us can vend anywhere because Covid, to say this has been a rough year for artists would be a GROSS understatement. After, what, 8 consecutive years of doing this thing it is deeply weird that I didn't haul all my show gear up to Morse and put up a tent today. I hear there's also a parade going through Rogers Park Saturday and Sunday with bands playing at a social distance so check that out too!.

Hey, at least we don't have to deal with violent storms and dead broken tents all over the show grounds like last year? No, that isn't my tent in the pic, thankfully.

I knew there was something wrong with USPS back in April when an order took 10 days to get to an address that I can walk to in minutes. I assumed it was covid-related staffing issues plus more people shopping online due to stay-home orders. It didn't occur to me that slowing the mail was an actual directive from letter carriers' superiors!

So, yeah, this is a thing that is happening. It's still going on; I get way more "where is my thing?" questions than ever before, as do my fellow small business friends.

PLEASE be patient with your orders from small businesses. We can't do anything about this. Short of switching to UPS or Fedex, I suppose, which is far more expensive than most customers are willing to pay, and small sellers like myself generally can't eat that cost particularly on small orders. If your tracking says "in transit" (as one of my own purchases has said for more than a week now), we sellers have no further information beyond that, and it's likely just caught up in this mess.

The US Postal Service is in a financial crisis, and is now instructing workers to avoid logging overtime — even if it means leaving mail behind.

Another way to help. A friend introduced me to this artist, who for the next 24 hours (hm, less now, probably through midday tomorrow sometime) is donating all proceeds from these designs to The Bail Project in Louisville. I got myself a new T-shirt!

Black lives matter. Like many of you, I am saddened, horrified, and so very angry over yet another murder of an African-American by a police officer. A Minneapolis friend shared with me this list of orgs that need our support - and for the entire month of June, I'll be donating all profits from my Etsy and Amazon sales to these orgs. June is one of my best sales months on account of my Pride jewelry, so I am hoping to be able to send lots of $$ to these groups that are working hard to stop racism and police violence.

Let's work together for a more just, peaceful, and equal world.

Once upon a time, I vended a Chicago-area show called The World of Faeries Festival. I made a ton of faerie-themed jewelry to sell at it, as one does. Turns out that no one wants to buy faeries at a faerie festival. Everyone wanted to buy TARDISes instead. Go figure! Thus was born Do Bats Eat Cats?'s First Law of Vending: Anything you make for a specific show, will not sell at THAT show, and this becomes more and more likely the later you stayed up the night before making them! At any rate, time moved on and all of my faeries, except these, ultimately found their forever home. These black and blue sparkly beauties are just $10 on Etsy or Amazon Handmade:

All hail the Pumpkin King! I have 1 left of these smiling Jack Skellington star pendants. This one hangs from a lightweight thin aluminum cable chain, but I also can put it on a keyring or zipper pull. This is one of my show-only items that won't be listed on Etsy or Amazon or Handmade, so message me if you want to grab this for yourself or that Nightmare-Before-Christmas-loving friend! On sale for $10 including shipping within the US.

Is Matt Smith YOUR Doctor? (He's not mine, I am a Tennant kind of girl, but hey, no judgment. 😉) This earrings and bracelet set were designed with the Eleventh Doctor and his "Bow Ties Are Cool" mantra in mind. This is my very last set of these, and they won't be listed on Etsy or Amazon - available here only! On sale for $25 (was $35) for the set, which includes shipping within the US.
