The third sister to Zola and Lulu will be staying here at the Cincinnati Zoo. Her name is Kiara which means “princess” in Swahili. She is perhaps the most bold of the three, and is picking up her training very quickly. She will continue to grow, train and become an ambassador with her sisters here and will one day be a part of the running program where she will reach speeds of up to 70mph! Seeing a cheetah run full speed is something you’ll never forget, and we hope inspires people to want to help save the cheetah. Just like we hope sharing their stories of growing up at the zoo will as well!

We are celebrating our 150th anniversary this year so will be sharing snippets of our past on social media throughout the year!
On Jan. 24, 2017, the Cincinnati Zoo's baby hippo, Fiona, was born six weeks before her due date. She weighed only 29lbs. Fiona is the smallest hippo ever to survive. Her story of perseverance has served as inspiration for many.

Flounder the Asian small-clawed otter snacking on shrimp 🦐.
Asian small-clawed otters are opportunistic feeders with a varied diet. They primarily enjoy aquatic prey, such as crustaceans, mollusks, fish, insects, and small amphibians.
They are skilled hunters and often work in groups to find and catch food, using their dexterous paws to break open shells or catch slippery fish.

We’re careful when giving Rico scratches, but turns out he’s careful scratching himself too.

A lazy Sunday morning with Juno the two-toed sloth.
Sloths aren't ctually lazy—they're just masters of energy conservation! Their slow movements and long resting periods are adaptations to their low-energy diet and need to conserve energy in their natural habitat. So while they might seem lazy to us, they're just perfectly suited to their environment.

Today is National Wear Red Day to raise awareness about heart disease, a leading cause of death in Americans, especially women. Did you know that red pandas have also been diagnosed with heart disease? One review of mortality in red pandas found that the leading cause of death in older pandas was heart disease, with about 1 in 4 affected. Because of this study, the red pandas at the Cincinnati Zoo get an echocardiogram, a heart exam by a cardiologist, as part of their routine health exams. We’re happy to report that our red pandas appear healthy and we’ll continue to monitor them closely!
