Too much fresh spring forage for horses brings a risk of “grass founder,” a form of laminitis, that can be lethal to horses.

Hooves are not all the same shape. These are the five basic shapes. If you buy a front pattern shoe, it is the Norman shape. But that doesn’t fit every foot. I like to use a standard shoe, that I can shape to fit the individual foot.

This guy has an old injury that has distorted his hoof. The heel is not back where it should be. I put the heel of the shoe back farther and floated the heel to try and give additional support.

My name is Jarom Manning and I’m a fifth generation Farrier. I’ve been shoeing horses in the Cache Valley Utah area for about 14 years. I have experience with many different breeds of horses, as well as, draft horses, ponies, minis, mules, donkeys and corrective shoeing.

My father is a world renowned Farrier/Blacksmith, and has provided me with invaluable instruction that has helped me become the farrier I am today. Some of his achievements include taking 1st place in the world championship blacksmith competition in 1986 and becoming inducted into the Horseshoer's Hall of Fame.

As a young child, I started off by sweeping the floors and shoveling the manure in my dad's shop. As I got older, I became a striker for my dad as he forged hammers or other tools. Under my father’s expert guidance, I had the opportunity to do an apprenticeship through the Utah Arts Council. I learned the principles of blacksmithing and farrier work. I was able to forge many of my own farrier tools.

I began shoeing on my own 14 years ago. Throughout this time, I have continued learning and refining my skills by attending clinics and workshops. I am dedicated to make sure every horse I work with receives the highest standard of care and look forward to partnering with you to keep your beloved companions happy, healthy and thriving
