The importance of the place command
These guys graduated from crates and are transitioning to their beds. I recommend indoor tethering when you are moving about the house, so the dog can’t wander off while you’re doing something else. I tether on average 20-30 minutes at a time, max, just so the dog knows I prefer him on his bed. This also helps build confidence and ease separation anxiety. As an added benefit, my crate spinner is much calmer, since there is no barrier. If they fall asleep, I leave them alone for a bit, unless I need to go somewhere or do something where I can’t look in on them frequently.
NEVER tie up a dog and leave him alone.

Dogs on the furniture:
As a trainer, it’s not something I worry about with my clients, unless they are having problems. The client got a dog so they would have a snuggle buddy, usually. The problems occur when the dog is elevated and takes it for granted. If your dog refuses to get down and defends his spot- no furniture, ever. If the dog is going potty in the house, no furniture until the problem is solved. Furniture is a privilege for the best boys and girls. After training, I advise no furniture until the relationship dynamic has changed for the better, usually a couple of months. When in doubt, keep the dog on the floor. And grant permission. Don’t allow a pup to just jump up on you!
