#Greatlakeshedgehog Tillie anointing after being returned to her clean enclosure
This is anointing.
Anointing is a common behavior when a new scent is introduced to your hedgehog. No one knows exactly why they do this. Generally though it is done with a scent that your hedgehog likes! (So we consider it a compliment ππΌββοΈ) Tillie is anointing after being returned to her clean enclosure.
There is no need for concern if your hedgehog anoints! And as you can see in the video, your hedgehog may anoint multiple times! While I may not be able to tell you exactly why a hedgehog does this, I CAN tell you what this behavior is NOT:
1. A seizure
2. A hedgehog vomiting
3. A hedgehog possession π
This is just another reason why we love our prickly friends here at GLHH! If your hedgie anoints, video and share! We love to see how our GLHH babies are growing π₯°

When it's cleaning day and they take your hide away to wash it... you burrow! π

Look at how big Litter G is getting! π
Hoglets are venturing beyond the hide and testing the water bottle. Momma Tillie is always close by π₯°

Giles Jogger Bucket Wheel, Great Lakes Hedgehogs
Did you know that hedgehogs can run up to 12 miles each night?! That is why safe wheels are so critical to their care/well being. This video is of Lattey running on one of our new style wheels. She will run like this all night long!
We started making these wheels because we were not happy with what was available. Either they were made out of wire or multiple pieces that could catch their toes. We heard too many horror stories of hedgies losing toes to be comfortable using those. The bucket/pan wheels are one solid piece... so no worries about catching toes! We also wanted something that was easy to clean. Jeremiah spent many nights after work perfecting the bearing assembly on our wheels. It's easy to disassemble, clean, and reassemble.
