Training your dog in a new place with new distractions can be challenging, but also rewarding!!🏆 Start by practicing basic commands in a quiet area, then gradually introduce more distractions. Use high value treats and plenty of patience.🐾 When training your dog, it’s also important to reward them for looking at you. This helps build a strong connection and reinforces good behavior. Use treats or praise to make looking at you a positive experience for your pup. Consistency and patience are key, so keep practicing and rewarding their attention! Day 7! Sorry I’m a little late today, but don’t worry I didn’t forget! If you’ve ever seen me walk through the doors of North 40 (I’m there about 3-4 times a day🤣) and you have no idea what I’m doing with these dogs, here is an example!! Getting your dogs’ attention when in a distracting area is so important to their training. ☺️ Make sure that if your dog wants to focus on something other than you, to start making yourself more fun and rewarding than the distraction!🤩 With Archie here, I’m saying his name, then doing something that will make him look at me. December 6th’s topic: socialization!🐶 Socialization is one of the most important things you can do with your puppy at a young age. The best time for this kind of training is between 8-16 weeks of age. You’ll also hear this referred to as a puppy’s desensitization period or fear period. 😱 In this time frame, you want to be sure that your puppy is exposed to as many new sights, sounds, smells and surfaces as possible (all in a positive way). You also want to socialize your puppy to new humans and dogs. However, this one is a little different from the rest: When it comes to meeting new humans or dogs, we need to make sure we don’t over or under-socialize our dog. Over-socialized means that your dog is so used to saying hi to every human and dog he encounters that there’s a big chance he will become reactive when he sees someone because he wants to say hi so bad. 🫢 It’s okay to let your dog say hi to a lot of people and dogs, but space it out. Maybe every 3rd person your dog can say hi to, and the rest he needs to ignore! Remember, it’s your dog and you have the right to tell people that they cannot pet at this time. ✋🏼 Under-socialized means your dog won’t know how to say hi to anyone properly and might end up being very timid or reactive because of a lack of confidence when saying hi. 🙁 Overall, make sure your dog has a good balance of everything and you’ll be set!!🤩🐶 In this video, Poppy is being such a rockstar! Let’s talk about loose-leash walking (heel) on this 5th day of Christmas!🙌🏼 Training a dog to walk nice on a leash can be one of the trickiest behaviors to teach. If you are starting with a puppy who doesn’t know how to pull yet and you can start fresh, then this isn’t too bad!😁 However, if you have a dog that already knows how to pull, and he’s been rewarded for doing so (is allowed to pull towards something he wants like another human or dog to say hi), then it gets hard to break this habit. 😣🦮 With sweet Orie here, we have been working on her keeping focus on me when walking, and every time I stop, she sits next to me. Happy Saturday! It’s December 3rd, you know what that means!! 3rd day of dog training tips!🤩 Yesterday we covered selecting the right breed. I did give you a hint about what we are covering today, but I’ll go ahead and make it exciting anyway!🤣 Today’s topic!👇🏼 ✨Temperament testing!✨ What does this even mean?? Well I would love to tell you! Temperament testing is where you do a series of small tests to see which dog in a litter or a shelter will best fit your lifestyle! If you think about it, that sounds pretty cool to be able to do that! But now you may be asking, how does it work?? Depending on what kind of dog you’re looking for will depend on which of these tests you will take into consideration. For example, when I was picking out both of my dogs, I was looking for cow dog qualities. However, if you were to meet my two dogs, you wouldn’t think they have the same owner because of how different they are socially!🤣 (which is what I wanted!) Let’s cover Paisley (my 3 year old Border Collie/ Australian Shepherd. She’s the tiny bean in the video😍) During her temperament test at 6 weeks old, we were looking for things like: -Would follow me around (test shown in video). -Not scared of loud noises like pots and pans banging together -If she would chase a ball or a towel on a string to test her toy drive -If she cared more about the humans than she did going back to her litter to test her independence -How she acted within the litter (if she was tough towards her littermates while playing, this was to test her grit towards cows) -If she cared about being picked up, feet touched, teeth looked at, held on her back, etc. All of these things tested out right for Paisley and I sure got what I was looking for! 😃 Paisley is a tough, stubborn, but amazing worker. However, she isn’t the most social dog. And that’s not because I didn’t socialize her, because I sure did. This is more for the fact that I didn’t necessaril

Remember the two board and train dogs I had over Thanksgiving? 🦃 This is one of our training sessions. This is a very important video that I want everyone to really think about. 👀 This was the start of working on a stay and wait with Maverick and Darby. As you can see in the beginning, I totally lost Mavericks focus. HOWEVER, when this happened, I decided that I needed to make myself more fun and entertaining! 😊 When he did come back to me, he wanted to play. So be it, LET’S PLAY!😃 Then Darby wanted to join in which was hilarious because her little zoomies are my favorite!!😆 Training sessions do NOT have to be so serious and focused the entire time. Make it fun, make it short, make it something your dog WANTS to do rather than feeling forced to do. And take breaks!! ✨Heel/loose-leash walking✨ 👉🏼One of Churro’s training goals while he was with me for board and train was to be better on a leash! 👉🏼There’s a few different ways to start training a nice heel, and every technique works differently for every dog. 👉🏼This technique helps teach an “off-leash” heel first, then once he’s got this down, I simply add in a shorter leash, and we go from there! 🙌🏼After just 30 seconds, he was starting to understand the game!🤩 #dogtrainer #dogtraining #montanadogtrainer #montanadogtraining #trainingday #boardandtrain #boardandtrainprogram #dogtrainingtips #doodle

🐾Here’s an update on Orie, the Springer Spaniel! She is doing AMAZING with many of her basic commands, including the “stay” command!🤩 When it comes to training a stay, there are many steps that need to be done. ✋🏼 ✅First, baby steps. If you know your dog won’t stay in place for more than a couple steps, then start there. You can increase your distance by one step each time as your dog improves! ✅Second, don’t always walk backwards when asking your dog to stay. This is going to encourage them to follow you if you do it all the time. ✅Lastly, there is no need to repeat “stay” as you’re walking away. Just as I teach you to not repeat a sit or a down command over and over, same rules apply here too!😃 P.s. To start off the week, we are going to talk about the “wait” command!☝🏼 ➡️Wait is a command that I use in everyday life with my dogs. ➡️This is also one of the first commands I work on with your dog when you sign up for training with me! Why do we use it?
