Our state laws are antiquated and do not provide protection from egregious acts of abuse. How frustrated have you become watching all the cruelty that goes on in Ohio, only to watch the abuser walk away with a fine. Dick Goddard and the Public Animal Welfare Society have witnessed a tremendous increase in animal abuse in just the last several years. Alone we can do very little, but just think what
we can all do as a whole. The word “Alliance” is defined as an association of groups with common aim: an association of groups, people, or nations who agree to cooperate to achieve a common goal. Now I’d like you to go back and think about a world with people like us, gathered together as a whole with a common goal. Dick Goddard, PAWS Ohio, Rescue Village, Lake County Humane, Cuyahoga County Kennel, Save Ohio Strays, Marilyn's Voice, and numerous others have a goal of an Alliance for Companion Animal Cruelty Reform in The State of Ohio. Our mission is to seek felony provisions in Ohio law to address Ohio statues that are detrimental to the protection of cats and dogs in the State of Ohio. We are a grassroots movement comprised of Ohio non-profits, shelters, adopters and other interested parties who are dedicated to reforming animal cruelty laws. We believe this can be achieved through alliances with likeminded individual(s), educating our legislator on the acceleration of egregious cruelty and the lack of provisions given to prosecutors who rely on the law to bring about true consequences. We are asking our legislator to look statute 959.13 Cruelty to animals and differentiate between neglecting, and knowingly torturing.
959.13 Cruelty to animals. (A) No person shall:
(1) Torture an animal, deprive one of necessary sustenance, unnecessarily or cruelly beat, needlessly mutilate or kill, or impound or confine an animal without supplying it during such confinement with a sufficient quantity of good wholesome food and water. This is a grassroots effort with the incredible help of Senator Hottinger, Senator Yuko and others at the Ohio Statehouse. At this time we continue to look for people who believe in uniting for the greater good to make changes in Ohio’s animal cruelty laws. We all need to be a voice for those that can’t speak. SB 164 otherwise known as Goddard's Law now waits in the Ohio Senate AG Committee. Hopefully with the the grassroots effort here in the State of Ohio, we together can propel this bill forward
