PATELLAR LUXATION

The patella, or "kneecap," is normally located in a groove on the end of the femur, or thighbone. The term luxating means "out of place" or "dislocated". Therefore, a luxating patella is a kneecap that moves out of its normal location. It generally resumes its normal anatomical orientation after only a brief period of luxation in most dogs. A dislocated kneecap is usually caused by a genetic malformation, trauma or lifestyle.

Genetic :

Many toy or small breed dogs have a genetic predisposition for a luxating patella due to a congenitally shallow trochlear groove. Hereditary health conditions can skip multiple generations so it is impossible to eradicate the condition.

Trauma :

If your puppy or dog is injured in an accident involving the limps it could trigger luxating patella. During our puppies hand over we always stress the importance of never leaving your puppy unsupervised, height safety and not leaving your toy breed dog unattended with larger dogs, young children or leaving your dog/puppy on a high sofa/bed in case they jump off and hurt themselves.

Lifestyle :

When purchasing a puppy from Chelsea Chihuahua we always ask a set of questions to better understand what lifestyle you wish to have with your Chihuahua, whether outdoors with regular countryside walks or an urban companion handbag dog. Chihuahuas are suited to both, however a teacup Chihuahua would not be suited to an outdoor lifestyle and expected to play and keep up with larger breed dogs, it's common sense. Chihuahuas are the smallest dog breed in the World, and need to be treated with extra care.

The grading system for patellar luxation is based on the how mobile the kneecap is relative to the groove at the base of the femur.

Grade 1: A kneecap that can be luxating with manual pressure but is otherwise is within the groove.

Grade 2: The kneecap spontaneously luxates, is typically associated with a skipping lameness when the kneecap moves.

CASTRATION

Chelsea Chihuahua recommend to castrate male Chihuahua puppies between 7 – 12 months of age. None castrated males can develop behaviour issues such as small dog syndrome which makes them dominant, territorial and aggressive. The most common problems are urinating in the home to mark territory and constant barking/yapping. The day your male puppy lifts his leg to urinate on furniture in the home, book him in the next day for the chop. If left too long the problem will continue after castration, which is why we recommend to castrate before the age of one.

Straight forward castrations take the vet five to fifteen minutes via key hole surgery and your male puppy should bounce back same day.



Testicles

Chihuahua testicles take longer to descend than other standard size dog breeds. It may take up to six months.



Un-desceted Testicles

Cryptorchidism is a condition characterised by incomplete or non-existent descent of the testicles which is common in toy and miniature breed dogs. The condition is rarely associated with pain.

What causes the te**is to remain undescended or incompletely descended is unknown. This is not a preventable condition.

To arrive at a diagnosis, your veterinarian will use ultrasound as the most reliable diagnostic tool to locate the undescended te**is, along with palpation (touch) of the groin and abdomen to locate the te**is. For undescended testicles, castrations are straightforward but more invasive and longer in procedure time. Dogs will make a full recovery provided there are no infections post op.

To help your male dog during the healing process use a soft cone, or baby grow so they are not subjected to the uncomfortable plastic cone of shame. Be sure to order the soft cone/baby grow before the op.

And obviously, a pet with no testicles cannot develop cancers or infections of those organs.

TIPs:
If your dog needs to wear a cone, before an op be sure to request from the vet a soft blue cone and if they do

SPAYING

Chelsea Chihuahua recommends to spay your female three months after her first season.

Female Chihuahua puppies will have a season as early as 7/8 months or as late as 10/11 months of age. Waiting to spay after the first season will ensure your female is no longer a puppy but a young dog, and her body will cope better with sedation to carry out the procedure.

The season lasts on average two-three weeks, and females have on average two seasons a year.

Some females have a heavy season and will spot a lot, other females may not spot at all. The v***a will swell to triple the size maybe more, and she may lick the area more than normal. When your female Chihuahua is in season her behaviour may also change. She may become more clingy than normal and be very demanding of attention, or on the other hand, she may become grumpy and snappy and wish to be left alone! She will also find it hard to concentrate on normal activities such as training and listening to you, and may fail to come when called or otherwise seem to be ignoring you. During her season, it is a poor time to try to introduce any new training commands or work on new skills, as your bitch will find it very hard to concentrate! The behaviour of the bitch in season will likely become overtly sexual as well, and she will welcome the approach of all male dogs. She should be closely supervised during this time to ensure that she does not come into contact with an un-neutered male dog.



Spaying a female dog has a significant benefit in terms of reducing the risk of mammary cancer. Pyometra, a life-threatening infection of the uterus, is also very common in intact female dogs, and up to a quarter of intact dogs will develop it by ten years of age, according to one study. And obviously, a pet with no ovaries, testicles, or uterus cannot develop cancers or infections of those organs.

Dental

Chihuahuas, like many toy breeds, are prone to dental problems due to their somewhat soft teeth and small mouths which make brushing difficult.

The main danger is bacteria that can cause: tooth decay, infection (which begins at the gum line but can travel to other parts of the body through the bloodstream) and eventual tooth loss.



Puppies "milk" teeth will grow at approximate 5 to 6 weeks of age. Once all have erupted, there will be 28 deciduous puppy teeth.

At about the age of 4 to 5 months, a Chihuahua puppy will begin teething. Permanent adult canine teeth begin to grow in during this teething phase.

Often, a puppy's milk tooth will fall out while eating or playing. Since a pup's tooth is very small, it is often swallowed before an owner notices that it has fallen out. When the teething process is complete, the Chihuahua will then have 42 permanent teeth.

Examine your puppy's mouth every week, beginning at the age of 3 months until teething is complete. If you spot any “milk” teeth that have not fallen out your puppy will require a dental check up to have them removed by the vet.

Chihuahua “milk” teeth often take longer than other breed dogs to fall out. Chelsea Chihuahua recommend you wait as long as possible provided no food is getting stuck between the milk and adult tooth which could cause decay. Check the teeth every day when you puppy is relaxed and sleeping on your lap.

A puppy needs to be sedated for a dental so no dental should be carried out on a puppy before the age of 7 months. This is the age that boy puppies will also get castrated. To avoid sedating your male puppy twice under the age of one, a skilled Vet will be able to do both procedures at the same time. If your male has a lodged testicle which will require a more invasive procedure we do not recommend to carry the dental at the same time. For female puppies, who we recommend are spayed after their first season when they are over the age of one, a dental can be carried

New Home, New Bacteria

Diarrhoea in puppies is a very common problem, often because they will put almost anything in their mouth and are still developing immune defences and unable to fight bacteria.

Diarrhoea can range from mild to severe. Most cases of mild diarrhoea can be treated at home without prescription medication.



Mild : Loose stool but puppy is still playful, active, eating and drinking.

Severe : Loose stool, loss of appetite and lethargy.



If your puppy has severe Diarrhoea and is vomiting GO TO YOUR VET IMMEDIATELY.



Treating MILD Diarrhoea

1. Diet
Replace all meals with bland food such as salt-free boiled chicken. You can try add white rice mixed with vegetable broth to enhance the flavour. Fibre from cooked sweet potato is also recommended to help normalise stools. Offer your puppy 4 to 5 small bland meals throughout the day. Remember to also remove and throw out all chews.

2. Beneficial Bacteria
Yogurt has beneficial bacteria that can help restore balance in your puppy's belly and firm up stools. Offer yogurt on a spoon to lick off. Some puppies may not like the taste or texture of yogurt, but you can try adding ½ a teaspoon mixed into the food.

3. Over-the-Counter Treatment
Anti-diarrhoea and probiotic medicine can be purchased from your local pet store. However the best medicine can only be prescribed by your vet. Chelsea Chihuahua recommend prokolin paste which you put directly into your puppies mouth.


Make sure your puppy gets plenty of water during a bout of diarrhoea to avoid dehydration. Dehydration is a concern for young puppies, and can become a danger to their health quickly.

If diarrhoea lasts more than a day or two, is liquid, has blood, or is accompanied with off behavior like weakness or vomiting GO TO YOUR VET IMMEDIATELY
