Indeed! Our chooks can handle the cold due to their feathers but their little feet, combs, and wattles are especially sensitive to frostbite. So, our chooks hang out indoors during this kind of weather.

These fluffy butts are getting bigger and fluffier every year! It’s very important to supplement your chickens’ diets with extra protein in the winter months, especially while molting!

Our chickens enjoy a variety of yummy protein treats year round, but some of my favorites to feed include soldier fly larvae, scrambled eggs, and cat food. Yes, cat food is a safe and economical way to help boost protein and chickens absolutely love it!

When they start to slow their laying during this time of year, we also switch them off of layer feed and onto something with more fat and protein such as a feather fixer recipe. This helps them regrow their feathers quickly and easily following a molt. Doing this also tends to allow them to bounce back from the shorter days and resume egg production a little earlier in the spring when we start to transition them back to a layer formula. They do not slow or stop laying during their spring molt as a result!

Sneak peak at what’s coming at the end of the month! Every year it’s a good idea to add in a couple new hens so that you have a consistent amount of layers as others age out of laying or as you lose some (which is inevitable). 4 new ladies will be joining the flock this year!

Part of the adventure this year is learning how to grow crops for food right here in the backyard. I’m very happy that so many of my seeds have sprouted, but I might actually have ended up with too many. I’ve thinned several of these guys already!

Hi everyone, and thanks for coming to take a look at Lynn’s Hens & Home! We are at the beginning of our urban farm/small homestead adventure and decided to go ahead and create a page after suggestions from our local community who quickly fell in love with our chickens.

Our long term goal is a more self sustainable lifestyle. We are raising chickens for eggs and meat (but primarily eggs), learning how to compost fertilizer for growing crops, and learning how to grow crops!! For now we’re just a humble backyard urban homestead but one day we’re confident we’ll be able to take this a step further and have our own farm.

Feel free to stick around and follow us on our homesteading journey and for lots of tips and tricks along the way for making your home a more sustainable, nature friendly place to be!
