Our dogs’ paws are just as sensitive as our feet. Here are some ways to protect your dog’s paws on hot pavement (or artificial grass):

🐾 Check the weather and take precautions before you take your pet outside. Asphalt temperatures can vary with air temperatures, cloud cover, wind, etc. For example, 77°F air temp could result in 125°F asphalt temp - and it only takes 60 seconds on 125°F asphalt for a dog's pads to burn.
🐾 Place the back of your hand on the ground for 7 seconds, if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog.
🐾 Walk early in the morning or late in the evening when surfaces are cooler.
🐾 If your pet can easily adapt to them, invest in a pair of booties to protect your pet's paws.

Symptoms of paw burn may include limping, refusing to walk, darker than usual or discolored pads, excessive licking or biting of feet, visible blisters, extreme redness, and missing skin or parts of pads.

If your pet experiences burnt paws, contact CVES at 931-551-2121.

Meet Poppy, a one-year-old Goldendoodle who came into the ER last Friday night, unable to walk. Dr. Christina Miller diagnosed her with myasthenia gravis, a condition that affects nerve and muscle communication, causing weakness and fatigue. This led to a secondary condition, megaesophagus, where the esophagus can't move food properly, causing regurgitation and difficulty swallowing.

Poppy now needs to sit upright to eat and stay that way for 15 minutes after meals to keep her food down. Here’s a sweet moment with Autumn, our ICU tech, giving Poppy some extra cuddle time after her meal. Poppy stayed with us all weekend for care and support due to her lack of mobility. Keep Poppy in your thoughts as she continues her recovery! 🐾💖

Happy Hug Your Cat Day! 🐱 Did you know that there are scientifically-proven health benefits to cat ownership?

❣ Cat owners have a lowered risk of heart disease and stroke due to the relaxing effects felines have on their humans which minimizes stress and lowers blood pressure.

❣ A cat's purr creates vibrations at a frequency of 20-140 HZ, and studies have shown that frequencies in the 18-35 HZ range have a positive effect on human joint mobility after injury.

❣ If you spend 15-30 minutes a day petting or playing with your cat it can boost your mood! A result due to a rise in serotonin and a decrease in cortisol.

Showing your cat love and affection will let them know you care for them too - so give your cat extra lovin' today and give them a hug!

Sugar, a 2-year-old Maltese, presented to our ER with difficulty birthing her puppies over several hours. Radiographs showed 2 puppies, one of which was stuck in the birth canal.

Upon her arrival, Dr. Miller and the team sprang into action to help ensure the puppy made it out safely. Dr. Miller carefully manipulated Sugar and the stuck puppy until she successfully delivered a little boy!!

After a few more pushes and some additional help from Dr. Miller, Sugar delivered another boy. All three went home happy and healthy. 💓 💙 💙

Hunter, a 5-year-old domestic short-haired cat was transferred to our facility for care after being diagnosed with Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) at his primary veterinarian. He spent a week in the care of our emergency and internal medicine departments. He was such a good boy and was most calm and content when inside his litter box. This was Maygan taking Hunter's blood pressure from the comfort of his box. 😺

Piper, a 3-year-old domestic short-haired cat presented to the CVES emergency department when her owner noticed she was constantly straining to urinate. Dr. Chaudoin performed an exam with diagnostics, determining she needed more than medication alone to resolve the issue. Her bladder was very inflamed and tender so we placed a urinary catheter and kept her hospitalized overnight to help alleviate pain and stress.

Piper followed up with our board-certified surgeon, Dr. Streppa, the next morning to discuss options, including a cystotomy.
