If you don’t have Sarcococca ( sweetbox plant) in your garden you should… it blooms with tiny little flowers in the middle of winter and has a sweet fragrance that has the promise even on a cold night like this that Spring will come

If you want to know the pleasure of adopting a senior, just ask me...

Daisy, Daisy, won’t you say “a-woo”? I’m half crazy, falling in love with you! Just like her namesake, this lovely lady is a female 43-pound Terrier mix who has spent her 13 years in this world bringing joy and cheerfulness to everyone around her!

For her next adventure in life, Daisy would be comfortable in a home with dogs, cats, or dog-savvy teens over 8. More than anything, she’s searching for a comfy lap where she can spend her golden years being doted upon and taken on evening strolls. If this daisy made you say “I love her,” fill out our dog adoption application today to set up a meet and greet! ❤️🐶

Looking over pictures tonight I realize that there are quite a few that show dogs ( mostly my own) wearing collars like these. This picture is of Bobby by the way, Prince Charming of the staff at Dogpatch. These collars or a long line are required to be worn on all dogs that are not in the fenced dog parks. While they were once e-collars meant to shock dogs that feature, if you can call it that has been disabled on these collars. There is no way that a dog can get shocked even if the wrong button on the remote is pushed (there are rubber covers over the metal prongs) The reason they are required here is that they have a “locate “ beep that can be activated with a hand held remote. That beep can be heard for over a quarter of a mile. What this means is should a deer, rabbit or just a crazy notion cross the dogs path and they decide to chase it a ways they cannot be lost. While gps and apple trackers are great out here in the woods they are not reliable. The safety of my own dogs as well as those that are entrusted to me is always my primary concern. All dogs that go on sniff aria with us in the woods wear these collars. Before we venture out with them we make sure that they are not “ noise sensitive “ so that the tone doesn’t scare them or become a punitive measure. Dogpatch is a force free environment with positive reinforcement and reward based methods. I recommend these collars to anyone that hikes, camps or takes their dogs on off leash adventures. Reach out to me if you would like more info.

Rick and I are planning on doing most of our vacationing in Pacific City for a while, but for those of you who have decided to venture back to our beloved Maui, here is a great idea. Pack light, all you need there is “slippers” and a sundress or shorts. But take as many suitcases as you are allowed full to the maximum with the things that are still so desperately needed for the survivors of the devastating fires. Both men’s and women’s underwear ( can fit a lot in a suitcase without much weight), clothing of all types, research to see what is needed most. Then donate both the clothing AND the suitcases. Many people are starting the transition out of the hotels and into alternate places to live and have no way of packing and moving what possessions they have. You can vacation, enjoy yourself and with a small inconvenience help a lot of folks who are struggling.

Your dogs are missing Lara this month as October is Pumpkin Patch fun… while your dogs are busy having fun at Dogpatch you should take a little drive out and check out this amazing spot. After you pick out your pumpkins and maybe take a ride on the pig train you can always head up for a scenic fall drive in the gorge. Bring me back some apple cider and a fresh made donut or two please.

Maui....Paradise Lost...Such loss. I have an idea for all of you wondering where to donate. We all want our donations to make a difference and to optimize what we give. Rick and I have chosen to find links to the special experiences we enjoyed while on the Island. The employees of the Sail and Snorkel trips we took at least twice each trip, the staff at our condo, the snorkel shop that we rented from....We are giving it a little time, then contacting them directly to donate to our extended family there. This, along donating to REPUTABLE agencies. Please be warned not to fall for the pleas on Facebook for one particular animal or story to donate through a gofundme or a group that you can not research. Donate directly or research. The scammers are everywhere. On a different note if any of you are searching for loved ones I found a facebook group called maui 24/7 scanner. It provided me some very good news, and some very bad news, but it was news I was desperately looking for.

We are all trying to process the news coming from Maui the best way we can. Before you decide on how much to donate to our friends in Paradise Lost please consider this and maybe add a little extra. Many of us mourn the great loss on the Island as we have precious memories that will not be able to be revisited in our lifetimes. My meditations are on those people who I have befriended while there, the ones that I know on a first name basis only, the ones that I will never know if they survived. The charming man that wove pineapple baskets that I brought home each year. The crew on the boats that greeted us yearly by name and promised to visit us on the Oregon Coast "someday". Our favorite waitress that always had a table "just for us". The gentle giant that carved the turtle out of monkeypod wood that sits on my dining table. The staff of the condo where we stayed each year. The island of Maui was indeed our favorite spot to vacation, however it was the People there, our extended Ohana that made it warm and welcoming each time. I will say it again...the people special to Rick and I that we will never know if survived. It is terrifying enough to see the devastation to the historic Lahaina town, and in fact the entire Island of Maui. However it is when you realize the population density in that area that the horror really sinks in. Couple that with the fact that area was home to many of the workers at the places that helped make your vacations special. Please Give if you can. A lot of littles can go so far. Knowing that sometimes we like to donate in someones name, I wish only that I could donate to those whose names I do not know...the ones I can only hope got out.
If we can learn from this tragedy, let us learn to be a little more patient, a little kinder to those we meet along the way. When enjoying travel learn names, tip generously, shake hands, greet with a hug. I like to pen my own thoughts, but the following sums it up
“I shall pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do…
or ANY kindness that I can show…
to ANY human being,
let me do it NOW.
Let me not defer or neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.“

Years ago I purged my closet of neutrals and most black outfits. I realized that I needed to embrace the things that brought me joy and not choose my outfits because they are “slimming”. I wear vivid pink and turquoise and orange and greens. If I find a “rockabilly “ dress with a full skirt I have been known to give it a twirl while dancing with the dogs. Color makes me happy. But now and again I wonder if maybe I should tone it down a bit. Today Mother Nature reminded me to knock that idea right out of my head… she doesn’t heed fashion rules to tone it down. Mother Nature twirls with her colors, and never conforms to any rule. I will follow her advice and continue with my dance through life in all the colors of joy

We never had a lot of fresh flowers in our home while I was growing up. The exception was this black vase that my mother would fill with iris. I understand her so well now. I can hardly stand to pick my flowers preferring by far to visit them in the garden daily. The kiss of dew on the flowers in the morning brings me joy. But when the forecast is for rain as it is for the next few days the drought loving iris will suffer so out I go with my pruners and out comes my mothers vase. My role models for gardening my mother and Mr and Mrs Leach ( of Leach Gardens) spent more time in the garden than indoors so of course they taught me to prefer bouquets “on the vine”

WITH THE FORECAST FOR EXCESSIVE HEAT THIS WEEK I HAVE MADE THE CALL TO CANCEL THIS WEEKS PARTY VANS. WE CAN KEEP THE DOGS COOL THAT ARE BOARDING WITH US BY GETTING OUT EARLY MORNING AND LATE EVENING IN THE WONDERUL SHADE OF THE DOGPARKS HOWEVER TRANSPORTING OUR GOOD FRIENDS IN THE VANS DURING THE HEAT OF THE AFTERNOON IS NEVER A RISK THAT WE TAKE WHEN THE TEMPS GET THIS HIGH. ALSO WHEN THE DOGS GET OVERHEATED THEY HAVE A VERY HARD TIME COOLING BACK DOWN SO WE RECOMMEND LIGHT IF ANY EXERCISE FOR OUR FOUR LEGGED FRIENDS. IF YOU HAVE RESERVED BOARDING WE WILL STILL BE MAKING THE TRIP INTO TOWN IN THE MORNINGS TO PICK UP ANY DOGS THAT WILL BE STAYING WITH US, AND I WILL BE REACHING OUT TO YOU TO MAKE PLANS. IF YOU DON'T HAVE AIR CONDITIONING OR A WAY FOR YOUR DOG TO BE COMFORTABLE DURING THE DAY WE DO HAVE A FEW LIMITED SPOTS FOR YOUR DOG TO STAY OVER , SO A MORNING DROP OFF AND A MORNING PICK UP

You know that I like to fill my feed with positive messages. Pictures of cute puppies and handsome dogs. Every once in a while however there is something that I feel so strongly about that I throw that to the wind and post something a little hard to read. This article brings to light something that friends of Dogpatch have been fighting against for several years. The management of the Multnomah County Animal Shelter needs to be held accountable for the mistreatment of the dogs in their care. This is not tabloid news folks, this is the facts and I am hoping that the more animal advocates that become aware of the situation the more pressure we can put on the Multnomah County Commissioners to do the right thing. There needs to be some accountability here, and it needs to happen sooner than later. Many of you know I foster dogs on a regular basis. The socialization and atmosphere at Dogpatch helps many of them to destress and become their true selves while waiting to find forever. My heart breaks knowing the fate of the dogs that are being held at the shelter. Please if any of you have connections with the media, or even the Powers that be at Multnomah County. If any of you know a way to shake this up...please please pick up your phone and lets get awareness out there. There are a lot of rescue groups in Portland area doing a lot more with a lot less. But those groups have hearts...it appears that is a trait that is hard to find at the management level of Multnomah County Animal Shelter.

“How these dogs are being treated, it’s inhumane, it’s torture,” said Kayla Popper, who quit her job as an animal care technician in November.
