It’s with bittersweet emotions that we announce Dr. Jones will be leaving our practice early this October. She and her husband have decided it is the best decision for their young family to move back home to NC where Dr. Jones will be able to spend more time with her daughter, surrounded by the support of family and friends.

Dr. Jones has been an integral part of our team, providing exceptional care and compassion to our patients and their families since joining us as a new graduate in 2021. We are incredibly grateful for the dedication and expertise she has brought to our practice over the last three years.

A note from Dr. Jones, “Thank you from the bottom of my heart for placing your trust in me. Please understand, the strong relationships I have developed while at AVS make this decision a truly difficult one. It has been an absolute pleasure getting to know and serve each and every one of you over the years!”

Please join us in thanking Dr. Jones for her incredible service and wishing her and her family all the happiness and success in the future. If you would like to schedule another appointment with Dr. Jones, please make sure to schedule prior to October the 4th!

We are looking to find a new forever home for one of our favorite patients, Krampus! He is a two-year-old LaManche who has a big personality and would make a great addition to someone's herd. He’s very social and doesn’t do well by himself. He was recently castrated and recovered with flying colors so he is ready to find his new home! He does require a home with secure fencing and plenty of room to graze as he is a bit of an escape artist. He's an excellent brush clearer and is happy to show you his climbing skills, too! If you're interested in adding our sweet friend to your herd, please let us know!

Another successful enucleation! Dr. Jones helped this gentle gelding get some relief following a pr*****ed lens resulting from chronic uveitis, which had left him blind and in constant pain in his left eye. Sometimes when we can’t control the pain, the only option is to completely remove the eye, but this young man has lots of happy, pain free days ahead! 🐴🍏

Check out these INCREDIBLE before and after photos! What you’re looking at is a horse’s stomach with gastric ulcers. This patient was treated for six weeks and rechecked today to ensure things were going well, and they definitely are headed in the right direction. Gastroscopy is the only way to definitively diagnose and monitor gastric ulcers and there are many treatment options available depending on the type, grade and severity.

Update: It seems that carrier issues are reslolved and all cell services should be back to normal!

There is a nationwide cellphone outage across multiple carriers 🚨this will definitely affect how we are able to communicate as there is no information to help know when this will be resolved.

Our office phones are still working and we are able to receive and make phone calls.

If you have an animal emergency or need to contact our office but your cellphone isn’t working, we will be available to communicate via email at [email protected]. Please put “EMERGENCY” in the subject line to draw our attention to your message first if you’re experiencing an animal emergency.

By the age of three, up to 70% of dogs and cats have some degree of dental disease. The early signs of dental disease in pets include bad breath, yellow or brown tarter buildup on the teeth, and red and swollen gums.

The best way to prevent dental disease is to brush your pet’s teeth daily. This habit is easiest to start during the puppy or kitten phase, but any pet can be trained to tolerate tooth brushing. Keep in mind that tooth brushing or other at-home dental care does not get rid of tarter and disease that is already present - it only helps keep more tarter from forming. For recommendations on pet toothpastes, toothbrushes, or scientifically-backed alternatives such as dental treats and water additives, check out the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) lists for dogs and cats! https://vohc.org/

Did you know that February is Pet Dental Health Month? We will be sharing information about pet dental health and small animal dentistry all month - see if you pick up on something that you didn’t know before! Best of all, we are now able to offer small animal dentistry including cleanings, extractions and much more here at Appalachian Veterinary Services!

To kick off this month of posts, we’ll be starting with some fun facts about pet dental health!

🦷 Adult dogs have 42 teeth and adult cats have 30 teeth. Wow! That’s a whole lot of teeth to take care of! Puppies and kittens usually start to sprout their baby teeth, also called deciduous teeth, between 3 and 5 weeks of age. Puppies will have around 28 deciduous teeth while kittens usually only have 26 deciduous teeth. You can expect adult, or permanent, teeth in both dogs and cats to start erupting between 4-6 months of age.

Congratulations to our current extern from for passing her licensing exam, and for giving us the honor of being the practice she was visiting when she found out! Claire has been with us for the past three weeks gaining all the experience we could share with her.

Externships are such an important part of a veterinarian’s curriculum, as real world experience is a critical adjunct to in-class learning. Without veterinary students, our profession would cease to exist! Appalachian Vet proudly hosts vet students and hope to give them as much of a hands on experience as possible as mentorship is a huge part of our culture.

Claire is the first of 9 externs we will be hosting in 2024, and we hope to continue expanding our impact to the student community as our practice grows.

Dental care is one of the most cost effective investments you can make in your horse’s lifelong health. ❤️

Careful reduction of sharp enamel points and abnormalities is critical in maintaining a healthy and comfortable mouth.

🦷 Ensuring that teeth are not over-corrected is also critical, as once the tooth is gone, it’s not coming back! Here is an example of a 5 year old gelding after dental float. Special care is taken to reduce abnormalities while maintaining as much of the normal structure of the tooth as possible to ensure we are not prematurely wearing the cheek teeth and incisors.

🐎 Typically, younger horses need more frequent dental work because of all the changes happening in their dental arcade as they grow.

Appalachian Vet utilizes safe sedation and the most advanced equipment available to keep patients comfortable and ensure they are getting the absolute best dental care while under our care. Give us a call or visit our website to schedule your horse’s dental visit!
